It just seems like living in New York has been on your mind for a number of years so I wonder if it'd be possible to take on a shorter term lease (6 months) just so you can really experience living there. If you find that it's not worth the cost, I think it'd allow you to finally be more decisive about getting a place in LA. And while the healthy lifestyle is better in LA, New York's obesity rate is also still almost the same as California's, mostly because they have a walking culture there vs the driving culture in LA so you get a lot more exercise just in daily life, even if eating out offsets that somewhat.

Obesity rates are state wide not localized. SoCal is way different than NorCal and LA has a fitness culture it's weird, but I get what she's saying. NYC has pizza on the corner and it's amazing, but I went for a week and gained 5lbs because it was so accessible. Some people move to LA and because of the weather they also tend to go out more than NYC and walk more and do more in general even though it's driving culture and winter doesn't keep you inside so I can see the difference. I also love San Diego as well if she knew people in San Diego I would say yes go there it's such a nice time.

yeah I was the most fit I’ve ever been living in NYC just because of how many steps I was getting in every day. I live in a “healthy mountain town” now and am not in as good of shape as I was being in a walkable city.

I just wanted to say: 1. There's no such thing as a wrong decision and 2. Not making a decision is still a decision - you've decided not to take action. My own experience - upending my life from Australia to do the digital nomad thing in 2017 (quit my day job, sold my stuff etc) A few months in (living in Mexico) - I didn't enjoy it as much as I thought I would (it is way way harder to work while travelling for me). Ended up moving back to Australia, my old employer offered me my job back and moved back to where I used to live. It was surprisingly easy to get back to what I had before making the move. At least now, I knew what that other life entailed - I didn't have the regret of what if. Also wanted to say - going to NYC would also be an investment in your channel - pretty sure RPMs would increase and lead to brand deals (plus collabs with other NYC creators) - I watch a ton of NYC vlog content because I love that city but can't live there permanently.

My grandpa used to say that whenever you're making a decision, you're choosing between two sets of problems - and you have to choose which set of problems you'd rather deal with...thinking about it that way has helped me make a lot of hard decisions! Also agree with the comments about moving to NY for a year or giving yourself some kind of time limit to see how you like living there - having a specific time in mind where you give yourself the chance to reflect/reconsider can remove a lot of the angst from decision making :)

Seems like you view LA as home and NYC as a fun stop along the way. If you’re gonna end up in Cali anyway, why not spend a year or two doing the New York thing? If you hate it or it’s too disruptive, you can always leave ❤

I agree. NYC is fun to visit, and I had thought about living there to see what it would be like. Now, I wouldn’t; I would rather live in Paris! Try out both cities or adjacent areas. I really liked staying in Weehawken, NJ across the Hudson River. Take the ferry across and you are right at Hudson Yards. A short bus ride also and much less expensive, and clean. Parking will be a nightmare and expensive is you live in NYC. I like the energy of where I live now, and love the weather! I grew up in PA and it can be miserable in the winter with the snow, rain, dampness and general dreariness, and summers aren’t much better lol. I now live in and love California, one hour south of LA. I wouldn’t want to live in LA proper. You can go for the day, but … You can rent a furnished place in either city in the mid-term rental market. Check out “Furnished Finder” as one option until you find where you want to rent longer term.

It’s so hard cause I’d love to see you in nyc but I think Cali seems like a potential better home base- cheaper, closer to family and friends and better weather year round. You could use the $$ you’d be saving in LA from cost of living and potential travel from nyc to west coast for family to travel more, and even visit NYC or other cities more often. On the flip side, NYC would really push you and you always have the Palm Springs house to stay in when going back to Cali- such a hard choice, I don’t envy you! Wherever you choose we’re all so excited for you!

I used to work in NYC every day and I just can't with the amount of people on the sidewalks. It's definitely so amazing there but that is the dealbreaker for me. I lived in LA and even though there are not-so-great things there (crime, homeless) you have access to every cool thing in the film and music industry. I grew a lemon tree there which was an actual dream. :) And walking through NYC in the rain and freezing snow isn't so fun (unless you are curled up in your apartment)! Good luck on your decision!! Either way you can always move if you are not happy!

