Yeah, I think it was because an alternative timeline was created by those pillar demons in grand order that bedivere didn't throw away excalibur, which resulted in Artoria not being able to die and then having her personality becoming warped, which you then have the sad task of having to put her down.

Essentially, always alone. However, if it weren't forever, it would be less beautiful as well. Thus, the same thing that makes it beautiful, makes it sad. Such is the unfair truth of her existence.

+wingbullet I completely agree. The very concept of eternity in contrast with the transcience of life evokes a paradoxical train of thought. The irony lies in Saber constantly reminding Shirou of his sense of self despite the nature of her duties. Relative to the infinite amount of time spent alone, mathematically, her time with Shirou is bound to zero, however it is their unconditional love that transcends this mundane existence. I believe that time is a vast entity that influences everything physically in existence, but perception can alter this. Her eternal duty matches not her ephermeral love.

The anime only screwed up if you ever read the visual novels or care about them. Neither apply to me so I enjoyed this anime very, very much. I've seen both Fate/Zero and UBW as well and I actually prefer this due to the touching storyline, characters, and its music. Despite the claim that it isn't as true to its original work because it doesn't strictly follow only the Fate route, when I think of Fate/Stay Night, I actually think of this version, ironically.

Divine Aria I 100% agree with you. I've played the entire VN after watching every adaptation of Fate and the UBW adaptation from Ufotable is also missing a TON of important things as well, not only the 2006 one, though they let it slide with UBW because it has good animation. When it comes to the story, romance and characters I prefer the 2006 one by quite far (despite its outdated animation), plus the OST is beautiful and they really nailed the atmosphere of the Visual Novel. The Fate VN is the best in every single way though.
