Hi Edwin, thanks for looking in. Great to hear you've been developing a collection of your own over the years, very exciting time to come planning to install a railway in your loft, many hours of fun ahead. I found it very rewarding working/playing with these older model railway items. All the best. Oscar

Love the noise Hornby Dublo motors make. I've got a few West Country Pacifics from Hornby Dublo/ Wrenn and prefer those models to the newer more detailed versions. It's just great to see models older than I working as intended, pulling freight or nice Malachite green coaches.

I've commented before, but I just have to say again how much I enjoy watching your videos, Oscar. Sunday nights (which is when I get to see them) would not be the same for me without one. Everything you share right down to the box detail is so interesting and enjoyable. Love it when you leaf through catalogues too. It's so fascinating and educational to learn what was around before I was even born. No doubt these take a lot of time to make and edit, so I wanted to tell you again how much I love and appreciate your videos!!! :-)

"We'll have to let it go round again, what a shame." I almost choked on my morning coffee when I heard that Oscar. What a wonderful running session featuring your Hornby Dublo "Barnstable." I don't think I have ever seen so much southern rolling stock assembled on a model railway at one time. It really looked great. I imagine that there have been both flat ended and curved ended coaches in real life as well. The suburban coaches certainly were flat ended. It was a long video but it held my attention throughout. Regards, David.

Hi David, glad you enjoyed all those southern style items on the railway. Some interesting variations of the coaches as development went on. I've always liked the coaches at this length, they seem to be the perfect visual size for model/toy railways. All the best. Oscar

Thanks Oscar for showing the difference between the early and later 9" coaches, I was recently given a green 9" composite, that someone had fitted frieght wagon wheels to, so I have replaced them with sleeved wheels, it runs great.

Well you've done it Oscar ! LOL I've been tempted for a long time and after following your channel for a number of years I've made the decision to start my own collection of Hornby Dublo / Triang models. I'm across the pond, but love British Railways from the steam era. Thank you for all the entertaining & educational films. Sundays are always such fun. Cheers from Oregon, Felix

Hi Felix, thanks for looking in. Nice to hear you have been enjoying seeing these Hornby Dublo and Tri-ang items from my collection on the railway and that you're beginning to add them to your own collection. Its would interesting to hear how many of these items show up in the United States and where, from general reading over the years, quite a lot of the British Tri-ang range found its way to Canada with the U.K.'s obviously links and quit a few items were specifically produced for the Canadian market, but not so much to the US, I believe there was a very short period in the late 60s, were a small number of items from the range were marketed in the US, but under different brand names along with limited number models with some of the road names found in the US on them and fitted with a knuckle type coupling. I think a fair bit of Hornby also found its way to Canada, but I'm quite about it place in the US market, I've not read quite as much as I should on the subject, there's always more to find out. Take care. Oscar

Another excellent running session and a very busy one too. Wonderful Southern atmosphere. I love the Tri-ang three-car EMU, which is quite correct for early southern electrics. Ideally the excellent Hornby Dublo units should be in two- or four-car sets, but it's your railway so you are in charge. Thank you for a very entertaining video.

Hi, thanks for watching. Glad you enjoyed seeing these items running, I wasn't expecting to crashes either.. When you look back at the footage, they both look very visible/ predictable, especially the second one, but it's always that thing of keeping with items in motion along with a camera, as well as just plain old forgetfulness. As someone who (in my youth) used to spend time in the town in which this loco was named after, I really hate to sit in Pedantry Corner today but it's Barnstaple with a P - you'd be suprised by even the number of people locally (and in local publication) who still get it wrong though. From wikipedia, it explains the reason why: "The name is first recorded in the 10th century and is thought to derive from the Early English bearde, meaning "battle-axe", and stapol, meaning "pillar", i.e. a post or pillar to mark a religious or administrative meeting place. The derivation from staple meaning "market", indicating a market from its foundation, is likely to be incorrect, as the use of staple in that sense first appears in 1423." Not as clear cut as the "there was a barn and a stable" as most people seem to think . . . Interesting video nonetheless :)