On the topic of where to move, there are two things I have reminded myself every time I've had to make this decision: 1. Nothing has to be permanent. Yes, moving is expensive, and a hassle, and very disruptive. And I'm sure you don't want to continue moving every year or two. But it's not permanent if you don't want it to be. If you move somewhere and decide it was the wrong decision, you can change it. In general I think about decisions as "one-way door decisions" and "two-way door decisions." If you go through a one-way door, there's no going back. If you go through a two-way door and realize it was a mistake, you can always turn around. Moving is a two-way door. 2. Every place I've lived has had things I loved about it, and things I didn't like. No place is perfect, but no place is irredeemable either. So if I start getting down on where ever I'm living, or missing some place I used to live, I try to remind myself of that, and think about the good things where I am. This isn't an argument for you to stay in Seattle (I am still glad I moved away from there), but just a reminder that where ever you do end up going, you'll be able to find great stuff and enjoy life, even if there are certain aspects of it that aren't ideal. The idea of the one perfect place to move is a fallacy. Anyway, I don't know if that's helpful. But at a high level I'd say trust your gut, make the decision, commit to it long enough to know if it really is right, but allow yourself to change your mind once you've given it a chance. (Also sorry to make two separate comments, but I was so excited about Mendo that I had to comment on that before I'd even finished the video...)

New York is AMAZING and as someone who's lived there, it can be totally worth it! However, it can also be a lonely city if you don't already have a built in community. As for weather, the time you spent there was in October which was SUPER nice (I was also there during that time). The winter however... is truly winter. It's cold, dark, and it snows. I personally don't mind it, but if you've only lived in Seattle and LA, the winters might be a little shocking with the snow and frigid temps. But... you could end up loving that experience! It's honestly an amazing city, but it can get exhausting. The hustle and bustle is great for a few months but can become energy draining after the novelty has worn off. My stress levels were at their highest in NYC due to trying to stay on top of expenses. However, I also have a career that makes pennies to the dime in comparison. I feel that if you have enough money to live comfortably and not stress about finances all the time, then NYC is incredible! If it's calling to you, GO FOR IT! Try it for a year, and just see! You can always move again. I loved the East Coast for the 10 years I spent there, but coming from the sunshine-y state of Colorado, with lots of nature, great weather (it's sunny even in the winter), and a healthy culture (similar to LA), I missed those aspects a LOT while being in the North East. Not sure if this is helpful. Honestly, just go where your gut is telling you to go. Listen to your own intuition. You will find joy in both places, so don't let FOMO influence your decision too much

Time goes by so fast, and you are very lucky to still have both your parents. You'll be closer to them if you move to LA. I always thought my mom would live longer than she did. The fact that I didn't get to see her often breaks my heart. At the same time you have to do whatever is best for you! Financially LA does seems to be the better option. Looking forward to seeing your future videos wherever it may be. 💖

In my personal experience the older you grow the harder it gets to make friends. So loneliness becomes very real. Going somewhere where you already have a circle of friends and family nearby is great. Personally, I just moved back to my hometown from an almost perfect place (by the beach) because it was really hard to find like-minded people there and I didn't have many friends. I was so lonely and spiraled into depression after a year. So, a support system definitely matters.

About moving. Here’s my two cents. I grew up in a large city in TN but always said I’d make it in NYC. So I went for a 6 month long job assignment and it just wasn’t for me. August-October were great and seeing Christmas there was amazing but I just felt off and not like myself. I felt so much happier in TN (I moved 5 hours from where I originally grew up). But now I don’t have to think about “what if I’d done that”. I moved to NYC, enjoyed my time there, but am thankful to live where I do! I married a good ole country boy and now live in a rural area. But tons of my family is 30ish minutes away and I wouldn’t trade that for anything! To me, family is sooo important and I’m so thankful to see everyone at least once a week.

Hey Shelby - Been watching your content for several years now and wanted to weigh in. I won’t lie, I would selfishly waaay rather watch NY content to compared to LA. NY content generally performs better on KZbin and I imagine living there would have a much higher potential to grow your channel/explore new ways of content creating vs what you’re used to. Finally, what stood out to me is that you felt you would grow more in NY and while you have your whole life to play it safe I think that you won’t regret moving to NY for this chapter and your experience there will stay with you long after you’ve moved on. Just my $.02. I just remember you having this debate a few years ago when it was NY vs Seattle and can’t help feeling that if you don’t go now you’ll always wonder, what if?

