Tea For One. The whole band shines on that track. Page can make a guitar seem human . But Bonham's slow groove just makes it spectacular. I've never been able to explain what it is about Bonham's playing that made it unlike anyone else's. It's something like magic.

Mr. Bonham's approach to drumming was so unique and thunderously powerful. Myself and all Drummer's will never forget him. I love every song, but I would have to say that the drum part on the tune No Quarter reveals king John's true genius on the Drum kit. Thanks for the great tribute to the best Rock Drummer ever. Dancing Days always sticks in my mind. Steve Miller had great drummers also and that made me want to play drums. I got to practice with Paul Riesenberg as stand in for pure Prairie League as a shout out to him.

Thank you otis...so many things you said really touched home with me...I over loaded with zeppelin as a teen in the early 80s and stopped spinning them but i never stopped loving them or calling them my favorite and most influenced by....the thing about zeppelin is that everytime I listen to something different from them it becomes my favorite. Every album i bought took me on a new adventure..i have the 10 original albums....In the light,in my time of dying,the rover,tea for one ,since ive been loving you,ten years gone ,I cant quit you baby (their remake on coda album)All my favorite songs..today when I listen to zeppelin its like eating a fudgcicle,its just so delisicious to my ears and it instantly takes me back to places in my teen years....my favorite john thing is on the song remains the same..johns part driving his hotrod to the corner store to get the mail or whatever was brilliant...R.I.P Mr Bonham...

I just still remember where I was listening to the first album for the first time, and being blown away by all of what was going on in that song. Kashmir is a awesome song.I enjoyed all of their albums and songs, but I remember getting their first album when it came out and I was hooked on Led Zeppelin. Songs like Babe I'm Gonna Leave You and You're Time is Gonna Come, then the opener on the 2nd album Whole Lotta Love classic rockin Zeppelin.

I have a lot of favorites but, When The Levee Breaks is my number one. I absolutely love Zeppelin’s spin on Memphis Minnie and Kansas Joe McCoys song but most of all Bonhams drums. Good times bad times, that kick is just too phenomenal. Everything Bonham did was great, really. My buddy, who played the drums and I was on the guitar, did a pretty good version of Rock n Roll. That was our warm up song and it was a real treat when he kind of got it down. Sometimes when you just touch a little bit of something these great players pulled off there's a high that comes with that, I remember my buddy and me being really excited. Looking back it probably wasn't as close as we thought but still, it takes a pretty special musician to touch people in that way. Definitely my favorite rock drummer of all time, I agree with what you said, great feel, space and musicianship. There'll never be another Bonzo!

One of my favorites is 'That's The Way' as I knew the lyrics inside out. One hot summer evening in 2003 Toronto I was outside enjoying a cold beverage when my neighbor (and fellow music lover) flew around the corner, "Dave, Dave, you gotta hear this! I bought a DVD today.Some never before seen Zeppelin. You gotta hear it!" He the day had purchased the 2003 double disc with the red sand and blue sky (you know the one) begging me over to watch the spectacle. Blew my freakin mind! Achilles Last Stand, Immigrant Song in Australia it all put me over the edge and bought a copy the next day, I think it was $30 at the time and worth every penny. Good times and thanks for posting, cheers. Oh yeah, RIP John Bonham, you were the best!

Thanks for sharing. It's too bad nobody tried to get John Bonham help, like you said. Very cool story of your memories as a Led Zeppelin fan. I'm more of a 2nd generation fan. I grew to love them after Bonham's untimely passing. At 15, one radio station played their entire library from A to Z and I was hooked. Great moments from Bonzo include the jazz chops that begin How Many More Times which become sort of African style percussion in the middle, the 3 minute solo on Moby Dick, which was extended live, the intro on Rock And Roll and the rockabilly shuffle introducing D'yer Maker. Bonzo was a family man, as shown in The Song Rains The Same. All 4 have fantasy sequences and his is by far the most fun! RIP, Bonzo, and thanks for the great music! You were one of 4 geniuses in one amazing band!

