The Weirdest Way to Play Portal

I've played through all of Portal in many unique and interesting ways in the past. Recently on a stream, I found one of the most bizarre ways of doing so - through Half Life: Source.

If it was portal 2, you'd probably die of fall damage after Glados throws you into the incinerator after she wakes up.

@@fredrickdenning7328 No, actually. The map change there is a complete reset. It even gets rid of your weapons. The game just completely unloads whatever was loaded and loads the incinerator map. You don't keep momentum between most map changes anyway.

The cube holding all of Glados together has got to be one of the most realistic depictions of IT ever. Kill the seemingly unrelated, detached block and boom, the main computer just dies.

Fun Fact: It's done that way because the entity which plays GLaDOS's lines requires a model to be set. The reason they specifically chose the cube model is because the game will precache the model it uses so that it can be quickly accessed while the game is running. There is already a cube in pretty much all of the maps in the game, so the cube model is used so the game doesn't waste memory precaching a model that isn't seen normally. Admittedly, there are certainly better models they could use, such as the player's world model, which is always precached as it can be seen through portals.

This is an Alternate Universe where at the end of the events of Half Life, Gordon, instead of being sent to City 17, is sent to Aperture Science laboratories to extinguish the final remnants of the company's existence, taking Chell's place in the timeline and destroying GLaDOS enough to prevent a revival. In the teleportation, Chell would have been sent to City 17 in place of Gordon to stand on for him. How her story would wind up proceeding is a mystery.