Hi Shelby! I live in NYC and I stopped drinking a couple months ago. Money was not the only reason I did it but it was a factor of course. It has been great honestly, everyone is super supportive and I have not felt pressured to drink at all. Also I have been living in NYC for three years now and from my experience the more you live here the more you find a routine that doesn’t involve drinking and eating out. I would highly recommend what some other people where saying try living for 6 months here and see if you can find a routine that doesn’t involve drinking and eating out.

I lived in the east coast for 10 years (6 in NYC) from age 18-28 . Being someone that grew up in LA I can say it’s definitely a place to live in for 1-2 years max if you can afford it. I met so many people, my career accelerated, had a ton a fun, saw a lot of art and shows, and I met my husband there. I knew I could never live there long term because lifestyle is unhealthy compared to LA, it’s very expensive, weather sucks, getting clean air and sunlight daylight is a literal luxury, there is no real nature (I mean real mountains, soft sand beaches, lakes, not just central park). You’ll find NYC is a revolving door as most of my friends who didn’t grow up there only lived there 1-3 years and moved out so it also got very lonely for me. By the 3rd year I was ready to get back to LA but due to circumstances with life I stayed a couple more years with my new spouse. Luckily my husband is also from the west coast and we both saw eye to eye on moving to west coast to settle down. Definitely move there for at least 1 year, otherwise you’ll live your whole life wondering “what if”!! You won’t regret it! Most of my friends lived there for a bit in 20s and now are spread out all over the country. NYC is most fun in 20s, LA is most fun long term for settling down.

This was such a great vlog. You hear a lot of things about Chicago but it actually looks like a really cool city! You and Sam looked so adorable!!! Regarding moving - I'm totally with you on the SC thing lol. Obviously you and Sam know what works best for your relationship and I'm sure when the time comes regarding options you both will be able to come to a decision of where to live etc. I myself have done a big move to a place where I didn't know anyone and it's hard to make friends the older you get. The experience was fun but I always find myself wanting to go home. Especially as my friends meet milestones like getting married and having kids and feeling like you're missing out on these experiences in your friends lives can get tough. I think you know what you want to do, deep down and that's why it's so hard to make the decision because you know you'll have to let go of something you desire. I think the idea of a certain place intrigues you, and because you're adaptable you can make it work. Maybe a little thing you could try is to write down both options toss them into a hat and pick one with the intention of that option being the place you move to. How you feel in that moment may give some insight and help you make the choice :)

I would say move to LA 100%. And then Sam can come visit you, you can visit him or you can travel together. So that cuts down the travel by a third. Whereas if you lived in New York your amount of travel would increase cos you gotta still fly to see Sam and then fly to see your parents and fly to LA to see friends. You will be happier making videos in LA because of the sunlight, so work will be easier, and you could still go get an Airbnb in NY for a month if you wanted.

I think LA gets a lot of negativity online. In LA she's an easy drive to her parents and the weather is good. It has its downsides, but as someone who lives in LA it's okay to like to LA and live in LA. I think some people moved to NYC because they decided LA was over...LA is never over and it is cheaper than NYC so that's a fair comparison especially for someone like Shelby who can always get on a plane and go to the East Coast if she wants and whose job doesn't restrict her traveling like me...aye. I leave the state and login for work and they're like "why are you not in California"

Shelby, here is my recommendation for you. 1) Admit it - You Love LA (cue the Randy Newman song) 2) Move to the west side near the coast. While a place like Manhattan Beach is nice (but overpriced), you can go next door to El Segundo and find something less expensive. I live near Venice / MDR, and if you move a few miles inland there are new buildings with $3000/month rent (or older rent controlled in the $2000 range) 3) The point of living in this area is you have the perfect climate (cool in the morning for jogging), and you’re right off the 405 (and near the airport), so you’re connected to everything . . . In summary, you need to find the “right” part of LA for you.

Shelby, I feel like you've been talking about New York for so long! Could you be bicoastal? Do 6 months in NYC and then do 6 months in LA? Short term leases are a thing. Obviously, the furniture wouldn't be yours but it would be more long-term than a couple of weeks in an airbnb. Also, you'd get to enjoy both coasts as well as be closer to where Sam is as well but then also get to enjoy the proximity to your family for half of the year.

