It was a Novel before it was a Movie. With Ken Kesey and the novel he wrote, there would have been no Movie with Jack Nicolson. I do find it funny and sad that heither Jack nor Louise Lasser when she won Best Actress for playing Nurse Ratched ever Thanked Ken Kesey for writing the book.

That's definitely true. Though I would argue that he was very good looking (perhaps not as much so as someone like Cary Grant but still good looking) in his thirties and forties, he just didn't age particularly well after that.

THIS FILM IS AWESOME, I TRULY ENJOYED IT AND KEPT TALKING ABOUT IT FOR WEEKS. I used to work at a psychiatric hospital at that time and was allowed to show this to the patients and crew: we had a blast of a night, it was really great !!

For The Shining NO WAY. De Niro won that year for Raging Bull and I think that's the greatest performence by an actor in a leading role. But I agree for Chinatown, even tho Pacino was amazing in Godfather 2 and I do think Nicholson deserved to win an Oscar for this more than Pacino, but it's really close.

I was an usher at the 1984 Academy Awards at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion the year he was nominated and won Best Supporting Actor for "Terms of Endearment." I showed Jack to his seat, wished him "Good Luck" and offered him a handshake - which he was happy to shake, telling me "Thank You." A class act and as cool as never before. It was a moment I'll never forget.

Hear the cheer when it was announced? Everyone in that room knew he deserved to win for one of the greatest English-speaking performances in movie history. Louise Fletcher deservedly won Best Actress as well for playing a character who is utterly evil but is even more terrifying because she genuinely believes she is doing good. A great picture that will stand the test for all time.

Pacino's performance was more daring and is the best of his career. It was already his 4th nomination. But it was Jack's 5th. It was his time and Cukoos Nests' year. They both were great. Interesting note: my father swears that as great as Jack was in the movie, the best McMurphy he saw was William Devane's performance off-Broadway. Wish I could've witnessed that.

Pachino in Dog Day Afternoon & Matthau in Sunshine Boys are 2 of the greatest performances EVER captured on film. Yet Jack in Cuckoo's Nest was ALSO one of the greatest performances ever captured on film. Wow, what a lineup!

Jack sure did deserve a percentage of the pictures he was in. I watch films because Jack’s in them. Whatever deal he struck for Batman was clever and he knew that people were going to see HIM. Thank you Jack,

Never was there a greater delimma of choice between Nicholson and Pacino, both perfect roles. I don't know how they chose the winner it should have been a tie. Striesand and Hepburn in the 60's.

I love when he breaks out that smile as he walks to the podium. I notice that smile on other Oscar winners, who waited through a a few nominations. That wonderful feeling of achievement and recognition hits them.. Check out, Gregory Peck and Bert Lancaster, you see it there too. Still love the movie and the performance was great, but i think he is even better in The Last Detail.
