Agreed, it's a great size and holds more than you think. The 46 is too large for the should straps they have on that pack.

This is so smart to compare the capacities because for long travels (gap years, living abroad for months,etc) this is super important and if we buy the bag online, we can't try it. Great comparison of the two sizes. I have the Porter 30 in my travel bag collection. I do like it overall. It holds more than it looks like it would and is comfortable to carry. I do wish it had a dedicated water bottle pocket, and while it is comfortable to carry it does feel a bit like a protruding ball strapped to my back, versus my favorite backpacks made by Tom Bihn that gently hug and caress my back. That said, Tom Bihn packs cost a small fortune and, for a much more affordable price, the Osprey Porter 30 works just fine.

I saw a couple of guys wearing the Porter 46 fully load on the CDG París airport one time; yes the backpack was bulky and yes, it was out of the measure of carry on politics but they didnt have any problem to pass. By the way i have a farpoint 40 and i love it...excellent video.

I've noticed that too. Backpacks tend to not get as much attention as rolling luggage, even if they're overpacked.

I am 5'5" and have the 30L. Husband is 6'2" and has the 46L and they fit us each well. Swapping bags is quite uncomfortable, but TBH any fully packed bag >40L is too much for me to realistically carry on my back.

I finally got to take my Porter 30 out on a proper trip (10 days in Italy with husband and two pre-teen kids.) I also carry a small crossbody as my daypack and that combo was perfect for me. Slightly underpacked to meet picky Lufthansa requirements on way over and on way back maxed it out on United. I could not realistically carry any more weight than the 30 fully loaded (5'5" 120lb) so the 46 would be overkill for sure.

Husband decided to carry the mid-90s Eagle creek pack he inherited from his Dad instead of his Porter 46. The vintage model is just a much more comfortable carry for him and sits closer to his center of gravity. I swear we will pack up that old Eagle Creek bag and he will take it to his grave.

Had the 46 but felt it would've been dicey for carryo-on (though I feel they'd still let me use it). Anyway, went with the smaller olive green Porter 30 and no regrets...looks great and holds a lot.

The trick is not to fill up the 46 to the brim and using the compression straps if they say is too big. Thats the nice thing about soft carry ons like backpacks. Usually they don't even say anything even if it's bigger because it can be squished into any dimension.

Porter 46 is the best bag ever! It has so much organization, it's a lauggage, the laptop placement is well secured and it can carry SO MUCH!!!! The only Downside is I look like a Ninja Turtle xD But maybe that's a plus in diguise...

Just bought the new 2021 Porter 30 and it has the top load adjuster straps now. Also, unfortunately, the light colored interior is now switched to a darker colored gray. Almost the perfect bag, however for one-bag travel.

Thanks for the very clear comparison. I am leaning towards the 46 to have the extra space if I need it, but also want the bag to be less bulky for when I use it on weekend trips and keeping a low profile on buses etc...like a day pack. The 30 and 46 sizes are noticeably different when fully packed, but I am curious how the side profiles look when they are emptied and compressed. Are the sizes still noticeably different? I have a huge complaint regarding this comparison. Why didn't you post it 5 years ago??? I fell in love with the Porter and chose the 46L because I carry not only my clothes but tech. I'm a 5 foot 4 female apparently I'm also an idiot. 🤷‍♀️ Yes, I have gear bags that are in the 60 to 90L range but this was supposed to be a travel bag and I rarely take it out anymore. 46 liters with that straight jacket design is simply too heavy! The sides are well padded because of the side panel the compression straps attach to, but the top and bottom aren't. You would have to stuff something in there to protect it if you're trying to carry a PC.

None of these bags fit the personal item requirement. You cannot take them in Allegiant, Frontier, to Spirit etc. without a fee. 🤔🤔🤔🤔

The Osprey Porter 46 is too big for most airlines when traveling around Europe y low cost on the US. Also, The older model of the Porter 30 is about 5-7 litters bigger than the new model. I can fit the new porter 30 model into the older model without folding it, I cannot do that the other way around. Except for the placement of the laptop compartment, the older model is much better for carry-on.

Could you use the 30L version as a personal item if you don't load it fully? I am looking for a backpack which can fit those measurements while still having room and it's also weatherproof. If anyone has any suggestions it would be really helpful :))

Probably not, it's almost 2" taller than most airlines allow for a personal item. There aren't many options for weatherproof for a large personal item pack that I know of, but many bags have water resistant coatings, or use a water resistant fabric like Cotopaxi, or any bag with X-Pac fabric will be fairly water proof. If you're looking for a max personal item sized bag, (will just barely fit in a 18x14x8 bin). Check out the Cotopaxi Allpa 28, Aer Travel Pack 2 Small, Evergoods CPL24, Patagonia Tres 25, Cabin Zero Military 28. Aer also has other packs that would work well, like the Flight and City Pack. Cabin Zero has other options as well, Classic 28, Classic Plus 28. A few others: Thule Aion 28, Boundary Supply Errant Pack, Pacsafe Vibe 28, DSPTCH Daypack. Also try looking at my bag table for options, you can filter by capacity, dimensions, etc. It mostly focuses on larger "travel" packs, ie not many ECD type backpack packs.
