Really anything that has to do with maximizing some sort of physical capabilities is absolutely affected by genetics at the top level. Unless an abhorrent amount of tests/longitudinal research is done for this game specifically, you'll never be able to measure how much of an effect genes have on players. Kinda like how some people have better VO2 maxes for running which predispose them to excel at long distances more, but even then, it's not an *exact* measurement. Anyone who says genetics don't have an effect on really any rhythm game otherwise have either never done a sport in their life, or have never followed or studied sports that often. Honestly, there's really no point in speculating imo. The "proper" research will never be done, and even if it is, it will most likely just lead to the conclusion that most of us have had in the first place, and that it plays a role to some degree since muscle memory, muscle development, and hand-eye coordination are all fundamental things that can be affected by genetics, but it's not an end-all, be-all type of thing since rhythm games practices and skill progression curves are still continuing to develop today. Just train harder, train smarter, and get gud.

Do genetics matter? Short answer: yes Long answer: While genetics may matter in improving, if you keep a good mindset and keep playing, results will definitely show. If you tell yourself that you can't improve because of bad genetics, that is when you really will not improve.

Another thing that people don't seem to talk as much is about how much your health matter when it comes to improving and learning when it comes to anything really. Your brain and your muscles require not only training to develop but also nutrients and rest, having a sufficient intake of calcium, potassium and sodium can greatly improve how your neurons perform, sleep as well. Meanwhile your muscles would usually require good sugar (mainly for a short-tem efficiency) and protein (for development and long-term). Other nutrients obviously also help like a bunch of vitamins and other minerals. It's always good to keep in mind your health, your eating habits and your sleep. Also a good training dedicated for specific aspects of osu can help a lot more than just simply "play more" at random (or spamming farm maps and relying more on luck than on actual muscle memory) A good mindset can also help a lot as it keeps your routine going and mood does affect your performance in just about everything (even if minimally) So take care of yourself and love yourself and PlAy MoRe

Great video! Much better than your first one on genetics. I guess the real take away for me is to go at your own pace. I am about rank 18k and I've been playing for 2 years. I know people who improved slower than me and I know many who improved faster. At the end of the day, osu is just a game. I think most football players don't get discouraged because they aren't as good as Ronaldo; they play because football is fun. It is really cool to watch top players dominate, but I think it is just as rewarding to see yourself grow as a player no matter how "slow" your improvement is.

Well from what I see genetics do exist, but idk how, but if you pay attention to top players you'll realize why they are good on playing osu, and from what I know you'll improve faster in osu if you find the map that would make you comfortable to another map, also daily activities and health affects improvement in osu from what I know. Also if you want to know something what I found interesting from top players in osu why they are good in playing on osu is, they drink coffee and coffee have lots of good effects for osu like improving your focus, it'll make you feel more productive ect. As I just mentioned daily activities have an impact on your improvements in osu, also sleep greatly affects your improvement in osu so be sure to take a lot of good sleep if you have time. Amazing video, only thing bothering me was the blanket term "rx makes everything exponentially easier". Yes, RX removes most if not all complexity of songs, changes in rhythm, etc. It also removes any skill involved in difficult long/high bpm streams. What RX doesn't take away is the tracking required for those streams, *most* of the accuracy involved in doing difficult jumps (most 1-2 jumps excluded as they're ridiculously easy to aim half the time), and the reading required to play most of the song properly. You can say it's just a dumbed down version of another, but if you genuinely try pushing your limit with RX, it helps improve aim consistency, and (at least in my experiences) has helped improve my ability to read and aim difficult patterns. I personally don't think I would of improved my aim to where I am today if I didn't take a break from playing "normal" osu, to play RX for ~2 months. Edit: If you look at most 9* maps (good example but not 9* is Go Go Carlito), the rhythm complexity is close to what you would see in a 5* map, except with 8* jumps. So to say being good at the game requires a deep understanding of complex rhythms doesn't make sense, as PP isn't weighted on rhythm complexity (probably should be to some extent IMO).

I started in June 2020, I'm #288k rn. I don't farm though, I might just out of curiosity, but if I'm going to submit a play especially one on a farm map, it has to have at least 95% acc and be an fc. That's my mindset, and tbh, I don't mind if it takes me some time to get to 5 digit, I want to improve and let the pp come to me. Like Nalian said, Skill = PP, PP doesn't = skill.

I can say with confidence that I broke my own barrier in both single tap speed, and stream consistency. I haven't broke the 220bpm stream barrier yet so I can speak of stream speed yet. I NEVER thought i'd be able to single tap above 200 bpm, but even when I was learning to single tap (starting from 175bpm, where I was alt-ing farm maps that were up to 210) I quickly went up to single tapping 200-210 and after getting consistency over the last 3 months was easily able to single tap 220-230. Now that I am back to practicing single tapping I went from 230 absolute max to in some cases 260-270. (mostly because I started reading AR9 +DT better) just from about a week of deliberate practice. Prior to this I was deliberately practicing streaming as well as overall consistency at my comfortable bpm range (170-200 on streams, 170-225 on everything else) which I worked at for about 2 weeks and managed to go from a B rank decent combo pass on ange du blanc pur (5*) to a 97% FC, which probably is the worst of my improvement proofs, but is the only thing in my top 100. To the point where even now where I've been using 240bpm single tapping as a way to train stamina I even got a 2.3k combo on above the winter moonlight (6.39*). that would've been above 98% acc if I hadn't started shaking as much as I did.

