I once modded a map of a guy who did his first map ever. I told straight where he need to improove and what he did wrong, how he can do better, etc. Somehow he was really upset and angry after this mod because in his opinion his map was very well done. He said things like: "I played mania for many years and (standart) mapping is so easy because of my mania skills, so this map is very good and i want it to be ranked" Even tho he may hate me now I think I still did the right thing. Why tell a new mapper just basic fixes and leave him in his thoughts he can rank the map. Would be a waste of time for him without progression.

I think that guy needs to be less egotistical and make better new mapper decisions, I always accept criticism and I think he should do too, thinking that mania skills = good standard mapping skills is a bad mindset to have because the most you can get from that is decent rhythm, however there are much more to making a good map.

I am usually on the other side, I am anxious about telling people that their maps are just bad. It's usually down to fundamental issues that I can't isolate. I usually just tell them "I can't see anyone ranking this." because every part is just bad. They have a 1/2 rhythm built in but it's littered with overlaps and patterns that are inconsistent or unreadable. When they are faced with the tiniest shred of criticism they revert to the "It's my style." and refuse to improve.

My biggest problem is finding anyone to look at a map in the first place. As someone who has tried to start mapping multiple times, I almost never get any real feedback. Of course, anything I'm making isn't going to come close to being ranked as someone without a lot of experience, but without feedback I can't move toward that point in the first place. Getting good mods is pretty difficult as someone without any name recognition mapping-wise. So yeah, the whole "honest feedback is good" thing requires feedback in the first place. (But of course, your video does point out a lot of good things, just a thought about getting into mapping in the first place)

And in that video he basically says "It's fucking difficult for new mappers". Even when my mapper friends who know how to map and have ranked maps look at my maps they don't usually give very good feedback. It really is just kind of difficult.

I really relate to the point about your style changing because of a single thing. I was in no way as good as you when i got torn apart, but i decided to ask some of the people who destroyed my map and they said i lacked any sort of structure whatsoever (i even asked neliel to play one of my even earlier maps, and he had the same opinion). They proceeded to use monstrata as an example for structured mapping, and needless to say i worshipped him as a god from that point on and my style developed into a weird ass compulsion to adjust spacing by .5 every time the pitch shifts up or down in a song.

people are afraid to be honest because they fear they might hurt the other person or their image. everybody should get shit on equaliy, pishi's videos are good and helpful but his mapping-decision in his maps are lacking some massive fucking balls. you can overcomplicate things, and i think pishi does that with some of the concepts he made videos about
