When it comes down to it, Merlin actually is a parent to Artoria. He raised her, trained and mentored her, and groomed her to be the adult that she became. And when he realized that he had mistakes in how he raised her, he thought and reflected on it constantly, and saw her fall as his own failure. He sees his imprisonment in Avalon as punishment for what he did to Artoria, and owns up to that sin. Incubi only express the emotions that they have absorbed from people. Merlin explains that himself. But there had to have been points where he did absorb feelings of love from people -and when he did, he unconsciously directed those feelings toward Artoria. He loved her like his own child, and always cared about her.

Hmm I don't think Merlin ever felt things like regret or owning up to his "mistakes". As stated, he's a demi-incubus, and their race don't feel sympathy towards humans. At best his feelings of "love" towards Artoria should be like ours towards pets. His love is only as far as "oh that's cute, I wonder how much it can grow" and his attitude towards Artoria's downfall should be closer to "mehhh my bad, okay I shouldn't feed that kind of thing to human again". To give you proof, Merlin, throughout the entirety of FGO's first arc, never ever ever stuck his neck out. Not even once. Since he's trapped in the dang tower, he's at best a tangible illusion. You might argue that he doesn't stick his neck out because he CAN'T. But his actions definitely can't vouch for his "love" either. I assure you, had he been free in the first place, he'll never interfere to a degree where his well being is endangered. Self sacrifice for human just isn't in the nature of an incubus.

Then, when things went awry in E Pluribus Unum, he used his power to project a phantom of himself to save Ritsuka from Cu Alter. He didn't want to directly interfere because he sees this fight against humanity itself to be one which should be won by humanity. Being that he isn't human, he feels that he doesn't deserve to be getting any recognition for this. *"...Afterwards, he went to the utopia of Avalon, and sealed himself within the tower there. Unable to die, he is destined to watch over the world of man until the end of time. As if this were the lot of a foolish man who playfully interfered with the fate of a young girl."* This is what is said about him in one of his Profile panels. He may not be the cleanest of consciences, but he knows what it is he did wrong, and he at least bears his burdens properly.

@@Evilman_520 Well if you haven't noticed, NONE of those actions pose a risk to Merlin himself. He's not benevolent, man. That's like pegging an Agent of the Counter Force as good (which they aren't. Emiya can testify to that). Even if their goal coincides with humanity's goal, at the end of the day they're doing their own thing. Also, I thought Merlin got trapped in Avalon trying to run away from Vivian? He definitely didn't wake up one day and decides that he need to punish himself. In the end he might've thought "dang, I'm trapped. Serves me right I guess". But I'd struggle to call that regret.

@@straypaper no risk? The final battle for Uruk, he left the tower and went to the battle as HIMSELF. If he had died out there, he would have died for good -he's only immortal while inside the tower. He risked his life in that final battle, because he had to, in order for Ritsuka to succeed. regret isnt a starting emotion. It starts as awareness. He became aware of the mistakes that he made while raising and mentoring Artoria. The only reason that he didn't do anything at that time was because the die had already been cast -he couldn't just undo those lessons and re-teach her. But he acknowledged that he made mistakes in raising her. And afterward, he constantly reflected on the events he set in motion. He may have been stuck inside that tower, but that doesn't mean he can't get himself out. He has proven multiple times that he knows how to bypass rules whenever he feels like it. He bypassed the inter-dimensional boundary between the real world and Avalon, to send messages to Roman. He self-manifested in E Pluribus Unum. He left the tower to retrieve Bedivere. He bypassed Vivian's magic by transforming Excalibur into Airgetlam. He bypassed the Throne of Heroes to manifest as a Heroic Spirit in Babylonia, and then later bypassed the curse keeping him locked within Avalon in order to self-manifest for the Battle of Uruk. And let's not forget one critical point: the fact we can summon him as a servant. He still isn't dead yet. He shouldn't be capable of being a servant. But he basically hacked the Throne of Heroes. "Well, I existed as a Heroic Spirit in this singularity. Therefore, I exist as a heroic spirit now. Therefore I can be summoned." The guy can defy reality on a whim.

@@Evilman_520 First of all, he doesn't participate directly in the final battle of Uruk. That's just a projection of himself, he's still living inside the tower even now. It was implied somewhere that his summoning as a servant is facilitated by Merlin himself because "it's a hobby". Second, with Merlin's hobby in equation, it should be obvious that he doesn't stick his neck out. While yes, I agree that he does feel somewhat of a guilt that made him resurrect Bedi and give him the Airgetlam, it's not the same as the guilt we feel when we utterly ruin the life of a fellow human.

I am so glad I summoned Merlin in FGO, and recently reunited him with Artoria. Then only things I wish to see are interludes were he and Artoria get some time together, whether its the Lily version or the final version, as well as one were he reflects on Romani and what happened after the Solomon singularity, like they did with Leonardo's earlier in the year. While he claims he isn't human, I think his character is among the most humane, having a real sense of kindness that few other heroes can possess.

