What a great actress and there are so many things right with this performance and this pick. First of all, Ms Spacek was perfectly cast. That natural twang in her voice and her feistiness belonged to Loretta Lynn as well. Who else could have convincingly aged from thirteen to middle age? Who could have brought the depth of emotion and the changes to this character from naive mountain girl to overwhelmed music legend? And who else could have done her own singing well enough to do honor to the real life woman? Nobody else. A virtually unparalleled triumph.

Sissy Spacek had great acting on Coal Miner's Daughter.

A tie would have been nice: Mary Tyler Moore in "Ordinary People" and Sissy Spacek in "Coal Miner's Daughter" ... Personally, for me, Mary Tyler Moore's performance was spot on and has stood the test of time.

I wasn't alive yet...and so I'm not sure who was the favorite between Spacek and Moore.

One of my favourite Actress's, truly gifted, so well deserved, I also believe she should have won it for 'Carrie' too, lovely Lady.

I keep thinking how she should've won for Carrie, but I'm glad to see her finally win for Coal Miner's Daughter.

Sissy should've used so of her telekinetic powers on Hoffman's speech.

Mary was Great in Ordinary People! Who knew she could play such a Cold Hearted Mother! But Sissy Literally became Loretta Lynn!

I wonder if those actresses had seen coal miners daughter prior to this because if they did, they must have known as soon as the film ended that they'd lost.

Mary Tyler Moore's performance in "Ordinary People" was extraordinary, and really, I would have given a tie that year between her and Miss Spacek who was also phenomenal. Personally, I feel Miss Moore's performance holds up better today than the bio of Loretta Lynn. I would have given Miss Spacek Oscar nominations for MARIE (1984) and for BADLANDS (1973), she is a great actress worthy of more than 6 Oscar nods.
