osteoporotic spine fractures... what are they, how are they managed and how to prevent them

Hello everyone, today we're going to talk about osteoporotic spine fractures, also known as fragility fractures. These are stable fractures that can be caused by something as trivial as a fall or a bumpy car ride. They can cause pain and difficulty getting up from bed, lying in bed and moving in bed.
Mostly located in the junction of the thoracic spine and lumbar spine, these fractures are usually managed with pain medications and calcium and vitamin D supplements. However, severe pain with decreased mobility due to fracture can be managed by vertebroplasty.
Vertebroplasty is a procedure where cement is injected into the fractured vertebrae to reduce pain. If a patient has neurological loss such as weakness in their legs, they may need surgery to decompress the spinal cord and fixate unstable vertebrae.
So, if you experience any of these symptoms, it's important to consult with a doctor. Remember, prevention is always better than cure. Take care of your bones by maintaining a healthy diet rich in calcium and vitamin D, exercising regularly, and avoiding smoking and excessive alcohol consumption.
