Do you carry a Tent etc in the larger bag ?
@indietraveller
@indietraveller 7 жыл бұрын
No I don't carry a tent or any camping equipment - I have at most a sleeping bag. If it's for camping/trekking I'd probably recommend a 60 - 70L backpack (a single one, not with a detachable daypack). This other video shows roughly what I pack in a 40L backpack for a trip to a summer or tropical destination. It might give some indication of how much will fit in something just a bit bigger: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bJqWl4iDopWXnK8

I don't know how anyone can truly travel without complete self-sufficiency.. I tried it once and ended up sleeping on park benches and shivering at 4am in bushes... At least the basics like a 1kg one man tent, inflatable mattress and sleeping bag have to be the foundation of any true travelers go bag. Otherwise it's a case of always being dependent on others to provide warmth and shelter.

damn that's clever ! i knew there was some "work for accomodation" deal but i didn't think about graphic design and now it seems obvious that any hostel or Youth hostel need some party flyers, or activity flyers. well good to know. Thanks.

This was posted quite a while ago but I figure I have some insight here. I have used my farpoint 55 m/l almost exclusively as a wilderness backpack on trips as long as a week through hikes and have carried my REI half dome+ internally in the main pack as well as strapped to the outside using the compression straps that normally go around the daypack when it is attached. That is, I have wilderness backpacked with the tent inside, jetboil inside, food inside, socks and underwear inside and a couple extras. Then I put anything more in the daypack and the sleeping pad in the straps externally at the bottom of the pack. While it is obviously designed more around travel backpacking it has been an amazing pack in the U.S. national and state parks. The tent takes up quite a bit of room internally so you should be comfortable not packing too many extras. For some perspective I have used this pack for 2 years of wilderness backpacking on probably 60+ nights of camping. Hope this helps someone!

Awesome review! I wanted to add a couple of details for others since I own this bag: 1. According to Amazon’s listing, the main bag is 42L and daypack is 13L, which makes more sense to me than 40/15, given the physical size of the bags. 2. For fitting the bag into the overhead bin on a plane, put the top in first, since it comes to a point. Doing it this way, it’ll fit every time. If I were questioned, I’d explain to the employees at the gate that this bag accommodates the actual size and shape of the overhead bin, while the limits were created for rectangular luggage that doesn’t fill the space of the overhead bin efficiently. I’ve only ever been stopped once though, and it was before I realized this. I haven’t had trouble since, so I’m just saving that explanation for a rainy day haha.

Great tips David, thanks for sharing! That daypack did always strike me as a little smaller than 15L.

That's a great advice, thanks. Have you been often asked about it's size by the airport gate staff?
@RosenblumStudios
@RosenblumStudios 2 жыл бұрын
@@ladyleica8113 the many times I flew with it, I was never questioned about its dimensions. Weight was an issue once, but that’s different. I have since switched to using smaller bags, though. If you’re considering the Farpoint/Fairview 55, I suggest also considering at the 40L version and using a packed daypack. That would be more compact overall when in transit and still has plenty of space.

Just to clear things up: The 55SM is significantly shorter than the 55ML and works as carry-on size! just tried the Farpoint 40ML, Farpoint 55SM and Farpoint 55ML in a store. The 55ML is definitely to long for carry on and cannot be compressed due to the metal frame. The 55SM is about 5cm shorter and right between the 40ML and 55ML. Technically speaking the 55SM is slightly above carry-on size (3-4cm) whereas the 55ML is significantly above (8-10cm), visually speaking I doubt you'll ever get into trouble with the 55SM since it looks really slim. Interestingly the length of the carrying system of the 40ML and 55SM are about the same - I don't see why anyone at my height (5'11") should choose the 55ML with carry-on usage in mind. From my experience the 55ML should work on many airlines but I wouldn't want to take my chances

