This video is one of the most comprehensive yet simply explained concerning Osgood-Schlatters I've seen. With a 13y/o athlete son that is dealing in his second bout of Osgood-Schlatters, I am interested to know what are your thoughts on kids wearing braces named for this condition during practice, conditioning, and competition?
@SportsInjuryPhysio
@SportsInjuryPhysio 2 жыл бұрын
If the brace allows him to have less pain while playing AND he doesn’t experience a big increase in his pain after playing, then it is useful. However, if it allows him to play more easily but then it hurts a lot more after he played, then his knee is not ready for it and it would be better if he reduced his play time. So it’s a bit trial and error and make sure you guys observe the outcome.

Hi, I have a couple of questions: 1) Would it be possible ( in smaller amounts ) to continue training during OSD treatment? 2. whether ignoring the subject of OSD treatment could be detrimental in the later years of my life 3. is it possible that the knee recovers on its own (I have had this disease for a long time and with time it hurts less and less, the pain is only noticeable when I return from the pitch)
@SportsInjuryPhysio
@SportsInjuryPhysio 4 ай бұрын
1 - that is exactly what I advise in the vide 2 - only if you continue to ++ aggravate it and really push through pain - then it can sometimes cause issues that affect the structure of the knee and cause trouble in later life. 3. yes - if you manage the load on it properly and allow it to recover it usually settles. It is down to growing and the body being more vulnerable to overload during those periods - so it can usually effectively be managed through managing your training loads. However, if you are overly tight or have poor control - those are things I would sort out over time

Great video, thank you so much! My 9 year old daughter has just been diagnosed with this, she is a kean golfer and is gutted she has to have a break. The pain and swelling is quite bad does that mean its a bad case and wil likely take longer to fully heal and more likely to reocur? Thanks
@SportsInjuryPhysio
@SportsInjuryPhysio 2 ай бұрын
No - it just means it is really angry and irritated at the moment. Kids are amazing healers - they are not like us old folk where injuries linger. If she rests it properly it should calm down relatively quickly. As long as you guys manage her training loads well during her growth spurts, it should not be too much of a recurring problem.

Thanks for this video! If the knee is sore on commencement of activity, should the child always stop? He has kind of rested for 2 weeks and we tried a few mins of short sprints (after warming up) like in a match and it was sore …
@SportsInjuryPhysio
@SportsInjuryPhysio Жыл бұрын
It is usually OK if it is only a bit sore and the soreness stops immediately when they stop exercising but the soreness must also get less over exercise sessions - if it kicks in more quickly or more intensely then they need to stop. Also going from resting to sprinting is a big jump in load - it is usually best to ease into it over a couple of weeks and avoid full sprinting at the start.

Hi Gabriela, It depends on how bad it is. If mild I would normally suggest that you first just reduce the time she does it for and see if that allows it to calm down. For example if she does 2 sessions a week and check if there are things within thoses sessions that she can adapt to make it hurt less.

I was diagnosed with it when I was 9-10 years old ( in that time I use to train badminton in the national team), they immobilised my knee for a year almost so I couldn’t do sports. Now I’m 23 years old but the pain is still there and the last 2 mothers it has worsen. And the doctors just tell me that it gonna get better when I stop growing. And I’m just tired of it because I love sports and is already affecting my daily routine. So I don’t know what I can do. Besides that I also have hyper flexibility in my lower limbs
@SportsInjuryPhysio
@SportsInjuryPhysio 3 ай бұрын
At age 23 you have definitely stopped growing, so, even if it started as Osgood-Schlatters the pain is likely now due to something else. I would consult a physiotherapist rather than a doctor because they should be able to provide better rehab advice. This is also something that our team of physiotherapists can help with via video call - my colleague Ross is especially experienced in treating hypermobility related injuries and pain. You can read more about how the online consultations work here: www.sports-injury-physio.com/

any recommendations for a recurrence in an adult after an accident? 18 months after my fall and on going issues that my physiotherapis vs say they have done all the can??
@SportsInjuryPhysio
@SportsInjuryPhysio Жыл бұрын
When this type of pain recurs in an adult it is usually something else because you will no longer have a growth plate so it can't be Osgood Schlatters. However, you can still have damage caused by having OS when you were young and that has now been aggravated and is causing problems. So best is to have it assessed to see what is going on exactly.

You can still recover - you must just take it easy up the stairs and use the railings to take some of your weight off your knee as you climb. And when you cycle, use an easy gear and make sure your seat is high enough ( your leg should be nearly straight when you push the peddle all the way down).

How is my son supposed to play his sports if the only solution is to stop if you're sore? I refuse to except that in 2024 the only solution for a 13 year is to not be active and do not play the sports you love. I don't know if you have played sports at a higher level, but you either do every practice and play hard or you don't play in games.
@SportsInjuryPhysio
@SportsInjuryPhysio 10 ай бұрын
I've worked with lots of high level athletes, including kids, and the only ones who make it to high level sport in their 20s are the ones who learn to manage their injuries and training load when they are young so injuries can recover and they don't stop their careers. Find a physio to work with who can also liase with their coach and together they will work out a plan that allows them to play at a reduced level for a while, recover, then return stronger.

Nah your son needs rest. I had this same problem when i was 11 on both knees. The pain was so bad that a little tap on it would make me scream. But as i kept growing the pain is no longer there. Its gonna suck because you can't be as active as you were before. I remember everyday before soccer practice rubbing voltaren hoping to soften it a bit. There's is nothing you can do to get rid of it. You only manage it from rest. The pain will go as your son grows. It will just be a painless bump
@tammymerryweather1062

What would you do if he broke a bone? If he’s got an injury that needs rest, he needs rest. OG-S can be excruciating if it’s at a high level of inflammation. Sure a kid can play though pain but why when a couple weeks of rest and PT can do a lot towards recovery. Compare that with months of bad bad pain while playing. It also sounds like you can do lasting damage if you push through this pain. Let him rest for a time for the greater good. He can’t help it if he’s growth spurting.

Undiagnosed OS here, my doc tells me NOW - at the tender age of 55 - that I have it. Explains my wonky knees... Nutrition may also play a role. See "Pathophysiology of Osgood-Schlatter Disease: Does Vitamin D have a Role?" by M Smida et al. (open access article). Looking back at my childhood, I don't think I grew that fast. Vitamin D deficiency highly likely. Maybe I overtaxed my tendons by often biking uphill at a low cadence.