I totally understand not wanting to spend too much on rent, but if you could find somewhere that was affordable for you, I’d honestly probably do NYC for at least a year. You’d be closer to Sam and it’d be a totally new and different experience for you compared to the west coast. LA does have sunny skies even during winter, but think of all the content you could make based on seasonal activities in NY! Lots of fall and winter content/activities. I personally love watching that kinda stuff when it’s that time of year. Just something to consider, sunny skies all the time isn’t always the best thing in terms of content!

It sounds like you want NYC. Maybe just sign a year lease there to get it out of your system or find out you really love it and want to stay. Geez shelby just moved to Woodland Hills in the San Fernando Valley (LA) already 🙄 You have the village, mall, pinstripes just opened. Stan Kroenke (LA Rams owner) just bought huge parcels there that he's going to develop. Based on your previous videos it looks like you were in the noho area or something. You want to make sure you're west of the 405 when looking. Just look for cities along the 101 i.e. sherman oaks. Studio city, Tarzana, encino, woodland hills. Good luck

Wherever you decide to move, just remember this, you can always do what your sister is doing and just live in two different places. Your sister is going to be doing that very thing and I think it's what you should do as well, don't leave Seattle permanently but instead live there 6 months and 1 day a year (so you save on taxes...A LOT) and then live in either LA or NY or wherever you decide 5 months and 30 days a year and then you'll get the best of both worlds. You could even do it to where your in Seattle the same months your sister is and out of Seattle when your sister is, that seems like it would make the most sense to me both financially and logically. Hope this helps.

I lived in NYC for 1.5 years in my mid twenties and really enjoyed it and was actually able to do it on a pretty tight budget. If you’re consistent with your routine and make a plan for food and stuff, you can live a healthy lifestyle. I had a Trader Joe’s along my commute so it was easy to stop for groceries on my way home from work and my neighborhood didn’t have a ton of restaurants, which took away some temptation. and a longer commute for a cheaper place really isn’t that terrible. You can get a lot done on the train compared to driving in LA where you can’t multitask. I think it’s worth giving it a shot, especially since you already know what to expect in LA and if it’s not the right fit, you can change your mind! I was there when I was making the least amount of money & pivoted to move to the mountains and it’s totally doable. I’m glad I tried it 😊

I lived in LA from 2021-2022 in Weho (specific address was 6336 Orange St), and it was an old building but the light was AMAZING. Like best natural lighting I've ever had. And a 2 bed 1 bath was only $2,400 a month. I know you're probably only looking for high rises and whatnot, but the older complexes in LA can be really cheap and still nice if you're open to it!

Why not move to Atlanta? It's geographically in 'the South' but atypical to that part of America in every conceivable way from politics, demographics, culture, commerce etc plus it has the busiest airport on Earth so getting around to pretty much anywhere couldn't be easier. Then there's the mild weather, efficient transit system, walkable neighbourhoods, affordability: you could rent a large house with a garden for the same price as a 2 bed condo in LA (and potentially get your own dog) and proximity to Greenville and Sam. Safety could be an issue but LA comes with a health warning too right? Did I mention that some of the best beaches in America are just a short ride away also being host to some renowned universities and numerous corporate HQs there's a thriving leisure/entertainment scene, plenty of yuppies to network with and a more than decent offering of gourmet eateries and other upmarket lifestyle options. Hope you give it some thought.

Estimate in each city how many times a year you’d travel to see family in CA and then Sam if visa versa. The tally up the potential cost of that and tack that monthly average into rent. That could help you justify the real PRICE of each place beyond rent.

Cool to see you in the Windy City. The lakefront is indeed amazing during the summer when it's not crowded during events. For those who don't mind the winters it's a happy medium between various elements of LA and NYC. Lately the winters in Chicago have been drier here due to climate change. As a former NYer who lived there in my 20's the rent in NYC has become insanely expensive unfortunately and the fast paced lifestyle is exciting and fun but can burn a lot of people out.... Agree LA has a healthier lifestyle in that regard, At the end of the day you know what's best for you.

What's crazy about NYC is how much landlords increased the rent when covid restrictions lifted. One girl on TikTok had her's increase by 2500. Like what? And obviously it wasn't rent controlled, but now we know why people don't leave rent controlled apartments there because damn. I'm in LA and I maybe get an 8-9% increase every other year. Though my landlords old and apparently thinks he can do it every 12 months you can't he has to wait longer than 12 months.