As a huge fan of the band and the man john bonham, thank you for bringing me out there with you , it was very beautiful and I appreciate the time you took to do it , that is funny about the 10 bucks because some real crappy bands are getting a couple of hundred dollars a ticket now , just two years ago I paid almost 200 to see bob dylan, I wasn't disappointed in the least , small civic center in roanoke va and he was great , well worth it

...I believe it was Little Richards’ Keep a Knockin’ that Bonzo was riffing on - in coming up with the R&R intro. Years back I quite didn’t understand the last hit he did before the instruments come in. I’m thinking “1-2-3-1!” Wrong I was! It’s all in four on the floor time. As a bass hack, even I recognized this but it took me some time to figure it. Black Dog too....all 4x4 time. Bonzo was hell-bent on getting it (his overall contribution to LZ,) right. I love him for that. I don’t think I’ll ever stop missing him. It was screwdrivers, that he was drinking...big ones too, on that fateful day. Basically it was the equivalent of an entire 1.75 bottle (give or take) that he took in that day/night. It’s simply too much liquor in a 12hr period and the body is just gonna reject it. I think most people start getting woozy after three gimlets - never mind a half gallon of it.

Thanks for this video, Otis! Love the church cemetery. I stop at them often on my bike rides. I have a memory of cruising around Indy in the late 70s on a double date in the back seat of a yes, Trans Am, with a great sound system listening to Bob Seger's live album. It was amazing! Can't speak to Bonham's drumming specifically, but Over the Hills and Far Away is my favorite LZ song.

Keith Moon was almost the Led Zeppelin drummer. I can't image what that would have sounded like. It probably would have been great but completely different. I'm glad Moon stayed with The Who. "When The Levee Breaks" and "In My Time of Dying" are what comes to my mind when I think of Bonham.

I get that same cyclical thing with classic rock myself. But every few months (even years!) when I play my teenage favourites from the 60s/70s again, it's a real high! Led Zeppelin, Neil Young, Stones, Hawkwind, Love... their best all sounds so well recorded. Some magical confluence of musical talent, personnel, sound engineering, equipment, social environment... all combined in a serendipitous way that is impossible to conjure up at will. And thanks, Otis, and Andy, for a great evening at the Thimblemill Library last Saturday. It was very much appreciated! Oh, and apart from all the well known Bonham-laden tracks, what about that funky off-beat on "Boogie With Stu"? Groovy. Love it. And the drum/bass crashing in on "Nobody's Fault But Mine" always sends chills down my spine. "Bonzo's Montreux" is pretty great too.

While maybe not as technically brilliant as Fool In The Rain, In My Time of Dying is one of my favorite Bonham performances. When The Levee Breaks is another all time favorite. I never got to see Zeppelin in person, Bonham died 6 months before I was born. But it was a revelation when I discovered them in my teens. Even though John is laying silently in that grave, he is still impacting and being heard by millions around the world.

I remember shortly after his death it was said he drank 31 screwdrivers before 2 pm that day. That it was not out of the ordinary for him. He laid down on a small couch and was gone a short time later. That's what I remember hearing. A Led Zep attorney I worked with said no, it was more than that.

The drum intro for 'Rock and Roll' was a nice count to come in when I was playing my les paul back in my bar band days..not too many drummers could get it right. but then again I was trying to dial in Jimmy Page and falling short of the mark too. Great insight into being a well rounded musician mixing yourself and being intuitive and leaving space. great episode. May the road rise to meet you Otis.

I never listen to Led Z anymore but I think when the levee breaks is a song I would listen to again if it came on the radio. Played rock for so long in cover bands I just cannot listen to classic rock anymore but John B was a monster drummer it was sad to see the shape his tombstone was in but 1980 was 41 years ago.Thanks again Otis for sharing this trip with us I hope you have a great tour. Hmm. So many great tunes its hard say. The movie at Madison Square Garden in 73 is awesome. No Quarter and Since I've Been Loving You are the best, but there's a part during Dazed And Confused, 9 minutes in, where Bonzo and JPJ gesture to each other and break into going to San Francisco.
