The title 'Oshi no Ko' actually has dual meanings, according to an interview with the author. This is likely why the title is not translated into English but rather left in Japanese. Since they would have to pick one meaning otherwise, and they would lose the second meaning. The first translation of 'Oshi no Ko' means "supporting your favorite idol." The second translates as "the children of the idol you support". Kinda neat as both translations seem to encapsulate the show.

It's not really "supporting your favorite idol". The more accurate translation is "the girl you support", but "oshi no ko" in the context of idols/idol groups just means "favorite member". That's why "oshi no ko" can also mean "the child of your favorite".

Regarding Japanese terms at the beginning of your discussion: First, “isekai” 異世界 means “another world,” and in anime, it refers to a character being transported to a world away from their earth; it could be their current self being transported/teleported (like in Re: Zero), or it could be that they died and got reincarnated into a new body in another world, such as “Mushoku Tensei” or “Tensei shitara Slime datta ken” (Reincarnated as a Slime). In the case of reincarnations, the term is “tensei” 転生. Second, “no” is a possessive particle; for example, “watashi no pen” (my pen), “Kino no tabi” (Kino’s Journeys), “Mahoutsukai no yome” (the magician’s bride / “The Ancient Magus’s Bride"). Third, yes, "ko" means "child," as in "oyakodon" (literally "mother and child bowl"… a rice bowl dish with chicken and egg), and is often used in girls' names, such as Nezuko, Mieruko (Miko), etc. Usually, it's used combination words or used informally, such as "watashi no ko" (my kid). But yes, normally when you're just using the word for child, it's kodomo. "Oshi" (push), btw, is a slang term referring to your favorite in an idol group. For example, I would say, "Oshima Yuko is my oshi" (Oshima Yuko wa watashi no oshi desu) to mean she's my favorite idol from the group AKB48.

I've been waiting for this since it was announced, specifically on this channel. I love your discussion so much, super thoughtful and great reactions! One of my favorites of the year and done by the author of Love is War, Oshi No Ko is truly a class of its own.

After watching the first episode, please watch YOASOBI's music video "IDOL" again. I believe you will have a completely different reaction from before because you will understand why this music video has such a unique music composition, why the visual design is like this, and why the lyrics are crafted in such a way. And you will be moved by it. There is also an official English version. The remarkable aspect of this seemingly unnatural English translation is that it not only matches the sounds of the Japanese language but also aligns with the meaning of the story. In many cases, it matches the sound of the beginning and the end of the lyrics. Moreover, after listening to the Japanese version several times, when you listen to the English version, there are parts where it sounds like Japanese despite being in English. ENG"That emotion melts"=JPN"daremoga mewo" and ENG"Completely deny"=JPN"kanpekijanai" etc .

Let's be careful. Adding the 86 anime logo by mistake on this or any other video thumbnail will probably reduce the videos number of views LOL.

The thumbnail for this video has the 86 logo in the corner, instead of the Oshi no Ko logo.

22:21 The director just said something good, but you were so engrossed in talking that you didn't hear it. So you were chatting away and missed the important lines, and ended up watching the whole of Oshi no ko. You can say you've seen all of Japanese anime!

40:30 Regarding them not finding the doctor’s body: my theory is that the stalker hid it… there is a scene where the stalker approaches the place where he fell. Japanese notes, part 2: Ai’s family name, “Hoshino” is used as a pun in various ways: first of all, “hoshi” 星 means “star,” like the stars in her eyes. The title “Oshi no ko” though most obviously can be translated as “Child of my Favorite Idol,” it can be said also as using the pun “Hoshi no ko,” meaning that Aqua (and Ruby) are both children of stars as well as being Ai’s children.

41:00 - No need for this comment now that the video is so old, but while he was still a doctor he said she died at 12, and if she was still alive at the time Ai showed up she would have been 16, so she died about 4 years before reincarnation. Don't try to make sense of the timing of it, it's reincarnation, the rules can be whatever.
