@fuzzydunlop7928
@fuzzydunlop7928 4 жыл бұрын
The popularity was a double-edged sword - the drive to out-perform the competition led to climate of one-upmanship that made the business shoot through 30 years of progression in about five. It'd all been done. A candle burning bright, and lasting half as long. They killed the town, except the town was the entire industry. The thing that'll save the industry - not bring it to a level of renown like prior but at least sustain it and keep it healthy - is the internet. The ability to sustain a niche thing through hardcore support from informed and passionate fans is possible in ways today that it wasn't before for products like ECW. Fans, as much as disgruntled wrestlers, created AEW. Almost as if it's been willed into existence. I'm not a big fan of it myself, but I think it - and increasingly the stuff they're doing with the NWA - as well as the increasing market for NJPW here in the states - will make the business SUSTAINABLE. Which is always how it's best - not massively popular - but a business where a normal bloke can put in the hours and make a living. To me that's a beautiful thing. Just need the WWE to keep shooting themselves in the foot and botching their plot to put an NXT in every Starbucks the world over. They haven't let me down yet, so here's hoping.

@@SammyCSectionAs popular as AEW is with today's wrestling crowd, it wishes it was half as popular as wrestling was during the Monday Night Wars. That's not a knock on AEW, that's just how white-hot the industry was then. Think of how much attention & hype WWE gets for WrestleMania each year.... now triple it & imagine that year-round. That was the wrestling business in the late 90's.

Looking back this was one of the darkest days in wrestling. There was no longer a mainstream alternative to the WWF/E and McMahon became lazy and complacent with his assured monopoly, and wrestling has suffered ever since. Sure WCW was a mess by the end but they were a different brand with a different style and a different fanbase which kept some diversity in mainstream wrestling. Without them it was WWE or nothing, and many chose nothing.

Yeah it really broke my heart when this happened, of course I was only maybe 9 or 10, depending on the day since my bday is October And I feel this was before then in the year, so I was 9 lol and it brine my heart to know that my favorite wrestling company was going to be no more after this show. Like I live in Mississippi and tho I did get and watch WWF at the time, I was always into WCW more, which I didn’t even watch WWF until my grandpa ordered and recorded the 1997 Royal Rumble for me and let me watch it when I come back to their house and I got to see what them became my favorite Rumble of all time tbh. Like the whole show was amazing from start to finish, but the whole Rumble and how they put Stone Cold over so hard and they way they got him to win by “being eliminated” the refs missing it and he gets in and takes out taker and Vader I think and then eliminates Bret to win, it was amazing tbh, amd Rock was still the fresh baby face, but he actually had a significant run to the end as well lol. This is when they both were starting to get really big. Then the Main Event in HBK’s hometown against Psycho Sid, it was a great match too Imo. If you ever get the chance you should check it out lol. But yeah, sorry about all that randomness, but yeah it made me so sad that I was losing what was my favorite wrestling show, tho I had started watching more and more WWF, WCW was still my favorite almost all the way to the end, though the angles were pretty rough most of the time, but that’s Russo for u lol. But at the same time I was actually really excited cause I thought maybe since they bought it they would still run it as a “competitor” to their own show and would let it run on the same channel, or find a new home for it since I doubt Turner wanted to work with Vince lol. But yeah, or I thought they would do what they ended up doing, but like everyone else I thought it would’ve ended up being sooooo much better and on a bigger scale as far as the talent they signed and brought in. Like I immediately expected them to buy at least a good main few of them out of their contracts to where they’d have more notable faces and stars to not hsbe to pull their own stars over, but we all saw how that went. If you ever wanna see a really cool video about The Invasion, you should look up Adam Blampied How I’d Book The Invasion Part 1 and 2, and also check out some of the other Fantasy Booking videos he has, cute man hearing the concepts he comes up with in these videos and thinking back to like this is how WWE should have done it knowing they deff could if they wanted to, makes you wonder what could have happened had they did the booking the way he put it. But Yeah, deff check those out, though they’re old af lol. Also there’s the 2 new guys out I started watching who do wrestling content mom thr wrestling channel they just started a month ago and other wrestling stuff they do on their company’s main channel, the company main is called Lumberlend, but their strictly wrestling content channel is called Mustache Bros Wrestling, and you should check them out too. They just started doing videos like I think maybe a year ago, but they’re actually really entertaining Imo anyway. And all of the other content on the main channel is pretty legit as well tbh. They do a lot of pike Wrestling quizzes and stuff, but they’re not like the super easy ones most do lol.

I've grown to believe that Vince winning ultimately led to Vince's ego overinflating, giving us the whole Vince-is-power-mad era from 2001 until 2022. He felt like he was proven right in being the "winner", when really what happened is WWE just didn't *lose.* WCW killed itself, but Vince's ego would never let him realize that. And so, he just grew into more and more of a control freak, leading to WWE disrespecting its fans repeatedly over the years and alienating viewers old *and* new. Only once he was forced out did WWE finally start respecting the fans and their time, and that was only because Triple H gained wisdom in his middle age that Vince didn't have. And even then, Vince's ego wouldn't allow him to go quietly and not try to exert his will. Because he won, he was right, and he's always right. Like a certain bad-haired buddy of Vince's, any evidence that Vince has gone mad is false to him, no matter how true it is to everyone else.

@@Turnheadcough At the height of the Monday Night Wars around 10million people across America tuned in to either RAW or Nitro - each getting over 4million veiwers regularly - today AEW think they've had a great show it gets over 1million viewers and last year the WWE struggle to attract an average audience of over 1.8million - for the whole of 2022 RAW only got more than 2million viewers 4 times. It is undeniable that viewership of wrestling has declined massively since the boom days of the Attitude era. The WWE is still a hugely viable company that makes a massive profit, but it's audience has more than halved over the last 20 years as millions of people have stopped watching.