Because who cares about having class advantage in challenge quests when you've got infinite survivability and 100% crits every turn (though it did take like 90 something turns lol). Waver and Tamamo both out perform Merlin on Arts teams... Waver's probably the best servant in FGO, simply because of how universally useful he is. Whilst Merlin and Skadi may outshine him in specific comps (buster Crit and quick respectively), Waver's still the best overall imo

One tidbit from actual Arthurian legend I thought was interesting is that Merlin was actually Hell's attempt at creating the Antichrist and kickstarting the apocalypse. His human mother found out was going on though and had him immediately baptized upon birth, purifying him and undoing that whole destiny. Dunno how much of that concept the Fate version kept in, but it makes me wonder here what connection the ol' wizard has to the Beasts (given their habit of starting similar humanity-ending apocalypses), and if they were involved, what plans they may have had in mind for him before the evil in him was neutralized.

Some info lacks support. In Nasuverse, Merlin can only predict the present state as what Romani foretold. He can tell prophecies from the future with the aid of elements or magecraft but he is incapable of seeing the future through dreams. It wasnt even his gift. Only few mages have that gift and that applies to Romani and Morgan Le Fay. On the part of his feelings for Arthur, its more of a fatherly- brotherly- sisterly or much of a family oriented feeling rather than love for her. Merlin and Arthur heavily appreciates and is loyal to each other that their feelings is somewhat "unconditional" but never to think of a love that spurts to like of a couple love. We could take MerThur as a form of a "crush" with respect but never to an extent that they will fell hard to each other. As to Merlin, he finds his first love to the lady of the lake. And his wish for Arthur for true love came true with Emiya on the final true end of FSN in the Garden of Avalon in Realta Nua.

Merlin being portrayed as a playboy is quite an interesting concept. I have heard that there were interpretations of him having demonic origins, so him being the son of an incubus is quite clever.

That's in the original legends. Merlin was fathered on a nun by an incubus in order to be the Antichrist, but was baptized quickly. This purged him of evil, but left him with the magical power of his father.

He did indeed try to woo Morgan le Fay (he even defended her from Arthur) and his being sealed away for eternity by Vivian as a punishment is also part of the legends. Heck, some versions flat out state that Vivian killed him. The only thing Fate never added, I think, was the whole part where Vivian becomes Arthur's new Court Wizard after Merlin is sealed.

That's all parts of the many changes. Sometimes they are two, with Vivian being the one who helped Arthur and was later beheaded, Nimue then taking the mantle of Lady of the Lake afterwards. Heck, some even claim Morgan was the GOOD one and that a third sibling of Arthur was a villanous Lady of the Lake. Honestly Arthurian lore can be quite confusing.

If I had Merly's capabilities I would most likely make the cool weapons I like to be functional and collect them to have my very own arsenal, collect blueprints to make boss monsters to use as living weapons in case of emergencies. Making deals with people with strong wills and to grant a means to fulfill a wish of theirs or guide them to a more positive outcome, also giving certain heroes and anti-heroes a second chance to live freely as THEY choose in exchange for giving up the power they held when they were alive. Also observing humanity do their own thing to see what kind of future they would make.

I really doubt he knew how to. Based on what we hear, ever since as a child, Merlin was always foreign to humans. It's like, when you see two dogs interact with each other. But the thing is, I don't think he does. For Merlin, I doubt he needs that much selfish desires or happiness to live on. It's hard for me to say it. At first he appears as Memelin who's all like pampered and high-classed and all the sort. Mood? Constantly horny. Take away his easygoing attitude. Strip it all. We know him from Babylonia. We know him as Memelin. We know him from his voice lines. King of the Buster Meme. Dick Wizard. But take a look at where he really is. He's in the Garden of Avalon, sitting down in a tower that's probably thirty feet off the ground and another like one hundred up to the top to the balcony. These aren't facts, just estimating. Merlin is literally living simply by watching humanity. Comics make the Garden look kinda fun, but in anime canon cameos, he is either on the grassland or staring out the tower. He only talks about staring out the tower. Merlin doesn't need to eat or sleep. He doesn't even have company. He's just watching humanity, and surviving that way for the past eternity. Do you really think a man like that would understand how Altria would have felt like when she never said anything? Remember that he was younger and more irresponsible at that point, not having an eternity to reflect. Yes, I do agree that he could have done better with Altria. He KNOWS he could have done better. But you can't go back and change time. Even we, the Chaldeans, only fix what was changed. The major flaw on Merlin's thinking is that he refers to humans as a separate race. It's never half-human, right? It's always half-incubus. He can feel to a certain degree, just very rarely. What do you expect from the guy who had no real physical or social contact with others? And honestly, Merlin was just damn irresponsible back then. Like, way too much. He didn't have a limiter on his actions like he does now.

