In 2002 Halle Berry became the first and so far only woman of color to win the Best Actress Oscar. This video examines why it took so long and the legacy of Halle’s win as it relates to actresses today.
For more on this topic, I recommend reading Kelli Carter Jackson, Crystal Keels, Edward Mapp, Audrey McClusky, and Thomas Doherty - all of whom have work that was instrumental to this video.

@John Edwards Her Oscar should have been for Best Actress, not Best Supporting.
@outinsider

@John Edwards not to mention, Meryl is white and white actresses get leads even if they are supporting versus the expectation that actresses of color are expected to be supporting because of industry and social standards, even if they lead. Emma Stone didn't deserve her Oscar.

@John Edwards Also, Kate Winslet was only in scenes involving the actor who played Michael, and was originally considered supporting early in Oscar season 2009. So, if you are white, you are a shoo-in for lead even if you give a supporting performance. If you are not, then supporting you go, even if you lead.
@outinsider

@John Edwards all I am getting from this response is that white actors are allowed to be fully dimensional but black and brown actors get little to anything and have to work it regardless because according to you, they are taking up space and "crowding" opportunities for default white actors. Viola Davis should have gotten a Best Actress Oscar by now. Halle Berry should have been nominated again. Gabrielle Union should have been nominated by now. But Hollywood maintains and rewards white actors. There is work to be done, and the white gaze needs to be held accountable.
@outinsider
@outinsider 5 жыл бұрын
@John Edwards you work in Hollywood, yet you put it on those marginalized by the system that supports you yet not 100% them on account of their skin color on them to solve for you when you can use your privilege to take a supporting role and let them lead. You can produce and put up the money for their efforts. Something has to change because I don't go to movies where I am reflected on purpose because I support artists of color and support their voices on screen like I do in my life. It is rare that I see a movie about, starring, written, directed, and produced by white men. I have 110 plus years of the white experience on film. I am demanding marginalized voices, perspectives, and talents be supported by Hollywood. You say how hard it is for films featuring black talent to be made, picture how much harder it is to find work. Kate and Meryl don't have to worry since Hollywood rewards whiteness and they are both white. They are both women and women do need support too, and need men to support their voices and perspectives on screen as well. The issue of race and gender intersect here. Read over your responses to my comments. If you support the talent you have named, put money down and stop blaming the marginalized for the marginalization you support systemically.

Didn't really think so. It leaves all the responsobility on the black women of color to do something about not winning an oscar, which I know wasn't the intent of the person saying this, as shown throughout the video. There are other cause-effect relations that were brought up here, but then thrown out the window with this one last line for dramatic effect at the end.

Halle Berry is not a good representation of the every black woman and it's harmful to the 95% of black women who don't look like Halle Berry, it'd be like if Patrick Tully from The Sopranos stole all the good black leading roles from Mashallah Ali and Idris Elba.

Honestly for as “overrated” as black panther is, the fact that it’s a film about black people not presented as stereotypes but as powerful royals is really impressive, you could change the race and setting of black panther and the story would still be fine but it would be way more boring, the fact that they are all African really enhances the film, and to me that’s the best kind of representation, when a characters race doesn’t really define the character, but it enhances the character/setting/themes so much that it becomes an integral part of the story, that’s also why I as a Mexican love coco so much, you could put it in a different setting and turn it into more of a generic afterlife story and it would be fine, but the fact that it is set in Mexico elevates the movie so much

And why a middle-class couple could afford TWO Native live-in maids, plus a chauffeur when they didn't feel like driving. Cleo's mother was being kicked off her land, so she couldn't go home -- remember? Now, I can understand your not agreeing with the ideology of the film, but do you really mean you haven't heard of it? It’s quite embarrassing and weird that Hollywood and white people believe everyone else should be able to project themselves through whiteness but they themselves are unable or unwillingness to do the reverse.

@Eddie at The LMV Yes that's true, yet it still did well at the box office and won Oscars. More recently people complained about The Hunger Games having black people in it period yet it still was a box office success. My point is that studios act like any kind of diversity will kill the industry when often it ultimately does the opposite. People might complain but complaints aren't the same as demanding money back or no one going to see the movie. Studios back off too soon and no one has a chance to get used to anything. If people who live in a bubble keep seeing black lawyers or Asian park rangers or gay dystopian characters, you get used to it and it's not so strange anymore. Studios just don't have the spine to pop the bubble vision of the world despite monetary benefits that can be gained.

Another problem is that Monster's Ball has long since been eclipsed by Halle's immediate post-Oscar slump. She received a lot of coverage as the first black main Bond girl (I think there are maybe 2 in the past), but it was in Die Another Day. She gets criticized for that performance, but honestly it's not even in the top 10 problems with that movie. And then of course, Catwoman, which is a one-word punchline for movie fans.

I think Americans, in general, tend to "other" Asian cultures to an extreme and hold deeply ingrained stereotypes about them and only like to see those beliefs reinforced on screen. If they weren't fighting, being ice-cold "dragon ladies", doing sex work or being wise and mystical... Hollywood had no place for Asians. When it comes to representation, I think we've maybe done ourselves a disservice perpetuating the idea that we are "close to white" and content with being "the acceptable minority" to white Americans. It's complicated...and would make an excellent video.