Great running session.. It's very interesting to see the different roof on almost identical coaches. An almost unnoticed change done over the years? The "Barnstaple" loco runs very well, and thanks also for showing us the "original instruction booklet" that accompanied it.. The series 3 Uncoupler ramps, (being able to be lowered) were a great (and necessary) piece of track, for layouts that run a mixture of couplings? It is really handy, especially when running trains made up of Mk. 2 (or even Hornby) couplings on mixed collections? Better design than both, the Standard track 'manual' type, or the permanently 'up' Super 4 versions? The Triang 'Hand Decoupler' was, and still is, a really 'handy' tool to have for a layout? A real 'Southern green' session again today. Really interesting to look at... Thank you..
@oscarpaisley

Good morning Robin, glad you enjoyed the southern theme again in the video. I'm with you on this, the series 3 Uncoupler ramps are terrific items. I've always thought it odd that Tri-ang did not go down the route of offering an electrically operated variation. I did have a fiddle around with reasonable success at making an electrically operated uncoupling rail for the Super 4 by incorporating one of Hornbys current electrically operated Uncouplers. It works to a point, but the main issue is the bit that goes up and down is not as broad as it needs to be for the older coupling types. Take care. Oscar

The dublo Barnstaple is definitely one of my favourite hornby dublo models, it’s definitely one I would like to get and actually recently had a good opportunity but couldn’t take it, recently a load of them appeared on that well known auction site as you call it for prices ranging from £50 to £80 but I couldn’t take the opportunity to get one as I was paying for something else at the time, will keep a look out though as it does seem to be an easy model to get hold of, great video this morning Oscar, excellent running session with both the spam can and the dublo EMU running. Great idea with the southern coach as a converter for the couplings, one I made when I got a dublo standard class 4 was using a jouef flatbed wagon.

Good morning David, thank you again for taking the time to watch. Sorry to hear you missed your opportunity getting one of these models locos. It's annoying when good opportunities come along but the timings wrong, but more often than not a similar or better of opportunity will present itself overtime. The converter with Joueff flatbed sounds like a good workaround. Since making this video, I've made a number of converters oddments lying around and have turned out to be very useful. All the best. Morning Roy, glad you enjoyed that. Hope you had a good time running your version of the Winston Churchill. Sounds like it's a beautifully detailed item, I had time to kill the other day in Newcastle and went to the department store Fenwick, they stock quite a bit of Hornby, they didn't have a Battle of Britain class on display, but a number of amazing, looking A4s plus quite a bit of TT, 120 beautifully detailed items, but the prices! And this is in the toy department. All the best. Oscar

Tri-Ang M7? I know you've got one Oscar. Can't hide it. I remember seeing it for the first time in would've been early seventies with its opening smokebox door and firebox glow. Had the family 3 rail dublo at the time so the M7 was a foreigner. Still a great thing though :) tbh not a fan of dublo tinplate or super detail in BR southern green. Best coaches were the D blood 'n custards, seconded by those same in all maroon.

Morning Oscar Another great ‘Southern Region’ themed video. It reminds me of my time as a boy living in London and travelling from Waterloo to Ilfracombe on the’Atlantic Coast Express’, hauled by a combination of Merchant Navies, Battle of Britain and West Country class Bulleid Pacifics. I well remember the Merchant Navies trying to get started at Waterloo with a full compliment of twelve coaches on a Saturdays holiday train, safety valves lifting and screaming as the locomotive slipped on grease rails, now that was noisy!! The Dublo ‘Barnstaple’ (not ’ Barnstable’ ) locomotive was one of Hornby Dublo’s finest products. I have the 3 rail version and it looks great with a rake of Dublo Pullman coaches. It was strange that Dublo never produced a streamline ‘Spam Can’ version of the Bulleid Pacific, they already had the chassis, wheels and tender?? It’s ironic that after sixty years since the demise of Hornby Dublo, that the modern day Hornby Hobbies Ltd has reintroduced the Dublo branding with diecast locomotives and candy striped boxes!

No Magnadhesion possible these days, on Nickle Silver rail.. So extra weight with diecast bodies will aid in traction, (and may also give us detail that is less likely to break off), I am guessing?

