Our Eye-Opening 24 Hours in CHINA in 2023 (has Shanghai changed?)

We visited Shanghai for the first time in 2016 and have since been there three times. However, our last visit was in 2018, and A LOT has happened since then, in the world overall but in China especially.
Not only that, but the relationship between the West and China has grown increasingly strained over the last few years, especially between the United States and the PRC over issues like Taiwan, human rights, covid, climate change, the South China Sea, and Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
On our way back toward Europe for summer from Asia, the best flight deal ended up being on China Eastern with an overnight layover in Shanghai. We decided to seize the opportunity and revisit a city we had an amazing time in in 2016 and 2018, but we expected had changed a lot since last time...

Heard 80% of vehicles (cars, scooters and buses) in Shanghai are now electric and very quiet. China is ahead of many countries with the effort of going Green within such a short period of time.😂

Having lived in China for several years myself (2005-2011), it's so nice to see a positive representation of the country for foreign travellers. I had the best time there, and met the most friendly and welcoming people I've ever met. Amazing food, incredibly interesting culture and a truly unique place to visit. I can't wait to go back one day!

I am an American and one travels all over, I will tell you about preconception especially when it comes to travel. China in reality is a lot better and nicer than what's often portrayed in videos. US, especially liberal cities like SF, LA, and NY, is often way worse in reality than what's portrayed in videos.

I have been to those US cities and some of those I even have lived there more than decades long. As matter of fact, I just took my friends who came from Taiwan Province for a long west coast trip from Seattle Wa. down to San Diego, Ca. Last week. Oh my lord and we still feel so……. bad and sad about what we saw in our one long wk of driving trip on the road to those cities and countryside! We never expected to experience in seeing so many homeless people living in tents and cardboard boxes, shopping carts, trashes, graffitis, broken glass windows , black and faded walls probably with blood and urine residues everywhere, in SF, SJ, Seattle Portland, LA, SD. Hollywood movie called walking dead is happening real right now in those cities!!! Sigh,…… unbelievable reallllly….

As a foreigner living in Shanghai, it's weird to see how people are scared or still have all these misconceptions and stereotypes about life in China, mostly because of the Western media which most foreigners in China still consume but I guess it doesn't sink in with us because we can tell what the reality of the country is. Yep, I just visited it for the 2nd time in my life about a month ago. The 1st time was back in 2007 before the iPhone came out. It was some experience to ride that Maglev traveling at 431kph! This time around, it was limited to only 300kph to conserve energy. I later experienced the 350kph conventional highspeed train when traveling from Shenzhen to Guangzhou which took only about half hour. It's interesting there's now a subway line that connects Pudong airport to the rest of Shanghai but i think it takes close to an hour to get to the same maglev station from the airport. Most people still take the subway / metro because it's so much cheaper. Another cool thing I experienced was going from Shanghai all the way to the heart of Suzhou only by subway / metro. We took Shanghai Metro Line 11 to Kunshan Huaqiao Station and transferred to a brand new Suzhou metro line there. The new Suzhou metro train set was fully autonomous. It was surreal.

Nice to see your perspective of Shanghai.Before coming to China,the media coverage on China l had come across was usually negative.Many people in my country including me mistakenly believed that China was a poor country,where there was only oppression without freedom.But when l came to China,l found China is AMAZING! l dare say China is better than the West in many ways.Modernization,convenience,hospitality,safety,all of these has left a positive impression on me. I deeply appreciated how excellent China has developed.China is a cashless society, and I have adapted to mobile payment. The Chinese people I saw were very friendly and helped me a lot. But the Chinese are not good at English, so I am trying to learn Chinese and understand their culture.

Just wanted to point out that just because they don't speak English doesn't mean they don't know anything about the outside world. If you can actually have a conversation with Chinese people you'll know they actually do know a lot of about the outside world and are surprisingly attuned to world politics. Shanghai is amazing! I was really impressed when I visited for a week in May, people are so friendly and nice, the food is delicious, and the famous skyline is just so impressive! I loved how elderly people were dancing and doing Tai Chi in the parks. But the people were the biggest surprise to me and how friendly and nice they were. Also the metro is amazing, we used it all the time, and it's cheap and goes anywhere, not need to use taxis in the city at all.

Awesome video. Having visited China once before in 2007, I already knew back then that it overshadowed by far anything that my own country could put up. Now, so many years later I’ve seen tons of KZbin videos from travellers in China, and it looks like the country has taken massive leaps forward from when I last saw it. I remember back then that the cities really come to life at night when people knock off from work, and the restaurants and nightlife starts up, especially after the heat of the day in summer, when people come out in the cooler evenings. Over this time, I’ve also been really sad to see how that country is depicted in the western media. No wonder people are terrified of China, based on what is selectively reported. The truth however has never made for good headlines or ratings, so ….

