This has been my go-to for a day shoulder bag, hiking and fishing kit for a long time. Over a collapsible twig stove, it allows for a canteen in a compact size and has everything that I need for most trips. I ditched the small cup and added a small modern square egg skillet with a new handle. I added a real coffee cup in enameled stainless and a thin heat proof square potholder.

That kit was designed for walking up to a military Mess kitchen to receive cooked food. The second smallest rectangle container bowl should clip onto the handler of the bigger, dumb bell style, so you could carry hot food back, using one handed, in the middle between the two, back to your tent or sheltered area. So it is to keep your meal from mixing up when served. Main meal in metal, side food in the smaller. The cap container is for items like a biscuit, rice, etc. The canteen is for washing your mess kit out before putting it up. It's not for drinking. Still, it is neat, and if a kid, yeah, lining up for food using it, rather cool. Some pork and beans are on one side, corn bread in the second, a little butter in the canteen cap. You can carry it all back by yourself, find a place to sit. Probably useful with a group, where food is centrally cooked, boat cooking, etc, where paper plates, or sitting at a table or near the kitchen isn't feasible. You have to find a nook to sit and eat. The old military mess kit, the old Boy Scott mess kit, had a plate top that was section off into 2 areas. This is what this kit tries to do.

PS, About this mess kit, attaching the plastic second container to the handle, carrying dumb bell style. I forgot to mention. The US WW II mess kit works the same way, that top cover plate with the divider, it fits over the pan handle, for mess chow lines use. It's for military efficiency, one item to hold, rather than two, walk a mess line, presenting each container to the server at the same time, single unit. The whole US kit has rings to group, everything together, to slide on the handle to do a 3 trash can containers duck-dump leftovers in water, soap- wash, rinse wash off method, line walk. This kit is a more personalized, carry a little soap, wash with canteen. Individually washing the kit. Carrying water to boil is possible with this kit from a stream, lake, to boil refill the kit's water, or main canteen. I rather like this kit and its belt loop carry over the US. Somewhere in storage, I have a relatives WW II mess kit. So either one design for st8 up cooking.