Hattie McDaniel winning for Gone With The Wind is still something to not ignore even though we know the history of stereotyping for black actors. In looking in to her performance she was the strongest character in the whole film. If anything I think there was more criticism of Prissy and not to say there was criticism of Mammy but I understand why the criticism are founded. I so wanted Viola Davis to win for THE HELP but Meryl had to be Meryl and give a phenomenal performance in THE IRON LADY and I also notice something with Davis’ Oscar nominations. Her nominations were with characters that took place in the 60s. It’s interesting that black men have more chances in the leading categories then supporting. I hope that new structure of AMPAS leads to more people of color to have more a presence in the years ahead.

You're basically saying that all that matters is color. White can only relate to whites, black can only relate to blacks, asians to asians etc. It's ridiculous and now we're doing the same with Captain Marvel pretending girls can't relate to male heroes or that there hasn't been women they could relate to before or in Black Panderings case black heroes. This whole SJW day and age needs to stop. You're not fighting racism by pointing out colors and races, you're doing the opposite. And here's a fun fact for you, Black Pandering stereotyped every single white character making them dumb clowns that had to be rescued by the Wakandans (just like Ghostbusters 2016 made every male character a dumb clown that had to be rescued by the female characters), so in actuality the people behind Black Pandering didn't use their opportunity to make a movie that spoke about equality at all. There's been made plenty of far better movies that deals much more subtle and clever with a very important subject such as racism. Nominating Black Pandering was a ploy to get more views considering the Academy Awards the year before was at an all time low in terms on viewers and furthermore was in shambles with not having a host etc. Black Pandering is a mediocre mess. @@bluedasher74 disagree there. Boys Don't Cry YES 100% deserved but Million Dollar Baby was Swank playing herself but instead of a scrappy Actress she boxes. It covers the repeated young upstart vs the seasoned vet and also the long suffering vet ala Glen Close or Geraldine Page or Miss Amy Adams.

They will never let Viola Davis win over Meryl Streep. Meryl is their golden girl. They are just as good as each other but Viola talks to much. I realize it's not entirely within your scope as a channel, but I'm a little surprised you didn't cover her post-Oscar win work the same way you touched upon that of Dandridge, Bassett, etc. It's true that Berry has consistently worked since Monster's Ball (barring what appears to be a brief gap in her filmography from 2008-09), but with the possible exception of the X-Men franchise, little of her output has been well-received. She consistently shows up on lists of Oscar winners with the worst post-Oscar output, and whether that's deserved or not, there's an analysis there that's just begging to be written. Anyway, that quibble aside, yet another amazing video.

Hollywood has been using that excuse regarding overseas markets for decades. I'm African-American and I have watched Crazy Rich Asians at least 4-5 times. I thought it was a good movie, not an Asian movie. It's sad that when there is a predominately black cast, it's automatically lumped into "black movie cinema" yet black people go to the movies all the time and will support any film that has zero black actors in it.
@TheBoringAddress

As always, channels like these alone compensate for, like, 75% of KZbin's content. Amazing Consider how many times an acclaimed white actress is said to be "the new" or the heir this or that actress from a previous generation. That's a conversation that could keep a group of film buffs engaged way past closing time, and as simplistic as it might appear, it allows an actress (in this case) within a certain narrative, which is not a bad thing for a career, even as limited as roles for women can be, white actresses still have a diversity of paths to choose from. And when it comes to Oscars, you even have the benefit of proper metrics: "This actress is so much like this other because she also was nominated multiple times and never won", "these actresses both won Oscars early in their careers and were considered sweethearts". But now, how easily (or how often) could we apply this game to black actresses? The sample size, at least by using the Awards metric, is so narrow, that it is a major challenge to establish their historical predecessors ("First, only different" as Shonda Rhimes says). This doesn't happen in the same way to black actors, where you can trace a line from Sydney Poitier to Denzel to Michael B. Jordan, for example. Moving forward, and as more and more black actresses start getting better roles, it would be great to dive deeper into the history of roles for black women beyond the mainstream studio system (pre-code, B movies, those directed by black people) and rediscover new points of reference.

I have to say black winning oscars don’t seem to have to same effect on their careers as other races of women winning oscars, Halle berry career didn’t exactly take off once she won an oscar, it actually kinda went stagnant and the movies she did afterwards weren’t really considered good but there’s so many fantastic black actresses in Hollywood who have given Oscar worthy performances that weren’t maids slaves drug addicts or whores and yet they weren’t recognized and if they were still didn’t win, I’m still angry about Whoopi Goldberg and the color purple not winning a single Oscar, it was such a slap in the face, she was fantastic in it and really showcased her voting chops and range as a comedian, maybe they’ll get their due one day

I feel like at a certain point Hollywood was trying to make Zoe Saldana the next Halle...in a sense putting her into every mainstream movie as that token hot coloured actress alongside white men. Only thing that saved her from that exact mold was going the action flick route, probably her being latina helped her with that. When it comes to women of color, Hollywood likes to play by flavors: -You want your parallel Meryl:We give you Viola. -You want your direct/seriousness: We give you Kerry -You want your sorta black....kinda...exotica/twang thang: We give you Zoe You want your "Don't cross me bitch" actress:We give you Taraji You want your assertive, uppity, Prada and Mimosa/passable' taste: We give you Vanessa. -You want goofy/funny/splash of Lucille Ball: We give you Tracee.
