Yes, Ray was "better", if we need to use your qualification. Ray was the root of everyting Nils' talented ass tried to play (but couldn't, if you are a discerning jazz bass listener). Not to say Nils couldn't rock. Listen to him with Sonny Rollins and you will know he can go, but under this contrived competition with Ray, he does not deliver the soul. He shows that he is copying and working on Ray's basis. No pun intended.

NHOP gave his usual best. This is the defining moment of a new generation of bass players coming aboard. Listen to the "snap" that Niels generates. No drummer needed. He played into Oscar's solo with deepening harmonics. What swinging! In later years, he stayed with Oscar even though Mr. Peterson couldn't use his left hand due to his stroke. What class NHOP and Martin Drew showed in continuing to perform and tour with Oscar.

Comparing such artists is in my opinion an exercise in futility. Variety is the spice of life. Can anyone imagine the world with only one bass player? The aggregate contributions of all artists throughout history worldwide is the foundation of any aspiring artist. Also there’s the question of taste. When I was 15 NHOP changed my world, and now that I’m 60 my heart still rejoices whenever I hear his playing. 😊❤️🙏

Very good comparison that I agree with totally. Oscar Peterson said on many occasions that NHOP was the fastest thinking bassplayer he had ever played with. He does have tradition as well (played at Montmatre in Copenhagen since he was 14 or 15 with all the greats) but what makes him special is the way he 'thinks' music. Listen to his 'Samba petit' for example!

Both RB and NHØP were beasts but NHØP seemed to bring out the feel and progression of OP that he was looking for. @KennewickMan..Pedersen is a Very melodic Bass player, when I 1st saw him play (with Oscar peterson in the early 70's), That was what I noticed about his playing - along with his fluidity/speed/invention. As an electric bassist who went on to Upright, I can tell you that his bass sounds Nothing like an electric. As far as the action on his bass - Ray can have his action as low or high as he wants. These guys don't play on old wooden boxes. They use the Best.
