Excellent tutorial, Patmos. You are one of the few people I've watched who has figured out there are sufficient supplies in camp (except wood) to build the forestry and all nine houses. Too many people build the smithy and thatchery before necessary and don't get all nine houses in time. One thing I do a bit different is I build the small granary to buy from the townspeople. I then pause and look at the inventory of the first three houses and buy what they have the most of and sell in a market stall to get those new settlers coming in. I love your Ostriv videos, so keep them coming.

Thank you! That is really nice of you! For me it depends on my gameplay if I want to build a granary and buy from the locals or build a farm and start with that. Both ways work well. I never build the small granary though. it is only 1/5 cheaper then the big one, can hold only half of the goods the big one can and has fewer slots. And especially the only 1/5 cheaper makes it worth to build the big one!

Love this, thank you Patmos. A few problems I’ve had early on are that if I expand the size of the farm houses and my workers have to take materials that little bit further, their carts start to wear out before I have any extra workers. So juggling the blacksmith and carter with builders and lumberjacks can be a bit tricky. Also maybe you could make this a series with about 4-6 levels of town size: I sometimes find my people leave because they can’t get clothes or shoes, before I have enough resources to export to pay for them or enough workers to manufacture them. And yes, I have the women exclusively do any job the game allows them to. I used to be able to balance it all when the game was a but simpler, but the welcome additions from the updates has unbalanced it for me and I struggle now. Thanks for all your existing help.

You are most welcome! I'm happy the video helped a bit. I've written down your suggestions! I think a can make a few video's about that. like: What to do after year one? How to reach year 5 with out loosing families (to no clothing/shoes etc). The to do list is quite long though, so no promises on when they will be ready! I will do my best, so thank you for your suggestions!

7:40 It should be noted that after the release of Alpha 5, building charcoal piles near houses will cause the villagers to become sick

True! I put that out somewhat further in the video. This is just to get people started. All buildings can later be destroyed and rebuild somewhere else.. but since so many people contact me with starting struggles, this is an easy way to get started!

If you are concerned about walk distance from lumbermill to houses, maybe moving the second row of houses up in priority might save time.
@PatmosIV
@PatmosIV 11 ай бұрын
That is an option! Houses can also be placed more strategically to save more travel time, but in the end its very well possible to get all the houses and some industries up in time, even with a bit of extra travel time.

Hi Patmos, Once you've presented your starting sequence, would you be willing to demonstrate my suggested opening? I put the farm in right after forestry and clay pit, so the ladies get some crops in during the first season. I plant Sunflower, Buckwheat, and Potato, in that order. That's the priority for yields with the object of getting the oil workshop right after the smithy/carpenter. A Thatchery will be needed before the 9 houses in this build order. Then of course the Smithy and carpenter after the houses. Put in a market and more houses and you can be up to 10-12 families by the end of the first winter. Build the town hall, granary, and tradepost along with more houses and you'll be in position to make money on oil and charcoal, and growing your town.

Well I will have to write this one down. But these vids will now mainly serve those who still really struggle, so I’m keeping it as simple as possible for everyone. And although I think building the farm early is a good option. I would just go for food in it, cause money is never an issue so I don’t need the sunflowers for oil and exportmoney. But I will see what I can do! Have a very long to do list haha, so will put this on it too! Thank you for the suggestion anyways!

So you even buid the farm before the houses? How on earth can you get all nine done in time? I don't know what am I missing but I'm quickly losing my patience with this game
@PatmosIV
@PatmosIV 11 ай бұрын
Well i guess the most important things are: 1. pause the game until you have a build que set up. 2. Get all men building, once the forester is up, put 2-4 man in, and as soon as you have enough logs, put in only two. 3. Build the houses close enough so walking distance is short. 4. Never run the game on speed 3!

@@PatmosIV umm the only thing I didn't do was NOT running the game on speed 3...does it affect the play?
@PatmosIV
@PatmosIV 11 ай бұрын
Yes it does. A lot of computers can’t handle it, its a bug in the game. It comes down to: when you play speed 2: they take 3/4 of a month to build a house, when you try the same on speed 3 it may take then a full month. The game speed in terms of time seems to go faster then the actual speed of gameplay on speed 3. So trying the whole first year only on speed 1 and 2 might fix a lot of problems!

