@tiearts8 жыл бұрын
If they were based on merit,things would be a lot different: Denzel would have won for Malcolm X, Downey Jr should've won for Chaplin, Norton should've won for Primal Fear & American History X

I'm not saying those performances were better, it's just the Oscars are obviously political, but those performances clearly are Oscar worthy
@bryanismyname75838 жыл бұрын
They are partly based on merit, but of course favoritism does come into play. Downey and Washington were nominated for those movies in the same year, so it's doubtful they could've both won over Al pacino that year. My pick would have been Downey. :)
@tiearts8 жыл бұрын
They were both Oscar worthy. All the performances I mentioned were, when you start to look at who they'd have been nominated with it becomes a different thing. Leo was Oscar worthy in WOWS, yet McConaughey deserved to win for Dallas Buyers that year

And for those who don't know, Carrey's remark "How was YOUR weekend?" referred to the fact that his movie Liar, Liar had just opened to big box office, which was seen as a career redemption for him after his prior film The Cable Guy flopped.
@Sean-mc4iq8 жыл бұрын
+773SleepyHollow cable guy did not flop LOLLLLLLL
@bryanismyname75838 жыл бұрын
While it technically grossed more than its budget domestically, they did a lot of advertising for the film, which got mixed-at-best reviews. "Liar, Liar" was a much more popular film that also garnered better reviews.
@773SleepyHollow8 жыл бұрын
It grossed more than its budget domestically, but the studios only get roughly half of a film's box-office gross. Worldwide The Cable Guy made 102 million... if we assume that the studio got roughly $51 million (which might be off in either direction by a few million dollars), and factor in the marketing budget (as you mentioned) on top of the movie's $47 million production budget, the film likely lost at least a few million for the studio. Everything is relative in the movie business, and perception factors into things perhaps more than it should, so while The Cable Guy was not a huge flop like say Ishtar or Heaven's Gate, it radically underperformed compared to Carrey's prior lead roles (starting with Ace Ventura: Pet Detective), all of which turned healthy profits relative to their budgets. I suspect that part of the over-reaction at the time to The Cable Guy's relative failure was because some people in the industry (and I'm including the media as part of the industry) weren't really sold on Carrey as a performer who would last as a box-office force, so when TCG didn't make money, it was easy for them to decide, "Ha, I KNEW he was a flash in the pan!" Also, The Cable Guy had a different tone than Carrey's previous work - it was a little darker and more unconventional - and the industry sometimes reacts with resentment when a movie star goes in a different direction. (And as I recall, the movie was advertised in a misleading way, as if the studio thought that it should give the film's potential audience the impression that it was going to see a standard Jim Carrey movie in order to get folks to the theaters.)

yes. a groundbreaking year. Just think about it, Abyss 1989, Back to The Future 2 1989, Total Recall 1990, Terminator 2 1991 (way ahead of its time), Jurassic Park 1993, toy story 1995, The Mask 1994. which were interesting and good. Then suddenly things like Twister and Independence Day. in 1997 (1996?). Few years later amazing works like Titanic, Armageddon, Matrix, Star Wars 1, Gladiator, Lord of The Rings. We see their effects to this day in mega productions, Transformers, 2012, etc. PS. I hope also you see a pattern with James Cameron movies. And what an amazing decade it was. Like no other.

In general, we see movies ten or fifteen years later and we realise: "Nowadays the visual effects in this movie are not so good as at that time" (with the exception of 2001 A Space Odyssey, which will never get age). But in general we see some movies years later and we have the sensation of age. About the Independence Day movie, there are about two or three scenes which were already like it at that time.
@bryanismyname75835 жыл бұрын
ID4 was meant as a throwback, so some of the effects were made to look an old fifties movie but with a modern sensibility. Also, the opening shot of the spaceships hovering was reminiscent of "V" the miniseries from 1983.
