totally agree, not a fan of the dual style backpack+daypack.. you compromise on both the main pack and the daypack

Yeah, i got the fairpoint 55 because i thought the 40 was not enough space for me, only to realize that the main bag is actually 40l capacity, and not really carry on friendly. My bad for not doing proper research, but i hated that i ended up sacrificing both space and the carry on freedom with that one. I actually like the daypack, but it didnt justified the whole thing.

Would you say it’s comfortable enough to take on a backpacking trip in the outdoors? Or is it more for backing where you don’t walk to much?

Great review. Would this be suitable for multi-day hikes? Does it have anywhere you can hang trekking poles?

Yeah I used it on multi-day hikes and it was great. Not sure about trekking poles, I guess they can fit in stretch pockets on the side, which have a compression strap that would keep them in place

What is the length of the frame? I have an Atmos 65 which in theory is over the carry on limit, but once I remove the lid, because the upper part of the main compartment is soft, I never had problems using it as a carry on since the length of the frame is only about 24 inches.

It's 28.5 inches tall, and cannot be squished because the wire frame runs the perimeter.

I can't tell if it has a zip up back panel to hide the straps, or if it just depends on the larger rain cover to wrap everything up. I hope it does have a back panel to sip everything up. I wouldn't want to have to cover it all up completely when traveling on through airports. Thanks ....

It does not have an attached back panel like the regular Farpoint - it relies on the AirTravel cover to wrap it all up. But the back of the cover zips open to give you access to the harness system with the cover still on, then you zip it up at the check-in counter.

In terms of the harness, how do you find the Vanilla 40L vs Vanilla 55L? I have the 55L, but looking to swap it out for the new 40L (due in July) so that it’s carryon compliant

It's honestly been a few years now since I owned the vanilla 55 but I remember liking the harness just slightly more than the 40 (maybe it's just because it's taller rather than deep, so weight is a bit more balanced). I'm very happy with the 40 though... I still own it whereas I eventually sold the vanilla 55