Depends on what the California rent rules are. If you have a rent controlled apt in NY, the laws limit how much the rent can raise each year.Shelby wont be getting a rent contolled apt unless through an act of God himself@@kgal1298 People from the west coast usually arent NY lovers, although I have a friend from Spokane that moved here for his job and wound up loving NY. Shelby, I'm glad you gave us permission to have us suggest what you should do. Personally, I wouldn't think of it as either this or that. In the summer Seattle and the outlying areas as in Port Townsend and Bainbridge Island would be perfect for you. In the Winter you have a place that you can share with someone else in the Los Angeles area so that when it's the Winter you are in the Southern California area. and in the Summer you are in the Greater Seattle area. Take trips to New York as special occasions. I think the apartment you had overlooking the water was perfect. You got plenty of sun and you just seemed more happy. It is hard to navigate your mind when the townhouse gives you worse feeling of your life. Thanks for sharing this incredible video!

It was awesome, super easy to make friends (mostly through work and my roommates, which I realize look different for you), great culture, food, etc but super expensive. I loved it but I do think LA suits you better and makes more sense for you with your family & friends nearby and the cost of living. I also think Greenville makes sense. You would be surprised how much a mid-sized city will grow on you. It’s places like that where you really feel a sense of community, which is a cool thing. My two cents worth!

I may be biased since I live there haha but I say move to LA!! If you have friends already here and you know the area well, it’s not a bad option. Considering you work from home, find a neighborhood you like that’s walkable but still central 😊 and if you ever need a friend to hang out with Shelby, I’m happy to do something. You’re totally right that LA can feel like a lonely place and I definitely feel that sometimes but I think that feeling passes once you have some friends, a routine down, and like your neighborhood. I felt lonely when I first moved here in Jan 2022 and it’s definitely gotten better over time with making new friends and finding some local spots you love so don’t let that get in the way!

In my opinion, I'd pluck for NYC. You've already experienced LA and NY has been on your mind for some time, so I say go for it! Best case scenario - you love it there and it's the best decision you ever made. Worst case scenario you gain some valuable life experience but decide it's ultimately not for you. If that happens, you can eliminate NY from your mind and move on. It's a win, win really when you think about it. Plus you'd be closer to Sam and nearer to Europe for travel. And this is coming from someone currently living in California. I adore it here, but I can see a stint in NYC being an incredible experience - especially for someone young and successful like yourself. Just my 2c worth 😊

You and Sam look amazing together! I love Chicago - It’s such a great city and a quick flight from NYC! In terms of NYC vs. LA (I’ve lived in both and was born in NYC)… NYC has astronomical rents right now. I’ve never seen them jump so high, so fast. I live in a nice, new doorman building and wanted to move somewhere to a bigger, but comparable place and I am seeing rents of $5,500 for a one BR. My former building (close by and managed by the same organization) is renting studios for $3,500-3,600. One of them is a unit I lived in and was paying $2,235 when I left a couple of years ago. I saw one of their 2 BR/2 Baths going for over $8,000! If you live in LA you will have a nice sized apartment and be able to travel to NYC whenever you want. Just my thoughts!

I love NYC but I probably would not have stayed 5 years had I not been able to leave and see my people easily. In fact, after 4 years I started looking at apartments in CT and Westchester and that's when I met my hubby so we stayed in NYC for another year and then moved to CT. I made a lot of friends in NYC but it took time and a lot of them moved out of the city after a year or two. In Fact, I went through 7 roommates in 4 years. I had a nice 3 bedroom/2 bath place. 2 got engaged, 4 moved back home (cost) and 1 got transferred. It was crazy. Go with your gut!

