The speech hits harder now because of the recent conversation around the pay disparity and lack of opportunities between Black actresses and their white female and male counterparts. Hopefully, the entertainment industry will use this moment to meaningfully and significantly progress in its practices. There are many, many roles she could have played to perfection that she turned down because she is a lady and a thespian first; she refuses to do anything easy or to be a blemish in her industry because she knows what it means to be the only, to be the first, to be the barrier-breaker and knows that she would be looked differently as a black woman because of her choices.