The biggest difference I see in osu with deliberate improvement is the fact that a player who does nothing but farm the same difficulty maps will obviously improve their aim, but past that they will probably end up sticking to the same difficulty maps until their rank gain stops them from doing so. If another player were to do nothing but focus on improving their abilities, there would be a larger gap than 20~%

Genetics and talent truly dont matter much, sure they matter a bit but nowhere near as much as people think. The saying goes "Practice doesnt make perfect. Perfect practice makes perfect." The real issue with people not understanding how to improve at osu is that 90% of the people who play it are around the age of 10-20 and have never physically trained any part of their body. There are right and wrong ways to go about practicing, and saying "just play the game" isn't super helpful. If anyone has done research into physical training you'll know there are certain ways to exploit the mind and bodys way of improving. For example: Always warm up. Practice several times a day with the intention of improving certain aspects of your play. TAKE BREAKS sometimes several days at a time the mind still processes information for hours and days after you do something, it even happens while you sleep. And for that exact reason if you can only practice once a day make sure it is before you go to sleep since it will be fresh on your mind and thus will be the first thing your brain works on rewiring itself to do (Im not a physical therapist so im not exactly sure how it works but if you're interested there is TONS of research and science to back this up.) There are tons of ways to improve that have yet to be used in the Osu! community and when people start practicing properly the types of plays you will see will almost certainly be inhuman. Im so excited for it. And I think thats pretty awesome.

I mean, most part of genetics influence how long would you take to become a master. Only a tiny bit of genetics influence your 'human skill ceiling' which is a point that to this day no one has arrived to. So not having genetics only means that to arrive to the skill level of whitecat or any top player, or being better than them, you will take more time and practice than someone with talent (genetics). And that means that you can be as skillful or more skillful than someone with genetics if you practice enough. So good luck on your osu! grind if practicing and improving is what you find fun about playing, and pls enjoy game c:

you forget one thing related to tapping muscle fibers. does this matter? considering the fact that some of these dudes can stream 260 bpm for several minutes ( *cough cough* vaxei) it almost certainly is, for osu! youd need a really good mix of type 2 (fast twitch) muscle fibers which as a strength coach i can tell you is largely genetic, if you tried really REALLY hard you could maybe change 5-ish% of your muscle mass into a type of fast twitch fiber but if you were born to be a marathon runner your osu! skill is capped from day 1

For older players mental elasticity is a huge factor of genetics that affect osu (and many games) some people can have really good genes and will be able to learn the game at a much older age (~20), and some people won’t be able to play if they start after the age of 12 or so
@redeal65814 жыл бұрын
Something people are forgetting is past experience. Some people have already played rhythm games for years before playing osu. Other people are used to playing games that require aim so they are better at Osu when they start. Also I feel like time played is overlooked. Playcount isn't as reliable as hours. Some people are like "got 5 digit in 3 months" and people whine about how they suck because they aren't 5 digit after a year but it's because they have less time played.

My conclusion is that you cannot know how much you have been blessed by genetics until you have taken time to develop the skills affected by the said genetics. That is, before you start blaming your (poor) performance in genetics, first start actually trying to develop them. I feel that deliberate practice is of a lot of importance, whether you have the right genetic composition or not I also have the idea that a lot of us might just not be applying the knowledge that actually leads to improvement, for example, a lot of people doesn't realize that you have to start from the basics (and it's not just 6 digits who do that, in some aspects even higher rank players doesn't realize this). Other things like mindset, how we learn (and we can improve our learning) etc. There's just a lot of untapped potential for people to learn besides their genetics. (I hope this is not hard to understand, sometimes my english comes out weird)

So for me it's not even a matter of lack of practice or anything that I can't reach the top... it's a matter of health.
@bensonspov4 жыл бұрын
Does genetics matter? Yes But I personally believe if you play enough practice properly and rest properly you can improve too. In my opinion all genetics does is speed up the process. A person with "bad" genetics might take 1 year to get to a certain point where as someone with good may do it in half. If there is a "maximum" to skill eventually everyones going to reach it. The only difference is how fast that will happen.

I was recently diagonsed with ALS, and it's really starting to affect my left hand. Does anyone have alternative styles for tapping? If not, I guess I'll have to play only reading-based maps haha. Good video though! I don't believe in excuses :D keep practicing (to anyone reading this)

my personal oppinioe is that genetics are nothing compared to the devotion of a player who puts all of himself to improve, for me a player who becomes top player after many sacrifices and devotion will remain more and more impressive than a player who is boosted by genetics , in the end, genetics are just a small boost that can be surpassed by anyone with the right commitment

genetics don’t decide if you can actually improve though imo, doesn’t matter if you can stream 170 instantly or can aim 6* jumps instantly if all you do is play stuff way outside your skill range or only play the same maps without anything outside your comfort zone
@hessien694 жыл бұрын
i think genetics are a good part of osu because for example your clicking speed can differ between you and somebody else so i who have been playing the game for a year can only stream 175 bpm for example lmao

All I gotta say is: If you get into a video game with the goal of becoming one of the best instead of simple pleasure or enjoyment, you're just setting yourself up to be dissapointed. It may be depressing to think about but when it comes to sports, games, and almost any skill, there are only a limited amount of positions in the world class tier. So instead of worrying about things that are beyond your control, just try and be the best that you personally can be. TL:DR plz enjoy game :)

I believe that genetics only plays a large factor when you get very good at something. The better and better you get at something the slower you will improve, the first 100 hours you put into osu will see you improving much more than the 100 hours after. The slight advantages that genetics can give you will only really become apparent when you are at the top and close to "mastering" the game. The case where people blame genetics on why they are not improving is completely flawed and I believe that if everyone tried to deliberately improve and practice osu, anyone could hit at the VERY least 4 digit.
