I struggle to know when to do a kick smash and when to dona flat smash?

If you are close the net, flat. The further you are, the more kick

only time you should go full flat is if youre going for a surprise smash when opponents havent started moving forward yet. otherwise unless youre close enough to go x4 you should have a bit of kick even on a short lob

on thing that I do not completely understand is why most of the best smash are hit with the player standing just on one leg and with sort of the other leg in the air on his side..
