In this Signal Colors: Primer, I'm taking a look at the OTO Machines BOUM - a stereo warming unit w/ compression, distortion, and filtering. This super high quality box is part of the trio including the BIM and BAM (really fun stereo delay and reverb) and rounds out the group with some extra sizzle. Hang out while I check it out, and come back later for the full Signal Colors episode for an in-depth demo and review.

Really like how you suggest listening to the snare. Made the compression a lot more obvious. Thanks 👍

No problem! Yeah I noticed it was pretty impacted and was a good point of reference! Thanks for watching and for the comment 🙌

You can introduce sidechain from the OT in a couple of ways btw - using MIDI you can have it on its own track - but my preferred method is using a Cue out into the sidechain input and having a dedicated kick channel on the OT, as by default it'll send the audio to the cue and main out 👌👌Finally have a use for the Cue outs :) More often than not I'll set my Boum up for parallel compression which is where I think its sweet spot is - 50% on the Mix knob. Does mean that the filter becomes more of a subtle shaping tool.

Goddamn everything happen around 12:30 is absolute 🔥 I think I’d cop this before the other units, this has a sound for sure.

Haha thanks man! Yeah it's def a future (current?) classic! I keep buying and selling it though and I don't know why. I think it's because I love it but also don't need it as much now with my Model 1.4 mixer that adds some drive and really nice filtering, but that being said, I think it's also due to the fact that I'm still looking for "the compressor" for me, so it frees up funds for me to try some other stuff out. Going to get another Elysia unit with compression on my channel hopefully sometime on loan in the new year. I could see myself potentially coming back to the BOUM though, lol because as you say it definitely has a sound!

Go easy on the compression knob. Basically you're limiting at the 12 o'clock position and anything beyond results in dynamic reverse compression.

Thanks for the comment! I like to show the whole range of a device and my channel often focuses on kinda pushing stuff and experimenting - looking for the edges of what’s usable. If you stick to 12, you’re only experiencing half of what it offers! I found it pretty interesting after 12 honestly, but yes, depends on your use case. I appreciate the watch! :)

I'm trying to figure out if it makes sense to replace the valve dbx 386 with this unit for my guitar with digital system & a lot of effects..I like the Dbx make warmer my sound but still needs to be warmed up, compacted and also with digital systems(Mod Dwarf)I have great effects but it has too many resonances on the highs and needs more dynamics so on paper it seems ideal. Mybe is perfect combine it with the dbx but I must sell the Dbx if I want the Boum :(. Last question : Can you create & save your preset ? Thank you !

Hey Manuel, I haven't tried the BOUM with a guitar directly. I know the inputs are designed for line level so you'd have to re-amp the guitar signal or just use this as a post effect for the DAW, but yes you can definitely save presets! Hopefully someone with a little more guitar-based experience can chime in. Good luck! =)