Thanks for the info Roman. I'm a similar size; 6 - 6'1ft roughly. Would the 55 S/M fit me? Is the only difference between the two the couple of cm in length? They're both capable of storing 40L and 15L in the main and day bags? Cheers
@Roman-nu1om
@Roman-nu1om 6 жыл бұрын
Mitch L The 55SM should still fit but would be right on the edge of being too small depending on your body composition and proportions. If you have Mike Tyson height and body strength the straps will be too short to encompass your upper torso. I disagree with the often cited claim that both bags (40 vs. 55 minus the daybag) have about the same volume, I could fit significantly more into the 55SM (with the daypack removed!) than in the 40ML with the 55SM having better weight distribution since its slimmer (I own both packs). The 55ML will be even larger but only tried that in the store since it will be a gamble to take that on a plane. I think Osprey played it safe and made the Farpoint 40 unnecessarily short just to meet carry on size limit on paper whereas in real world a 60cm bag (but not more!) is no problem and fits every overhead compartment on a plane I've come across (I've used a 60cm bag before for many years) Furthermore on buses, trains and small planes bag length is not the issue but thickness and this is where the Farpoint 40 could become troublesome, I had two occasions on my last holiday where the longer but slimmer 55 would narrowly fit but the 40 won't due to the included daypack which cannot be removed like on the 55. Makes me wonder if all these youtube guys here praising the Farpoint 40 are actually using it or just posting videos about...

On Ryan Air? Forget it :D lol Ryan Air is super strict because they want to earn additional money becasue the flights are so cheap. Dont take this bag if you dont want to pay. 40cm x 25cm x 20cm - Standard 55cm x 40cm x 20cm - Priority (costs extra) 81cm x 119cm x 119cm - Checked In Baggage (costs extra) Thinking about "getting away with it" on an airline like RyanAir - costs extra (and more than if you have had done it before)

I never understood why those people buy these. I know its promoted as "carry on" but every review online has to sheepishly confess that it isnt carry-on. So do yourself a favor, and buy one size smaller. If you like Osprey, buy a Farpoint 40 and additionally some nice daypack. You wont carry the big bag for so long so its enough if you use the shoulder strap. Or do the old backpacker hack and wear the daypack on front (which is also safer in big cities because of pickpocketing) Also, dont try the Ozone 65 Duplex - it is also marketed this way, but only the cargo bag part is more or less within the dimensions, but the daypack isnt, by far. Too bad that Osprey doesnt really have a combo that adhere to airline regulations for carry-on AND daypack - they only manage to get it right with one. So, until they fixed it, you have to mix and match yourself.

Good comment. I've come to view this the same way (I wrote a comparison of all the farpoints here www.indietraveller.co/osprey-farpoint-40-vs-55/ ). Often it can be easier to get a carry-on plus a separate daypack that fits your specific daypack needs. Would be nice if there was a universal system for clicking any Osprey daypack and main pack together.

@indietraveller
@indietraveller 6 жыл бұрын
The Osprey website has a size chart with recommendations - M/L is probably best for you. The difference is just the height (this also makes the M/L about 2 liter bigger) and the length of the straps and such, but no other differences in features :)

indietraveller Thank you. I appreciate your insight. I think I've now got it narrowed down to either the Tortuga Setout, Aer Travel Pack or GoRuck G2. I recognize the latter two have a smaller capacity than the former. I ultra-lighted my thru-hike on the Appalachian Trail, so minimalism is in the blood (this purchase wouldn't be for that style of adventure). The one big strike I have against the GoRuck is traveling the world and being perceived as a 'Murican." I think they're" militaristic approach" could present a negative social impression. Appreciate your vlogging. Safe travels. GH

You are a lucky guy. My Osprey farpoint 55 started to fall appart 15 days into my holidays. The mesh that holds water bottles started to break very quickly. I got it sent to Osprey, and they badly sewed it and said the fact that the bag had got broken was not due to a manufacturing defect. Will never buy an Osprey rucksack again as Osprey don´t honour their lifetime guarantee.

@Roman-nu1om
@Roman-nu1om 6 жыл бұрын
I'm not affiliated with Osprey but your comment just shows that it's a waste of time to argue with customers who don't understand the concept of warranty and thus claim any defect as "guarantee" just because they feel entitled to. Of course the bag fell apart by itself and you didn't do anything wrong, by not taking responsibility you're loosing control of the situation and feel helpless and neglected. Now in your case osprey even repaired the bag nonetheless yet it's not good enough for your high standards.

