After watching this discussion, I bought the novel Bastard of Istanbul. And while did I begin to read this, it forced me to finish within two and a half day with an eager. Now I may dreamt it as nightmare. So painful reality, pierced through my heart. I swear a great respect to the novelist Elif Safak. I must read her other pieces. It"s a strong desire to fulfill. Thanks to her for her great novel.

Democracy is indeed fragile since after all humanity that creates it and applies it is fragile. However the sad thing for me, as a Turkish person, was to realise how shallow the roots of our so called democratic institutions in Turkey in fact were. So easy to up-root in a relatively short period of time. Yet honored to have thinking, questioning, courageous people like Elif Hn. as a child of this land; who, I am sure, will inspire many other young women and men to step out to think, question and indeed speak. We need her and many more like her.

I agree with your sentiment. Elif is A great light in the world. She loves Turkey. I believe she is a National treasure. I first came across her through poetry.

Born in France, London is her home, has been European all her life & in experience, and yet is introduced as Turkish. No wonder Europe is so fragmented.

As a turkish citizen it really sad to hear this words from a turkish women who thinks she is represting turkey a journalist, every year LGBT has the right to walk in Taksim one of the most famous central cities in Istanbul, They get to celebrate there sexual identity, After many years of hijab ban in schools and governmental departments Erdogan gave the turkish women the right to wear whatever she wants whether she want to wear a head scarf or mini skirt, Democracy has chosen Erdogan Mrs. Elif Shafak and it’s in your and the turkish citizens hand to change that by voting, just becuase of your hate for Erdogan you can’t deny all the rights that is given to you as a women journalist, and I think that after this interview you went back to you country with no fear of expressing your your opinion, If I’m sad about my regime I would talk that in my country ! I would never talk it with foreigners, no wonder you are popular outside turkey they like what you talk about Turkey !
