A buddy just gave me one of these a week ago, I too wondered about the crankcase breather and what affects this may have on performance. While this engine is in no way as sexy as a Saito (my favorites) I do have to say that it runs well. Thanks for the look see David !

Regarding the weird feel turnin it over 6:47. This is caused by the oil circulation system. It should feel normal if you open the throttle a little bit. I mounted a vent nipple on tha cam-cover. It is easy to remove the bearing before drilling and tapping.I find this Position more practicable for me to add conservation oil. During operation and storage the vent nipple stays closed. I really needed to add oil into the engine because I normally use castor fuel without any synth oil content.The vent system of the Gen.1 Alpha engines shows the approach of OS to continue developing new and better engines. Unfortunately they did a little over-engineering as you said. What I really like on this FS56Alpha is that it is a very powerful engine. I replaced my Laser 70 with the FA56a in my 2nd Magic 3D funflyer and I really loved the Laser in that plane. The FS56a deliveres about the same power but with much less weight. I use a relatively light Graupner Sonic 13x6 prop and the engine runs very well without knocking or any tendency of prop throwing.

Use a OS F glow plug , if you don't want any heartache running your OS 56 fS engine ! Keep up the good work

Mine is upright. I have had no issues at all. I run Morgans Omega 10% fuel 13x6 Xoar prop.

The vent seems similar to the vent on some Magnum 4 stroke engines where there is a niple by the cam that is connected to the intake pipe.

What vent are you referring to? I found that the Magnum engines with the vent arrangement like that useless. The 70 was one of the worst four stroke engines I have ever had the displeasure of running. Not a fan of that oil recirculating thing. Engines operated just fine for may years without that setup.

The vent I'm referring to is the hole drilled in the head by the intake valve. If it goes through to the intake port, then it may be a vent if there is a way for gasses to pass the cam followers and go up the push rod tubes. If this is the case, an additional vent might cause an air leak.

If that was the case why would OS install the vent on the series II engine? besides I have been in contact with another fellow that the addition of the vent cleared up his running issues. Do you have any direct experience with this engine?

No, I do not have direct experience with this engine. I am interested in why a solution works. In this case, why an additional vent would not cause an air leak. I suppose the answer may be that there is much more blow by past the ring than the recirculating vent can remove. Thank you for creating this database.

Funny as if the paint is like the Magnum engines it won't hold up well. If that is the case I was going to paint it black!
