Other Worlds #1: Rise of Science Fiction & Astrobiology

Life on other worlds: Is it merely a fantasy playground for science fiction writers or does actual science have a say in the matter too? And how far can we even speculate about life elsewhere from a scientific point of view? When and how did mankind even become aware of the existence of other worlds and their potential inhabitants? In other words: What led to the rise of both science fiction and astrobiology?
Speculative science is the central theme of my channel, where I apply mainstream science & humanities to analyse topics as diverse as astrobiology, alternate history and pop culture symbolism. My main focus right now is on alien biosphere evolution, but I will also regularly revisit alternate history, which is the most popular topic on my channel.

I think a hidden explanation is also anthropomorphism for why the aliens have a head, torso 2 arms and 2 legs with a very humanoid figure. Star trek amd dr who are the worst, with star wars, warhammer and mass effect in the middle. The best non scientist work I found was Lovecraft's aliens, when they aren't extradimensional gods. Hal Clement did a good job on them.

You mentioning star wars as an example of science fiction actually made me cringe. Please, it's not sci-fi in any way shape or form. It's a common misconception, but still quite annoying and ultimately avoidable. A better example would be the biblical apocrypha, because that's actually debatable.

@@Phrenotopia I don't know why he decided at all to bring up the biblical apocrypha 😆, but star wars is technically not science fiction in the traditional sense in that it shares more elements with fantasy than sci fi. For this topic in particular however i think it barely matters, because of the outline of narratives that gave birth to science fiction and the inclusion of alien species in star wars, which even if not that scientifical are still fictional exploration, and have been influential on titles more accurately classified as science fiction. On the topic of whether it is or not actually science fiction i guess it boils down to what is science fiction, and for the purpose of this video where science fiction is defined as a genre inspired by new discoveries rather than one inspired in speculative science, star wars definitely is science fiction. Even if it wasn't however i think starchip shouldn't have make such a big deal of it and instead just make a minor correction

​@@sebastiansandoval4861 - Thanks, Sebastian. I just find it hilarious when some know-it-all comes in being all condescending on something like this as if it's hard facts. 🤣 Come on! It's a matter of highly subjective opinion on what genre a certain show or movie series belongs to. I can find many a science fiction element in Star Wars and many a fantasy element in Star Trek. I'm sorry, but I'm not buying it and I highly doubt that someone somewhere has developed some objective metrics to assess this question. Maybe I'll do a video on this someday and give people like this a brain seizure. 😎

I find it ironic that most star wars and warhammer aliens, despite being fantasy in space, end up less unscientific than the 'so science' star trek and dr who. Technobable does to a bumpy nose cosmetic excuse.
