How did a remarkable film such as Brokeback Mountain lose the Best Picture to the hypocritical and pretentious Crash?
@independentfilmchannel14768 жыл бұрын
I loved Crash despite its stupid title. It was an audacious and surprising expose of social prejudices we are all supposed to be over, convincingly presented. But everything pointed to Brokeback Mountain winning, having been honored by virtually every other single award-giving body. It was rather gutless of the academy, for whatever reason, to reward its screenplay and direction but not going the extra mile to best picture (though it's happened before with The Informer, the Treasure of the Sierra Madre, probably others). Perhaps it was just too scary a prospect for individual voters to give a gay love story their ultimate stamp of approval--a very odd but telling complication from a community as enlightened as Hollywood supposedly is.

The public actually took it seriously. The movie was critically aclaimed and it was a box office success.
@albertstock852 жыл бұрын
The public did take it seriously! As recent Oscar movies go, it was a very solid box office performer, critics deservedly praised it non stop, and it was the recipient of numerous awards and nominations. Alongside Munich, it was my favorite film of the year, and I watched it multiple times in the theater. It is still considered the rightful winner of Best Picture. I have long contested that Crash is not a horrible film, it has a lot of merit. But it’s abundantly clear that Brokeback Mountain should have won Best Picture that year. It is a timeless and eternal classic that seized upon the zeitgeist of those early 2000s. I was in my 4th semester of film school at the time and it was a extremely influential film upon that generation of film students.

Sense and sensibility. Sure For the Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon - no. Peter Jackson displayed better directing for all 3 Lord of the Ring's movies but you know I guess they just decided to ram every oscar for the Return of the King. It's just that bad. Most people still enjoy Brokeback Mountain though.

Tom Hanks looks MAD AS HELL at 0:12. I wonder why? Roger Ebert wrote: "Many Oscarcast viewers thought they saw Hanks saying something angry to host Jon Stewart. Lip-readers who recorded it came up with highly colorful possibilities. But was he talking to Stewart? From the TV viewer's POV, Hanks seemed to be looking at Stewart. But he could also, in the same line of sight, have been looking at Bill Conti, the musical director, who was not visible in the TV shot. Defamer.com has produced a plausible theory. The site says Hanks thought he had a deal with Conti and the Academy that they would not play the theme from 'Forrest Gump' when he came onstage; he is tired of always being identified with it. But that was the music played, and that's why he was unhappy."