Great videos as always, Patmos. First, I found that turning on overlays of buildings works very well so I can see what buildings I've placed. This is in the in-game menu, Info Overlays -> Always Show Occupied Space. Second, is there an easy way to determine total food produced or in storage so I know whether I should plant more fields on not? Third, consider adding short tutorials on the production or manufacturing chain and your experience placing buildings. For example, I need to produce leather so I need to build X, Y, and Z buildings and when should I start building these buildings? (My town asked for shoes but I can't make them until I placed a string of other buildings.)
@PatmosIV
@PatmosIV 10 ай бұрын
Thank you so much! Really nice! I know the overlay button, thank you! I know about the overlay! Thanks for reminding me! There are statistics if you open the economics screen (click on the money Icon on the top) then go to stats and you can see what you are producing. Let me know if you found it! You can also turn the numbers into graphs, and then see wether they are going still up or level or down, that should give a good indication! Thanks for the tip on the shorter tutorials. I have been thinking about it. But thought there would be no need for it. But I can sure make a couple of those! Thanks for the great tip! Ps. If you want shoes fast, build the shoemaker and import leather. You get shoes fast to keep people from leaving. Then work on getting a Cowshed, saltworks, and create bark in the forester. Import lime (limestone production chain you can do later) and build a tannery. Then you can turn cowhides into leather and make your own shoes!

@@PatmosIV I know about the economics screen but the problem is I have to ADD up the total food (or do I?) so I know to grow or get 100 food per person and the 5 major food groups too. I think. And I know about viewing the graphs but it's per item, not total each group, like food. I know it's early game development and it might not be included YET. :) And thanks for the tip on importing leather, making shoes, then eventually make leather and shoes on my own. I just made a game and people started leaving because I wasn't supplying shoes. Last time it was water = 1 water well per 9 houses, I think AND make a wells for citizens and another for production. By the way I enjoyed your test town - I created my own similar to that one.
@PatmosIV
@PatmosIV 10 ай бұрын
True, you still have to add it up. But it also depends a bit on your food supply. For most of my towns I mainly use buckwheat and potatoes as their main food source. Almost all households will buy these then. So if I keep an eye on the production and use of these two, I can quickly see what the town needs. If I see the stock drop, or that production and sold items start to match up, I need to make more food. You don't have to calculate all your foods, just pick your main ones and keep an eye on them. Concerning the wells. I use 1 well per 6 houses, and build it near their houses.. That makes sure I never run out of water close to their houses. Production buildings get their own well/platform. One well can supply multiple production buildings of course. I hope this helps a bit! And enjoy an amazing game still in development! So some of the nice graphs etc might come in at some point!

Have just been watching someone else's game, and apparently, there is a bug that makes the building slower if on speed 3. Some computers can't handle the speed so it causes a time lag. I would advise people to stick to speed 2.

I recently bought this game and there's no way I can get the first 9 houses built in time. I build them close to both the forestry, clay pit and camp. I place no more than 2 workers in the forestry (but it didn't work when I put 3-4 to then remove 2 either) and possibly leave just one when I have enough wood. They barely build one fuckin house per month and I get to december 1 or most likely 2 houses short. The best I got was building houses without gardens in my first game but still I got 1 house short (and people left cause no food variety). It's damn frustrating and silly too, because there's no visible reason for that.

Really sorry to hear that. Which map did you play on? I recorded this yesterday. Sorry I can’t exactly see what you are doing and where it goes wrong. Wish I could help you with that. Maybe do a build along with this video? Same map and pausing at the same time etc? If I can do it, you should be able to do it too! There is no magic in it.. hope you can get it done! If you tell me the map you play on, I will try to make a starting video for that map too!

@@PatmosIV The first map, for no specific reason other than being the first 😂 But I basically did the same things showed, I even put benches in front of every house after watching this vid. Nothing changed they can't fuckin speed up. Also the map has a very nice spot, large flat plateau next to the woods and no red dots for clay (also the map has unlimited clay). I always pause when placing stuff as well as planning where to put it, rotating items ecc on every city builder I play so there's literally zero dead time here
