Found in the basement of AVROTROS and digitalized by InnArchive, this recording is the introduction to the Oscar Petersons Trio’s album ‘’We Get Requests’ in the Netherlands in 1965. Oscar Peterson (piano); Ray Brown (bass); Ed Thigpen (drums).
Oscar Peterson (1925 - 2007) is considered to be one of the greatest jazz pianists of all times. He was taught to play the piano and the trumpet by his father at the age of five. At the age of seven, he stopped playing the trumpet due to tuberculosis. He became well-known for his technical skills and musical inventiveness on the piano at an early age. During his career, Peterson accrued multiple Grammy Awards. Since 2010, the city of Ottawa has Honoured Oscar Peterson with a statue.

Very fine choices Bob. 👍 I think I prefer the more flowing style of Art Tatum compared to the more abrupt style of Art Tatum. But that's just me. 😅 But the trio-years with my fellow Danish world class contrabass player Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen ranks very high here in my hometown of Copenhagen.

I seem to remember that Sergei Rachmaninoff considered Oscar Peterson to be better than himself on the piano. I do know that Vladimir Horowitz was full of praise for Oscar Peterson.

I doubt this very much. Peterson was 18 when Rachmaninoff died. I think you're thinking of Art Tatum, who was Peterson's inspiration too. Horowitz, Gershwin , Levant, Rachmaninov, Godowsky all loved Tatum. All of them except Levant were dead by the time Peterson hit his stride. Otherwise, I'm sure they would have loved him too.

@@liamcrangle2401 probably not, but apparently, according to Ahmad Jamal, Rach commented on what a wonderful classical pianist Tatum would have made, which Jamal took as a slight on jazz- fair enough. But Horowitz loved Tatum. This we know according to a televised interview with Andre Previn and Oscar Peterson. In any case, I don’t think Tatum needed any validation from anyone. His monumental talent and abilities should speak for themselves.