Honestly, I'd suggest even considering living outside the US for some time now that you're young, haven't yet settled down and you're having this predicament. Maybe not long term (or yes if you'd want to and end up liking it), but for a few months could be a really cool experience. Shelby, this vlog is fantastic! What a nice time you and Sam had at the rehearsal dinner! in Chicago! When you and Sam walked by the Michigan Bridge, I thought of London House Restraunt! Their rooftop bar on the 22nd floor is amazing with delicious food. The building has the most beautiful museum downstairs. I love shopping down on State Street, going to Cubs and Bulls games, when I visit. The Lakeshore Dr. Beach is the best and the Cruises. You both had a good tour! Shelby, I've visited family in N.Y. and it is expensive now! About 35-40 years ago, it was cheap! I'm very fond of L.A. and S.D.! I think that your family being here in the L.A. area is a plus. The weather is beautiful and there is so much to do! Friends can come to visit. You can find a nice building with a Doorman and security for $2200.00 to $3500.00 with amenities included. I'm not fond of the South at all! There are too many hurricanes and floods. L.A. has the City and the County. We have 88 cities and over 400 neighborhoods. And plenty of beaches. I hope that you will choose California because your parents and family are here! How is the area where the other KZbinrs are? You do have to always carve out time for you and Sam. It is most likely that long term or where you "settle down" will be on the west coast since your family is there and weather, etc. Now is the time to try something new and you've had this new york fantasy for years. You mentioned that moving to new york scares you: which is why you should try it! Money wise new work is more expensive but.... probably not in a way that significantly impacts someone of your income bracket. You will absolutely grow and challenge yourself in new york and now is the time to do it! Trust me, the older you get, the less you are inclined to take risks or shake up your life.

I bought my house in Missouri in 2008, and one of the stipulations for the loan was that I wouldn't qualify if any of the money I used for my down payment was a gift. I can't relate to having parents, and I know most midwesterners are the same.

I grew up 45 minutes from Chicago. In 7th grade, we had to do a unit on Chicago Architecture and took one of the architecture tours on the river. Looks like you had a fun time exploring the city for a couple days. In terms of moving, since you plan to rent, maybe take a year in NYC. I view it as take the opportunity now since you don't see yourself there long term. You could always go back to LA. When I was about 24 years old, I was laid off from my job, but I was already exploring other opportunities. I moved to Philadelphia never having been there before. It was possible thanks to my boyfriend (now husband) having a steady job and supporting me with my rent. It was a great opportunity for me to explore a new place and find myself. To meet people, I signed up for yoga teacher training because it was something I was interested in. After 2.5 years in Philly, I left that job to travel in Australia and New Zealand. I ended up moving to Binghamton, NY because my husband had family there, but the small town wasn't for me. Last year I got a job in the Philadelphia suburbs and moved back. I was still in touch with friends I made the first time I moved and that has been an amazing connection for me to meet more people since moving back. It's scary to go somewhere without knowing anyone, but my advice would be to find activities where you could meet people, maybe tennis?

So I grew up in LA for a little then lived in CT but on the edge of NY for a while. They’re very different places but ultimately just know you’re not locked in. My family and I moved for 3 years straight just feeling out areas for a year before we settled. I personally find NY better for career growth and more “real” people. However, it is pricey and very busy. The career culture is strong but finding work life balance is a challenge. We work in tech so I wouldn’t say anyone we knew partied or drank often, I think fitness is just finding those of similar interest. Running is huge in NY and they had some great strength gyms but in terms of diet culture it is not as diverse. I like seasons also so I lean more NY with that but if you plan to settle down, NY is not the place. That being said people and community can make or break a place so I think you’ll know what feels right.

Hey Shelby! Love your content and loved this vlog. I’m in a similar situation as you when it comes to deciding where to move and like you, LA is at the fore front for me as well as I also had lived there for about 5 years, lived in different places, then for a year again right before covid. Also, literally in NY as I’m writing this lol It seems to me like the biggest hang up when it comes when it comes to LA is finding friend groups to plug yourself into as to not feel so isolated. Totally understand that feeling and love your transparency! Outside of the sprawling nature LA, it seems to me like that the lack of third places is the cause for a lot of people to feel isolated and lonely. I feel that as adults, we may have to create these third places or at least be intentional and effortful in forming a solid group of people around us. I feel hobbies may be one of those places, but I’d imagine you can potentially may be even start something like a book club and find your people there? Just an idea. Otherwise, if NY offers the friend group thing, then that’s totally understandable to want to move there. I know in terms of events or public transportation, no place can beat NY, so I totally get the draw. Either ways, best of luck to you, and as most have already mentioned, no decision is really wrong in your situation.

The weather is normally great, not to cold in the winter, and not nearly as hot as somewhere like Palm Springs in the summer though it still does maintain a high in the 90s most summer days.
