I have this model. Always thought it was well ahead of its time and marks a real shift in direction for Hornby. Incredibly well detailed and smooth running for its time. I can confirm that this model came with metal buffers by the way.

Lovely loco. A real change for Triang Hornby . Allegedly the tender unit was based on a Fleischmann unit. I had the R550 Black version in a Hornby Railways box with polystyrene inserts . She was a revelation running, lovely and smooth compared to my other locos at that time and to be honest restored a bit of confidence after years of frustration trying to get models to run properly. Constant cleaning of rails . This loco seemed to be much more resilient running , probably because of the pick ups over the full length of chassis . I still have her . Even though I’ve got the later Bachmann one and I recently bought a second hand Evening Star from the early Hornby period , R550 is still my favourite . 44 years of running!

Another very nice well put together video Oscar, much prefer the ones where you give a commentary. Back in ’71 I was completely blown away by this model, pored over the Triang-Hornby catalogue for hours and dreamed. This was the Jaguar E-type, the Nikon F2, the Nakamichi cassette deck of its day. Tender drive! Ringfield motor! Chrome wheels! Traction tyres! High Gloss! (ok even I thought that was a bit over the top) The bloke down at Passmore Models in Coulsdon regaled me with tales of one pulling 12 coaches and a dead locomotive. Only at nearly £10 it was just too much, apparently £130 in today’s money, never got one until last year.. How things go in circles - the motor’s gone back in the engine, traction tyres are out, so too are chrome wheels and gloss bodywork!

Hi Oscar, just as a general observation and comment regarding all of your wonderful videos. Perhaps its already been said but it occurs to me that watching your video's is a bit like dipping in and out of one of Pat Hammonds books on Triang but with the added benefit of moving pictures and commentary ... How brilliant is that!

Those Mk1 coaches soldiered on until the early 2000's by which time they gained flush glazing and improved wheelsets, but still the same basic body moulds as you see here. The evening star body moulding is now the loco driven 9f in the current railroad range.

I've seen two of these in person and they are very impressive models for their time. I have yet to see a BR Black one, are they more rare?
@oscarpaisley
@oscarpaisley 5 жыл бұрын
The BR Black version was R264 in 1972. And in 1973 it became R550 and seems to not of shown up in the catalogue after that. So yes they are probably rarer than the gloss green ones. Oscar

Chilshood memory of the catalogue mentioning the "authentic gloss finish" which even as a ten year old I thought a bit unlikely. Guess that was marketing men at a museum! The ladder can be cleaned up with some brown sauce or Coke to get the rust off, then some Carrs metal black or similar, or paint of course. Lovely locomotive but the development costs were enormous comapred ot the usual output. Worth it though.

Oscar, how did you go about changing the traction tyres? I have just purchased a 9F triang hornby and it only has tyres on 1 side. I have a new set on order but no idea of how to do it. Many thanks
@oscarpaisley
@oscarpaisley Жыл бұрын
Good morning Colin the first Tri-ang Hornby version of the 9F had traction Tyers both sides, but later variation just had Tyers on the one side. In both cases I think the best way to refit Tyers is to remove the motor block from the chassis frame by removing the two screws which hold the weight, chassis frame, and motor block together this will allow free access to the wheels. I've included links to 2 service sheets covering slightly different variations of the tender. Thanks for watching hope this is of some help. At least these older 9Fs has all wheel (tender-)drive, and a decent weight at the tender (i have one of the last of the tender-driven ones, and a Bachmann). This was the period when most european manufactures started to put the motor, and the drive to the tender, and tender-drive still rules most of the EU tender loco market. Some are very good dough, like the Fleischmann's. And Roco uses a drive-shaft to drive both the loco's and the tender's wheels, but a tender-drive still ruins the "illusion".
@oscarpaisley
@oscarpaisley 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Tom, yes, the tender drive spoils the overall effect. I think Hornby have gone back to locomotive drive for there current models of the 9F. The Roco models with the drive shaft sounds like a great piece of engineering. Oscar
@TomPrickVixen
@TomPrickVixen 5 жыл бұрын
Yes the recent Hornby 9Fs are loco driven, but they still have the old tooling, and ever since it was moved to the "Railroad" range it even has a little less detail than the tender driven ones had.

I tried to find a video of the mid 1970's Hornby Black 5 done by yourself but you've yet to revue this locomotive. I have one of these. They have an interesting feature in that they were intended to originally to be conventional loco drive and not tender drive so the chassis carries a slot for the drive axle cog and a dummy ballast weight where the X04 motor would have sat. On mine I installed an Airfix 5 pole motor, installed the missing drive axle cog, and converted it to loco AND tender drive, which improved it's hauling power quite a bit. This was way back in 1979. The ring field motor and tender drive was disabled in the early 1980's, leaving only the ballast weights and that's how it currently runs on my layout today as a loco drive only Hornby Black 5. I look forward to seeing it in a future video some day.

I have only recently acquired a Black 5 R.859 it's in one of those great silver seal boxes with the four tender drive steam locomotives pictured on it. I wasn't aware of the chassis design I will have to have a closer look at it. The centre drive wheel whilst being a step forward modelling dose course a few issues in the toy train environment I play in. It will find its way into a video soon or later. Oscar

No doubt this Evening Star was a massive undertaking for Triang Hornby at the time, tender drive plus all the additional trimmings and detail on the loco. I don’t know about others with this loco, But I cannot remember how many times that tiny spring on the front pony truck made an escape on the floor! And as an aside, the Insulfish van certainly had a long life in the catalogue too!!

Hi Oscar, You mention that the middle wheel of the engine is unflanged. The real engine's middle wheel was actually unflanged so that is prototypical. here is a good picture here to illustrate it. www.masterpiecemodels.co.uk/index.php/coming-soon2/br-9f-2-10-0