Love these Southern Region vibes. Everything looking highly realistic for products made in the mid to late 60s under normal DC operation. Great to see these two Bullied Pacifics lined up. Some viewers might not know that that the real Barnstable once looked like Winston Churchill, before its air-smoothed casing was removed and the valve gear switched out. Very smart use of Synchrosmoke, taking advantage of modern chemical knowledge for a product that won't also mess up the mechanism. Looking particularly prototypical when the locomotive comes to a halt and the column of smoke goes straight up. The shiny tyres, plus build and solidity of the Dublo model just has Triang beat though. Triang and Dublo EMUs squaring off is also awesome. Once again, I think Dublo has the superior product.
@oscarpaisley
@oscarpaisley 3 ай бұрын
Hi Marrtin, thanks for looking in, glad you enjoyed seeing these terrific items underway on the railway from two very different sorts of manufacturers. I think products from both have many endearing qualities, but as you say, the Dublo product could easily be considered a superior with its build quality and choice of materials, as a consequence out of the reach of many who would've liked to have played them. Tri-ang/Rovex seemed to have spotted a gap in the market, whilst exploiting newer materials and advances in production techniques managing to bring Toy/model trains in at slightly lower price point for many more to enjoy, but with some fairly interesting built quality issues along the way. All makes for very interesting collecting and operation many years beyond the service life, that either of these manufacturers would have imagined. It's all good fun, take care. Oscar

@@oscarpaisley It struck me that the old Hornby was misled perhaps by what was happening in other countries. In Germany Marklin still makes three rail HO on a tin roadbed, while in America, Lionel was making tinplate O gauge years after Hornby stopped, and even today three rail O gauge is still their main track. Only in the UK Triang came out of nowhere to eat Hornby's lunch with cheap plastic models.
@muir8009
@muir8009 3 ай бұрын
@marrrtin the shiny tyres were a bit of an unforeseen necessity: when dublo ventured into two rail the conductivity was rather compromised, hence the nickel tyres added being better conductors than the plain cast. Not as good I reckon: the cast have considerably more grip than the shiny nickel: for all its much vaunting, I found my 3 rail ring field 8f spent most of its considerable power spinning wheels, where the somewhat underpowered half inch would slow down, but wouldn't spin. Also I'm in complete agreement with your observation of the track system. I think it rather disappointing that from the '39 addition of large radius curves the system was unchanged until the end. And even those large radius curves only came in the full 45° curve. Again, 45° curves, where, for instance of course märklin used the mathematically advantageous 30° curves. Even good old trix went from Bakelite to wafer sleeper to plastic sleeper with chemically blackened third, and a good looking track it was. I just think that hornby should've rethought their overall aim. The enormous simultaneous introduction of 2 rail and the super detailed wagons and coaches put an enormous strain on a company that couldn't even comprehend scalextric, Dr Who and Thunderbirds.

Hi Oscar, Lovely Barnstaple and a lot of the enjoyment from these models comes from the weight, maybe sounds a bit daft but it works for me. Nice bit of smoke. I’m sticking with my rhubarb and custard flavoured vaping liquid, it’s only a pound in the pound shop, would you believe 🤔 A couple of derailments etc. today but it wouldn’t be model railways otherwise 👏👍

@oscarpaisley 3 ай бұрын
Hi Gordon, I think you're right it adds a lovely feel to the way the model runs with all that weight and the lovely sound at me as it runs across the railheads. Completely different to the much lighter weight Tri-ang models. The weight of the model was a bit of an issue on the Super 4 layout I was never very convinced of the ability of the suspension bridge to deal with its weight. Too much movement for comfort. All the best. Oscar

I take a wheel to the model shop and try from a selection of brass tube, for the best fit, or slightly under, which then needs a slit in it, "C" clip style, 1/4" to 1/2" (6 to 12mm) lengths. 5/32, 11/64 (4mm) bore. Sometimes the tube needs a slit and careful " nipping" to reduce the diameter.

Under your influence I have started collecting some of the items I had or always wanted as a child of the 70s/80s, I just wish I had more space to actually build a circular OO railway, end-to-end ones may be more proto-typical but the appeal isn’t the same.