Loved this video, so great to see you went back after so many years! I finally had the chance to go to China this past June after wanting to go since I was little, I went with my bf and traveled to 5 cities in 3 weeks! Shanghai, Beijing, Wuhan, Shenzhen & Hangzhou! I already watched a lot of chinese shows, listen to chinese music, watch vloggers for many years in China but I was still so blown away by everything once I got to see in first hand. Just an absolutely incredible country, people are insanely friendly, its beyond safe, affordable and SO convenient for travel. I took x2 high speed trains & x2 flights and they were some of the most comfortable methods of transport I've ever taken in my life. China has a bad reputation in the west probably because they're advancing so fast and taking great strides in what other countries can't seem to do. I felt so welcomed as a foreigner there, I will be going back very often! planning to go in December already :D

My godparents lived briefly in Hong Kong in the late 70s/early 80s & one of the trips we took,besides going to see The Great Wall,was to Shanghai which is so unbelievably changed, its hard to put into words,I spent a long weekend with friends of theirs & they lived in an antique house in an antique area,which has all been torn down now. The smell of jasmine & other wonderful flowers was everywhere as well as the ubiquitous food smells. I'm utterly fascinated by the skyline,so thank you for the beautiful views. Yo Oskar & Dan. I just spent 5 days in Shanghai last week. I was granted the free 144hr visa on arrival (free of charge.) Chinese immigration were professional and friendly. I must admit I did use a VPN in China in order to use social media. I spent 5 nights in a $15AUD hostel where the Chinese guys in dorm where extremely friendly , and we even went out clubbing one night. Throughout those 5 days the Chinese were so friendly and 2 Chinese women even asked if I want to go on the century park electric boats with them , which was a great experience. Some of my favourites places in Shanghai were century park , the Bund , Yu Garden and Zhujiaojiao. I am so excited to re visit China and explore many other cities. Guys it’s disappointing seeing you eat a tourist restaurant imo yous should eat at a traditional canteen.

China is actually very diverse (its Diversity index is on par with the US even with the official measure rather than the real one, which is far higher). There are 56 National Minorities but 180 unofficial ones -as 120 of them were lumped together into one, as the Han ethnic group, despite this one group speaking 200 languages (and even more dialects) and the difference in looks, culture, dress, cuisine and DNA -overnight it became the worlds largest ethnic group when it was 'created' in the 1960s. There are 40-400 cuisines, 300 languages, 6 major religions (though the world's largest percentage of atheists) and every type of lifestyle and culture made by the most diverse landscapes in one country, from jungle tribes to sea gipsies, Tibetan monks to Islamic clerics, desert caravans to African traders, city dwellers to reindeer herders, cowboys to cowgirls. The cities hold random things like the world's biggest drag and dancehall scene, to hanfu hipsters, to 200,000 eco groups, to the world's largest contemporary art market and scene. In short China is completely different to Western perceptions, who assume it's more North Korea than New York.

@@andia968 Yes, but the 'same written language' is like using the romanised script for all European languages. The traditional clothing is not the same (just look at the vastly differing wedding dress styles between provinces, as a pointer to the former national costumes), and the 'love of red' is a trend, just like fashion would have been in Europe. Pretty much all the unifying aspects one could apply the same to the whole of Europe (or any subcontinent), from Christianity to architecture, to musical instruments to religious festivals. Oh and there are 40-400 cuisine types in China, depending on where you draw the lines.

I am living in Shanghai since 2019 - I know, GREAT timing - but showed a friend around last week who was on a daytime stayover and seeing it through someone else's eyes and showing them the sights. We of course ended with the Bund but not quite at daytime but it reminds me how pretty it is. We also had lots of photos taken with us! LOL I didn't realise there was so few foreigners in China! It's a pity you missed the marriage market in the People's park! Glad you enjoyed it!

one thing to add that Chinese green cards are extremely difficult to get. China is NOT an immigration country, so it sets the criteria very high for green card applications Unless you choose to obtain it through marriage, otherwise you must have high achievements in your relative field / industry, or have made significant contributions to the country.

As a Chinese, although Shanghai is highly developed in economic terms, it is not the most modern city in China in terms of urbanization alone, as many Chinese cities now have a newer urbanization. since Shanghai was developed so early, there are many Chinese cities that have a newer architecture nowadays. A typical city is Shenzhen, which is now the world's largest city in terms of buildings over 200 meters tall, surpassing New York.

Nice video! I went back to China a month ago and it was an interesting experience, some of the major attractions I went to were extremely crowded and I was often pushed around by strangers, not to mention the strong smell of smoke near buildings and inside taxis which bothered me A LOT. The weather was scorching hot too, days in Beijing over 40 celcius, even hotter than Dubai where we flew in from(seriously!) Outside of that, I got to see lots of China's unique and otherworldly natural beauty as well as many famous attractions (Great Wall, Pandas, etc.), had a great time overall exploring more parts of the country :D

However my visit in Beijing was during the annual Dragon Boat Festival Holiday or Duanwujie(unfortunately) making areas like Summer Palace packed with people as kids are out of school for the weekend. I absolutely agree with you in visiting during spring or autumn as the heat in Beijing in summer was unbearable 😅

I used to travel to China for work every month. I do miss China and yes, they are actually way more advance than what the western world thinks. They have innovative products and amazing skyscrapers. The only thing I don't like is the difficulty in flagging down a taxi. They almost exclusively take on passengers only on DiDi and without a wallet function in one of their local apps, it is difficult for foreigners.
