I am lucky/unlucky that I stayed in the hospital 80 days post op and so the stoma nurse and I ordered a whole bunch of samples/she gave them to me to try out. So by the time I left the hospital I knew exactly what supplies I wanted. I personally hate Hollister. It was what my hospital used as ostomy supplies. I feel like the bags are bulky and cheap. The bag I currently use is the Marlen Mini-max (7inches long vs. 12 inches) Opaque Convex Onepiece Drainable Bags with filter. I tried it in the hospital so it was what I ordered when I got out. Since they have to be special ordered and take a few weeks to get in I keep some back up Hollister bags in case there is a lapse in me getting my bags. I tried Hollister, Coloplast, Convatech, and Marlen Bags. If I hadn't gone with Marlen which had my literally perfect bag I would have gone with Coloplast. I prefer one piece that are opaque with a window because they sit much closer to the body. I don't hate two pieces but I just don't really see the point of them because there are such great one piece bags. For the other supplies I use, I use the Eakin Barrier Rings (I tried paste and hated it), Coloplast Barrier Strips (these are amazing and are like reinforcing band aids for the edges of the wafer). Coloplast Barrier Spray, Adapt Stoma Powder, Adapt Adhesive Remover Wipes, Adapt Adhesive Spray (this makes your skin super sticky so it makes the wafer stick so well), and skin prep wipes (this just adds and additional layer between my skin and the wafer). My bags only come in cut to fit so when I fill up my supply bag I just cut my bags to 1" and so when I am doing changes I don't have to cut. I also keep napkins and plastic bags in my stoma care bag so I can throw away all my supplies when I am doing a change and the old bag, the plastic bag also make sure no smell occurs when you throw it all in a trash can. During a normal change I use the adhesive remover wipes. I then use napkins to clean excess output off my skin and stoma. I use a skin prep wipe and then skin barrier spray. Then I put on the adhesive spray and barrier ring. Then my bag and lastly my Coloplast Barrier strips. I only use stoma powder if my skin is irritated.

I'm so glad you mentioned your painful incident from alcohol in the paste. I have a loop ileostomy (looks like a chubby little 3 1/2" long hot dog with a hole in each end) which is very difficult to get an accurate measurement for the wafer opening. The cut-to-size trial-and-error resulted in unprotected skin next to the stoma which became very irritated. I was going to apply Coloplast Paste to the irritation as a barrier until I watched your video. I checked the info sheet and it has alcohol. Thanks Emily!

I am so glad that I clicked on your video. I was stage 4 colon cancer January 2019. I also was overwhelmed and completely in the dark. I couldn't think straight with all the stuff that was forced on me. Finally I am getting much better and almost can ace this situation now😊👍🏽. Watching your video taught me some new stuff today. Your video was very very help and I wish that I clicked on from the very beginning. Life would have been less stressful these last 6 months. Thank you

I would love to hear more about the non drainable bags! I just got my ostomy and I hate emptying it.
@EmilyParrisVideos
@EmilyParrisVideos 6 жыл бұрын
It really depends on your output. My output was REALLY thick and slow. So it was hard getting it to drain + I didn't really poop enough to need to empty it. I changed my close ended bags once in the morning, afternoon & then once at night. Sometimes I would have to do a middle of the night change. Hollister close ended bags come in a box of sixty & my insurance only covered 1 box per month so that was only 2 bags a day for my monthly supply. So we paid out of pocket for the second box. Drainable bags were nice to have on hand though just in case I ate something that made my output really high. All you do with the close ended bag is click it off, wipe around the inside of your wafer with a baby wipe & click on a new bag! It's great!

Drainable bags are a must or a Ileostomy. You can empty the m many times. It such a waste and has a bad effect on the environment using (and having to dispose of) so many bags. With a liquidy stool, you need DRAINABLE bag. Closed bags usually for folks with a Colostomy, who can just "poop" a firm output once a day. Don't use closed bags just because you are too lazy to empty drainables. A closed bag would also be FULL to dispose of!! Yuk!!

