Sorry for crappy video
Macys has announced to be closing the store in September 2015 so these escalators will be removed and store will be gutted. A retake will be made from floors 1-6 as they are the only floors left with .escalators.

Can't wait to see any other footage you have. Happy you got to see everything. It was a great store and place. Christmas was the best. I never was in it when it changed to Macy's. I think the last time I was there was 2000 or 2001. We moved away in 2002. I saw the story today it closed its doors and for the first time in 100 years, downtown Pittsburgh is without a department store. Made me sad as all those great old stores and buildings are now being changed and closed. If I were a millionaire over and over, I'd keep it a department store with all floors functioning including the basements and of course all elevators and escalators running....especially the woods. I got Barbie dolls from there and Gimbles when I was little lol!

I remember riding the escalators...all of them (even the wooden one) to the 13th floor many times. It was so fun and so cool. Wish there was clear and extended video of it now. If I remember right, there was another set of escalators. That building was awesome and had so much to explore. It was one of my favorite places to go in downtown Pittsburgh. The Gimbles building was awesome too! Lots of escalators to ride and places to explore.

When it was Kaufmann's and originally when it was Macy's, visitors were allowed to go to the very top of the building and the wooden escalators would run at all times. Within the last couple of months, however, the new management put signs near the wooden escalators that say "employees only" and shut them off. It's a shame because so many people enjoyed seeing them. I think I may even write a letter to the management complaining and asking them to continue to run the escalators.

Lucky. The very last escalator (the one that was off) is like from the 20's or even earlier. We got to talk about that last one.

Back when it was Kaufmann's I was riding the westinghouse elevator and some guy that worked there told me about the 13th floor and to check out the escalators so I did and liked it so that is why I made a video. I had seen no signs but it would be a good Idea to write a letter to open up the top floors for tourist and even make a pation for people to sign.

AJN Channel™ funny you mention that last week I was here and I was riding the elevator up to 11 and for some reason it stopped on 9 and opened with all the lights out on that floor I decided to explore it, seems to be used for storage these days, old supplies the dont use anymore and old cash registers. much of the old fixtures are still here. soup of the day sign is still up at the cafe along with pizza menu.

patricknedz they probably did that because they don't want people walking up or down to level 8 or 10 if the elevator randomly stops there

right when you get to the escalator to the 3rd floor you hear something that sounds like some one saying pat a pig watch and listen when you see the sign" to 3rd floor".

Forgot to add that Kaufmans was loaded with merchandise on all those floors. I didn't get to see the building when they converted it to Macy's. We moved away from Pittsburgh. But, since the six floors were only used...looks like I didn't miss anything at that point. Too bad you didn't get to experience it when it was Kaufmans.

+luckystarlyndle I have been here when it was kaufmanns in the early 2000s and all the floors were occupied except for B 12 and 13 never got to see it when it was all loaded up like it was back in the day decades ago

+patricknedz thanks for uploading the videos! I found your other ones and it's so great to see that again. It's a great building isn't it? Just goes on and on. Those wooden escalators are so cool. Just the sound of them is great. I remember turning after getting off the regular escalators and seeing those wooden ones and thinking to myself "these are so old" lol.....riding them and having no clue until I got older how historic and classic they are and were. There wasn't tons of merch on those top floors...I think there was a restaurant at one time. You got the gist of everything if you were there when it was Kaufmans. So cool,you found a guy to let you ride the woods. I hate that building is a real estate project now...it SHOUKD be a 13 floor store forever. It's too great of a place for it not to be. The old Gimbles building is awesome too. Lots of elevators and Escalators to ride and explore in that one was well. Did Macy's use the basement floors?
@patricknedz

They only used basements for storage and stuff now. In the older days they had a Bargain Basement. those escalators are walled off.

@MrDenizen I'm not the one recommending videos, youtube does automatically based on recently watched videos, with similar tags, also some people like the escalators here being that its an old store and people have memories of shopping here years ago, so these videos can be nostalgic to some people. I Don't expect everyone to like this or watch it, but some people do like these kind of videos.

Why would anybody record themselves riding an escalator? And why would they only record looking down i.e. no view? Also, why the fuck are escalator clips suddenly being recommended to me?!?