1 question, I keep reading that people use these bags for carry on but the max wheight limit for this is 14kg! So how can people pack for long trips under 14kg (most air companies even max 10kg)? That's crazy because a laptop, cameran shoes and the backpack itself are already about 10kg..
@indietraveller
@indietraveller 6 жыл бұрын
Maybe you're overestimating the weight or packing too much? :) When I pack 7 to 10 days worth of clothing, 2 pairs of shoes, a lightweight laptop, camera, toiletries, 1 or 2 books and more, it weighs about 10kg. I share more details on this here: www.indietraveller.co/how-to-pack-light/ I traveled long-term in this way. (Maybe not everyone wants to pack minimalistically though in which case you can get a bigger bag of course.)

There is a frame all around the edge, so I don't think you can shorten it that much. That said, I've taken it as carry-on quite a few times (without the day pack attached) and didn't have problems. This is obviously hugely dependent on the airline though :)

Mitch L If you mean me I ended up buying both the 40ML and 55SM and took the 55SM to a 4 week trip to South America which included 5 flights. I'm 5'11" with relatively long legs (34" inseam) and the 55SM did fit me although one could see its close to the edge of being too small (the backstraps) but still ok. On two planes the 2" longer 55ML wouldn't have fit so it's either the 40ML or 55SM if you want to be safe for carry-on, I wouldn't recommend the 55SM for people above 6' though especially if you've a longer upper body and shorter legs.

The Farpoint is a bit softer / more malleable, it also has a harness which has wider shoulder straps and a fully padded hip belt. They're both in a very similar category but I'd say the Porter is just a bit more for urban travel and the Farpoint a bit more for adventure travel. E.g. I took the Farpoint trekking in the Himalayas and it was fine thanks to the comfortable padded harness, but I may have hesitated bringing the Porter with its basic straps. Both will do fine for general travel purposes though! If you're going for the Porter 46, you might want to hold off on buying as a new model is coming Aug 2017. (I have it on order and will be reviewing it soon).

is having the secondary backback on the Farpoint 55 a help or a hindrance? Does it get in the way?
@indietraveller
@indietraveller 7 жыл бұрын
I like it... makes it more versatile. If I got the Porter I would probably still get a small foldable daypack for use during the day (when sightseeing etc.)

can you pls share more on the experience you had with this backpack that you had in the Himalayas? did you carry any camping gear like tent, sleeping bag etc? how much weight did you carry? how many days did you trek?
@indietraveller
@indietraveller 6 жыл бұрын
I trekked for 7 days via so-called tea house routes in Nepal, which meant that I slept and ate in tea houses and lodges along the way and did not carry my own tent or sleeping bag. For this type of trekking, I can recommend this backpack. But if you will be camping, I would probably look at other slightly larger trekking backpacks that have dedicated space for a tent / sleeping bag and other handy features. (For example check out the Osprey Atmos AG 65)

Did the blue color get dirty over time?

No noticeable fading if that's what you mean, but it does get dirty like any other bag. I just took it hiking in Nepal where it got in the mud a few times, so I'm going to give it a little clean.

Hi! Just curious. I am from Phils and there's a reseller of osprey farpont 55who said to be a legit seller from Vietnam but he lives in the Philippines. Is Osprey packs are made also Vietnam? Really need an advice on this. Thanks in advance everyone!

Hi thanks for all the great work. I'm wondering which size should I go for S/M or M/L ? I'm 169 cm tall (5 ft 6) and weigh 63 kg (140 pounds)
@indietraveller
@indietraveller 7 жыл бұрын
Hey Ahmed, thanks! Osprey's own recommendations for this are not based on your total height but on your torso height (from your hip bone to just above your shoulders). Size recommendations for the Farpoint series: Under 17" or 43cm = S/M 18 or 19" /46 - 48 cm = can be either S/M or M/L, depending on your preference 20" or 51cm+ = M/L I know these measurements are annoying! I didn't even know my own torso length until I measured it. But I guess it's the correct way.

hi, is it waterproof?

It's water resistant and I've carried it through the rain a bunch of times. If you're going to carry it through the rain for long periods of time you may wish to purchase a rain cover though.