Hey Emily! You’re such a sweet gal! I don’t have an ostomy, but as a “newer” nurse, I am always interested in learning, especially, the patient side of things. I am learning that patients have many tips and tricks to teach us! I’d like to share some of my own tips/ info with you and other followers. There’s underwear with pouches for the bag...lacy and sexy lingerie as well! Many patients are surprised that such lingerie exists and I think it’s super amazing that people with ostomies can still feel sexy. I know I’ve had some pts that are embarrassed and so it’s nice to know companies are becoming open and diverse! Also, I liked your tip on the make up brush idea to dust the stoma powder. Less is more when it comes to stoma powder. It should look like it’s barely there. If you’re using the adhesive wipes, dab it on top of the powder so you’re not wiping it off. It creates a seal over the powder. Lastly, I personally always feel weird applying the bag to the patient because I feel like I pushing on their tummy and possibly hurting them, so I clip the 2 pieces together and then apply it to the base plate. Great video! Thanks :)

I personally dont think or recommend to click the bag together and then putting it on because you can't see exactly where you're going with it. As far as stoma powder, I've found using the spray is a lot easier than using the wipes just because the wipes for me moved the powder around. Lastly, I personally didn't like the lingerie and found it was just another layer of clothing and I felt comfortable during sex without it but I know a lot of patients that really like it

This is the first time I've come across your videos and I've learnt so much from you, thank you. You've given me the confidence to leave the house and my favourite part was your advice about crusting.. I've never heard of the phrase nor the practice but I have always suffered from red itchy sore skin around my stoma not sure if it's because of the wafer or output leakage.. either way I can see how it will protect my delicate skin so for I'd like to thank you. I'd love to see your ideas on dressing, I usually use a waist band to hold everything in place.. thanks and keep up you brilliant work! Love from the UK 🇬🇧 ❤️

After all the recent post op complications I've suffered with my recent laparoscopic right hemicolectomy I'm considering asking my surgeon if he can perform a colostomy or iliostomy when I see him at my two month post op consult in December. I'm so tired of constantly having to run to the bathroom several times a day just to have a mostly liquid bowel movement so I'd rather have the bag instead.

This just popped up in my feed and although it is pretty old I just wanted to say a couple things. I got my stoma after emergency surgery and it was a bit of an adjustment. It was kind of trial and error but as you know it gets easier. I have had every malfunction at least once but after I got it down I rarely have any problems now. I didn't use any deodorizer for a long time but it is really nice and helps the poop slide out better than milking it out. I am about a year and a half post surgery. I am curious about you saying you have had two stomas and I thought you had a resection but it looks like they stole your backdoor so that would make it hard to poop so I guess there must have been an issue with the first one and they had to redo it. Mine sticks out enough to be able to use a ring and a flange. I like the skin prep wipes to put a little film on my skin to help with the seeping around the ring. Anyway take care :)

You busted the bag or the wafer? I get that the nurses have to make sure that we can do things on our own once we get home, but yelling at a patient is NEVER okay! Did you call the department to report her?

I am sorry to say but a “video” is meant to illustrate the actual usage of the products on a particular kind of stoma situation. Words inform but images are by far better to figure out how devices work an how they are used. A picture is better than a thousand words.

Hi! How do you apply the paste to your convex wafer? Wouldn’t it bulge too much with the paste?
@EmilyParrisVideos
@EmilyParrisVideos 5 жыл бұрын
Yes- you do have to be a little bit more careful with a convex wafer. Since the majority of people who have to use convex wafers have the hole to their stoma really close to the skin you want to make sure not to block that or else it'll force the stool to go under the wafer and burn your skin. Just using a little bit in the places you need it most!

Hi, I am a Ostomy nurse and I have UC. I sorry to hear the nurse let you know options. The thing that is hard there are many options and in the hospital there is limited option however, once you are out you can contact the various supplies to try them. Also check with insurance to see what your coverage is and who they work with. This will limit your options as for as what they will pay for. Take care

So very happy to hear from such a positive person. I wish I had tuned in earlier as my Ostomy “experts” did a crappy (pun intended) job of explaining products and usage. I am going to try the non-drainable bag next. Now that I understand the wafer issue and stools not coming out into bag, I feel more comfortable going forward. Thank you very much. PS.... I am 70 years old and still learning. Be safe.

My daughter(26 years old and only married a year) had emergency surgery to get her ileostomy a week ago, had complications after but finally on the mend but has been in the hospital all of March and very depressed. She cannot have ANY visitors because of the Corona virus and totally overwhelmed. I am doing as much research as I can to help her out. I sent her your link here, hopefully she will start watching and learning. I appreciate your positivity!

Hey Stephanie! Great questions! I do have a Jpouch now and I have a video where I describe what that is and the process of getting one. My output at first was super watery and then thickened to more of a mashed potato consistency. In Feb. of 2019 I had my gallbladder removed which made my output very watery again. If you want to see more of my JPouch journey I have lots of videos about that
