Mind you that both Quest and Will are black men from Philadelphia, around the same age, and started their careers in music then branched off. Questlove directing a documentary and winning an Oscar should have been a high point, especially considering the film's focus on family, culture, and community. Will's unhinged actions shitted on a lot hard working people, not just Chris Rock.

I think the Academy purposely ignored it because they know how precarious their show already is. The backlash to that is, this also ruins a lot of good will comedians will have to present/host. I think this concern is overstated. There is a certain type of roast comedy employed by a certain subset of comedians. Kathy Griffin comes to mind, as she tweeted out something very similar to this comment (that every comedian now had to be worried about people walking onstage). Ricky Gervais is another. Do they have to worry that somebody is going to walk onstage and punch them? Yes. But that was true before last night. It is a danger that comes with the territory of telling mean-spirited jokes directly to the faces of people who you know are not going to take it well. But that's not every comedian, by any stretch of the imagination, and it's not even supposed to be every award show. That kind of comedy is only ever okay at The Golden Globes, where the stakes aren't high and everybody is there drinking and partying. The Oscars are the actual prestigious award show, and jokes there aren't supposed to tear people down. So if, for example, Tina Fey and Amy Poehler (who should host every award show ever) were approached to host the Academy Awards, do we really think that they're going to be worried about being assaulted on stage? Probably not. They don't tell jokes that could ever provoke this sort of reaction. The vast majority of comedians don't. Hell, most comedians stick to the safest territory of all, self-effacing humor, and present the show as if it's a show full of beautiful, glamourous, wonderful people, being hosted by a peasant, unworthy to be in their presence. None of these comedians ever need to worry about getting punched, and aren't going to be irrationally worried about being the next assault victim.

Imagine a woman who carries the Cancer gene & elects to remove her breasts ... would a joke be appropriate then? No! Is violence the answer no, but also back in the day of a man owned another's wife he'd slap the man across the face which could end the situation or a duel would ensue.

I've only seen the clips so I may be missing context, but it seems to me that Will Smith felt embarrassed in front of Jada after laughing at the joke and panicked as he realised he hadn't immediately supported her publicly. I imagine he felt he had to do something quickly and hugely overreacted, maybe even wondering what he was doing as we was doing it. But he made a decision and kept doubling down. I've seen this kind of thing outside nightclubs dozens of times! Just weird to see it on such a stage.

What I find most disturbing, is that the Oscars pressured Kevin Hart, on not hosting the Oscars because of old tweets. Over text for Pete's sake. But, here comes Will Smith who smacks another man, in his face. On stage. On live tv. And, there is no repercussions from the Oscars? If nothing is going to happen to Will Smith, then the Oscars should make an open apology to Kevin Hart. And, ask him to host next year's oscars.

For the Oscars to be, relatively, successful, what they need to do is pretty simple, obvious stuff: Have 1 host, cut the unnecessary "comedy" bits, present every award live, allow winners to finish their speeches (especially the awards with multiple winners), & modernize the award categories (add stunt coordination, casting director, and voice performance). Keep the reunions and only have performances of nominated songs. The Oscars don't need frills. The Oscars are great because it's the OSCARS. It's the pinnacle. The rest will take care of itself.

My two cents on the Smith Vs. Rock saga: 1. Will Smith knew he was going to win the Best Actor category yet still allowed his emotions and ego to crap the bed he has spent decades making, and 2. Chris Rock declined to lay charges against Mr Smith. Perhaps it was because he felt partly guilty to the events, perhaps he had his arm twisted by the Academy not to do so, perhaps he thought it would send a wrong message to his African American audience in the wake of BLM... I honestly don't know. What I do know is that a criminal investigation of the matter would mean that Chris Rock wouldn't be able to comment on the incident on his current worldwide stand up tour. Regardless of who got the gold and pathetic standing ovation, Chris Rock is going to have the last laugh.

I am certain that Rock has been praying that Jada Pinkett Smith does not have a more serious condition that had yet to become public. For one night Dan has felt what it's like to be a wrestling news KZbinr, not just the physicality, but all the mind-boggling decisions and disappointment.

Thank you! When i saw this, i was shocked and my first inner response was... you do you think you are, Will Smith. What a message, sent to his fans... it's okay to use physical violence if you feel offended?!