Lol Im not suggesting to go back in time or do something to change the past like arthuria is doing but rather when he was before in avalon. He could have done more, we all agree in this, which is a shame imo. But i guess thats the lesson. I see your point memelin doesnt relate to regular humans. I kinda see in babylonia too that he kinda dont care about the outcomes of human actions/choices as long as it doesnt result in extinction. Maybe thats why he wasnt too concern about camelot. Tbh, if i were half incubus i might be the same but id hoard power and knowledge more like Morrigan in dragon age or Yennifer in Witcher. @@kingcobra2858 Hmm... About Camelot, I do think he did care to a certain degree. Merlin went out of his way to become an advisor to Uther, set him up with Igraine, got them a kid and raised her up. All to drive back the Saxons. I think that even as he may have been treated differently, Merlin did care about Camelot, but not as much as human capacity can to their own homeland. All that time spent with Altria made him grow more attached, and by that time he actually "interfered" with humanity. Their love for each other wasn't romantic per se, but more on father and daughter. At some point, Merlin just knew that Camelot was not going to end well. He did try to avert it, say by making Altria rethink her decision to whether Caliburn or Avalon, but there was nothing he could do. Ans honesly, Merlin was irresponsible. The man tried to interfere with fate, but was powerless against it. I think this is what rooted his belief. In a way of looking at it, he's the demise of Camelot. For making the training of the king seem more like towards perfection that she sacrificed her selfish needs and urges. That Merlin will not interfere with humans. Instead, watch over them as a guardian fairy. He is afraid of sad and painful things. In the voice line, he jokingly called the Master a devil for putting him and Altria together, and that he hadn't sorted out his feelings yet. So I think that yes, Merlin did care about Camelot. But he doesn't want to experience the same thing. If he interferes, the same thing might happen again. And at this point in the modern day era, humanity is not the same. Just like Uruk with CasGil, or Camelot with Altria. Those civilizations had people working their own tasks to better the kingdom? The modern day era? Not so much. What good would an inhuman, arguably old-fashioned man do? Chaldea puts Merlin to good use, but others? I don't see a spot for him. Honestly... that reminds me of something. Your statement about incubus, I mean. First of all, Merlin's proven himself to be very knowledgeable. Not only being alive for an eternity, but knowing the information during the Age of Gods such as Tiamat, the Beasts, the Grands, etc. Not only that, but Merlin was feared as the most formidable mage in the Camelot era, hence Grand Caster candidate. Let's not forget he was a Beast candidate, but chose not to. And honestly, if he finds the solutions to human problems, then they might rely on him. That would be like regression to the former Ages. And it won't go smoothly even with that aside. Besides, you think Memelin is gonna do that heavy thinking? Lol. He only likes humanity and the human psyche. He could care less about anything else.

I don't quite get what you are saying but explaining it better, Artoria wasn't "heartless". She was just selfless. All her emotions were for others. When she smiled it was because someone else was happy, when she talked she spoke of other's happiness. She never felt happy about herself. Bedivere explains it better in the ending of the Fate route and during his flashbacks in Grand Order. Britain's rebellion was never completely a result of Arthur's "stalwart" attitude or her "martydorm" (though that feeling did help Mordred recruit a bunch of traitor's to his side). It was a direct result of the several Round Table Knights breaking down for different reasons. Tristan's curse is what led to his comment on Arthur (a comment he would regret). Mordred was just being manipulated and was just a teenager seeking approval. Gallahad left on his quest with many knights and never returned to Arthur's side. Lancelot and Agravain's gtievances led to the debacle with Guenivere, the death of Gawain's siblings and Gawain's desiring to kill Lancelot. Basically, it wasn't just Arthur, the entire leadership just went to hell in a handbasket.

@@LeonGun8 I never said, and do not think, Artoria was heartless, my point was (And I agree I pointed it out poorly) was that by accepting a fate in which she would die miserably, she took an unnecessary and dangerous risk. Purely based on a feeling she had. Had she not taken the sword her fate would have been in her own hands, I agree given the state of the round table that's not saying too much, but it would have allowed her the chance to hold her own fate. To determine the outcome of her life purely based on her own will, by accepting the fate of horrific death for no other reason than to fulfill what she felt was her purpose in life she put everything in it at risk. For no conceivable reason. There is taking a risk in the exchange for better reward. at the junction to take up the holy blade, Artoria's options were A) take the sword, become king automatically, die horribly and put yourself and everything you cherish at risk. or B) don't get the sword, probably still become king, and don't risk anything more than you already would have living your life as you wish it.

Definitely not the best place to start. It's not exactly a sequel but it is based upon ideas introduced in previous works. The most accessible ways would be to watch Stay Night or Zero. Ive also got tons of Fate/Type Moon overviews in a playlist on my channel page, but they're meant to supplement experiencing the works first hand.
