I´m really connecting with this song. Transports me right back to when I was a young closeted gay teen in a sexual ”relationship” with my best friend at that time that was straight. For him it was just some sexual experimentation, for me it was much more: he was my first love. It all ended when he started dating and having sex with girls leaving me heartbroken. Even now, in my 30s, I can still look back at that time and somewhat romanticize it when I´m being nostalgic and in a lonely period. So many lines in this song describe exactly what we had perfectly.

@Eric Hartman Listen up mr smoothbrain, the guitar was invented in Spain and came to the US by way of Mexico, cowboy culture is just an Anglo version of vaquero culture, the Mexican cowboys who existed for a couple hundred years before white Americans conquered the Southwest, the dance with all the stomping (not the pirouette) is a Mexican dance, may I recommend actually leaving whatever dank basement you've crawled into and I dunno, maybe speak to a real live human who'd different from you? Lucas Brown the guitar has its origins by the Moors in southern Spain, along with a series of other cousins all across Europe. So now it wasn’t JUST Spanish seeing as it was an instrument found all throughout the old world. Cowboy culture WAS its own culture brought over by the Spanish and other Europeans but vaquero culture was blended eventually. Not everything is stolen by the whites. Considering they developed modern civilization , they had their own thoughts as well ... plus the Spanish are white .. so it’s just whites influencing other whites lol

THE LAYERS ON THIS THING!! He's not just mourning the loss of the relationship but something specific to it -- the lyrics "I had to whisper / Because you liked it that way" + the way the shot at 1:15 makes me think that he was in love with this man and it was reciprocated but the other man was in the closet and not open about the relationship. "Cross my heart and hope to die" is a phrase that kids use when they're promising to keep an especially intimate secret to a friend. I think it's about a man who was in a relationship with a closeted partner who eventually left him because he couldn't handle the stress of it -- "You were crying / They don't cry when we go" -- and now the singer's all alone not just because he's been abandoned but because he's STILL carrying this other man's secrets, a secret that he's promised to keep and he will but at the sake of his own feelings. He wants to be taken back to a time when they were together, even as he confirms through the lyrics that this was not a great time for either of them, because it's still better than what he has now.

I think he should dance more in his videos, I'm fascinated with how he finishes each move, like watching torvil and dean ice skating. Love his dancing in come on baby cry. Obsessed with daytona sand video though, I want that wild if a life 😂🤣

He is very similar to Roy Orbison and Cris Issak, but with way more camp in his image 🖤

I literally have never been a country fan. I never could get into the genre or connect to an artist I genuinely loved or liked. I’m 21 and have been a music lover since as long as I can hear. Turns out I just had to wait a good 16 years to find the country artist I love. And here came in Orville Peck. ❤️

Except it's not really country, but that's okay.

also, check out country from pre-2001. after 2001 it was mildly treasonous to say anything not actively supportive of the system, and you get a lot of "my farm, my USA, and God" style music. Earl is a classic.....

I've only scratched the surface listening to him. He moves me so much with that beautiful deep voice and mesmerizing delivery... It's so hard not to tear up and lose yourself in his music... I can't listen to him in public because I look like an fat middle-aged weirdo staring off into space with tears in my eyes lol ...can't be helped lol Orville, you're hero of my soul!

that was freaking awesome post! the bands/singers that you listed were spot on! i only found out about the magnetic fields through a favorite band of mine, airborne toxic event, performing it live in concert and telling the crowd who had wrote this beautiful song, the book of love. once again, great job on nailing it with your excellent post!!!

the more i learn about him the more i love. he was in a punk band now country. alot like the black lips. and his father did sound for ac/dc. and i performed highway to hell in drag back in the 90s. hilarious. im old enough to be his dad. lol im so glad people like him can be like he is. and do their art. without the hate. makes me feel , all the protesting and acting up for gay rights wasnt in vain.