The biggest problem that the invasion angle faced was the guaranteed contracts that WCW had offered the top stars. Because they were tied to Time Warner and not WCW, headliners like Hall, Nash, Hogan, Sting, Flair, and Goldberg were able to collect a paycheck for sitting at home with their only commitment to show up for any wrestling program that Time Warner put on the air. WCW offered to buy them out of their contracts but only for 50% of any remaining amount due. Only Flair took them up on the offer (with Vince paying the remainder) so that he could pay off his alimony. Everyone else just sat out the remaining year or two of their contracts.

According to Vampiro himself, they called him up and told him they weren't interested in ever aquiring his services and not to bother looking for a job. They made a preemptive strike because of how bad his backstage reputation was. I myself really liked Vampiro and it was obvious he had a bright future in the business throughout 2000 and was destined for bigger things. It's a real shame how that worked out. WCW also appeared to have some real future stars in Shane Helms, Sean O'Haire, Chuck Palumbo, Mark Jindrak among others and looked to be really reviving the cruiserweight division which had WCW gone on would've included the likes of AJ Styles, Christopher Daniels and other future TNA X-Division talent. They were gradually turning things around and things were actually looking up again for WCW and then it all just ended abruptly. Bischoff seemed to have some great plans for a WCW revival but sadly we'll never know how that could've turned out. WWE squandered pretty much all of the bright young future WCW stars besides Booker T and Shane "Hurricane" Helms. Within a year of this angle WCW was already an afterthought. DDP, The nWo, Steiner, Goldberg and years later, Sting when they finally did come to WWE were all horribly wasted and misused. The wrestling business isn't some TV sitcom that has it's run and then comes to an end. It's a cyclical business that ebbs and flows. WCW may well have stayed down for a while longer but it inevitably would've picked back up again. The ratings by the final show weren't exactly in the toilet, they just weren't at the dizzying heights they used to be. It was just a short-sighted decision from some suit that didn't want to be associated with wrastlin'. At the end of the day Jamie Kellner - 64 million dollars vs 200+ BILLION dollars. Fuck you!

@@Bubba__Sawyer The business ebbs and flows, but the late 80's to the early 2000's were NOT normal for the industry by any measure. The territories were stable as a landscape - a way of doing things. You could make a living like that - more niches for more people - localized, but not vacuums unto themselves. Then network television and the need to feed the promotional monster helped to change everything. Since that time it's been all ebb, little flow. The booms get shorter in duration and everything seems bust - so pretty acclimatized to this world of ours.

One thing Vince never EVER got was it was competition that made wrestling great. When there are two promotions duking it out for supremacy that's when you pull out all stops, outwit and outsell your competition at all costs. The product is exciting and fans tune in. Now that the war is over, theres really only one big game in town. Everyone knows that it's no fun to run a race when there's nobody behind you attempting to catch up. Vince believes that "competing with yourself" is still "competition", but many fans disagree.
@PatkaBoy831

You know what is funny?.. in 1995 Vince voiced his displeasure in a meeting about WCW trying to kill WWF and, believe it or not, Vince himself said that a wrestling business without competition would be bad for business. So he knew. He fucking knew. Something I always found haunting was that a guy on an internet forum back in 2001 said that wrestling would be in the toilet after WCW and ECW went out of business. People knew and could see it coming.. and yet it happened anyway. Unbelievable. Jamie Kellner deserves a lot of shit too for canning wrestling.

I believe that Vince knew competing with WCW made the WWE put out better content. Vince just really didn’t care, he knew he was about to monopolize the wrestling industry and fans would have no choice really. Then tna blew up but still only drew around a million or so at their peak.

I finished a rewatch of WCW 2000 and 2001. Sean O'Haire is a standout from the get go. He and Jindrak were fantastic. I loved the Natural Born Thrillers.. but the booking is all over. I don't think the Devil's Advocate would have worked past vignettes. How do you go about booking that for week to week television? He also couldn't cut a promo without getting lost and laughing at times. Shame. He was a ridiculously talented wrestler.
@TeemoQuinton
@TeemoQuinton 4 жыл бұрын
Necropost - Very easily one can book a Devils Advocate gimmick. Push the opponents into a different situation, a move they don't often do. a mat-based wrestler going to the top to get countered in amazing fashion ,a high-flyer having to go low and slow to get out-worked and out-moved... For promos? It'd get old if it's the only aspect to the character, it should have been given the time to evolve. A "Flipper" character like the Devils Advocate would be, a good intermediary mid-carder for flipping other wrestlers from face-to-heel [or vice-versa] is something very much always in need, if you can evolve that basic premise to a main-event level character for when you want to shuffle the mid and upper card? Even better. Want a great example of a flipper main-eventer? Bray and the Fiend.

What do you expect from TV and buissness people? For them if a writing team isn't turning a show around, you hire a new set in this case bringing back Bischoff and Russo as Bischoff did well for 83 weeks and they probably thought he could keep Russo in line because Russo works better with a filter and a short leash. But yes it was a really stupid decision but who said that TV executives and suits in large billion dollar conglomerates are smart? The majority of them are actually pretty stupid

I'd hazard a guess that Vince McMahon hates the majority of WW(f)E fans but loves their money and the pro wrestling business as a whole. That's a strange dichotomy considering he's probably the biggest pro wrestling fan of all time himself but he's managed to keep his business going and stay profitable for the majority of it's run. His whole family were born into the business or have been around it so long that they're as passionate too.
