@NichoTBE4 жыл бұрын
to be fair, the deer would likely try to leave if it really feared the otter, deer are just naturally skittish animals, and the mother was just concerned with protecting its babies instead of playing, which is why she kept putting herself between the otter and the fawns.

The otter isnt doing a submissive pose. He's inviting to play. Otters are very hands on with play and exploration. Literaly. They front paws are very hand like. But unlike us, the have them stuck under their body. Thus to reach for someone, especially someone bigger, they have to roll over. Which is what this otter does. Him flopping to the side like that is basically like you offering your open hand to a horse to sniff and nip at before rubbing its nose with the same hand.

wow! See how the mother deer is intrigued but also scared. She never allows her back to be facing the otter, she always faces him/her, also she always puts herself between the otter and her fawns. Mamas of every species are such an amazing force of nature.

@@grizzlygrizzle I wonder if any animal behaviorists have weighed in on this video. To me it's super obvious that the otter has had some prior playful interaction with either domesticated dogs, wild canid puppies, or some other non-otter species; otherwise he would have given up after the first dozen play solicitations were rejected by the doe. I'm also guessing that otter play styles are similar to dogs' -- he keeps soliciting play with the "here's my tummy" move, and if she takes even a single step toward him, he pops up and yells "Now we chase!" and runs away. I think if he put in enough time, he'd eventually train her to chase him, but she seems like a slow learner. We can't all be as smart as otters!

True! This is probably not the first otter she's ever seen, since their territories obviously overlap, but it looks like this is the first time she's seen an otter act like this! Otherwise, she would have made up her mind more quickly whether to run away with her fawns, chase the otter out of the yard, or just turn her back on it and ignore it. She keeps sniffing it (from a few feet away); I wonder if she's trying to smell whether there's some sort of disease or intoxication at play (no pun intended!) It's interesting that the otter is soliciting play mainly from her and not her fawns; maybe she was his playmate before those weird polka-dotted mini-deers came out of her belly! (Although that wouldn't explain the sniffing.)

@trypotherapy74785 жыл бұрын
To those saying that Otters don't eat large animals: If you take a look at the size of the otter compared to the fawns, you'd see they're kinda the same size... The otter wasn't going for the large animal mother, it was going for her approximately otter sized babies, I mean there's no denying the fact that it is continously trying to inch its way towards the fawns with it only rolling over when the mother reacts to it. Baby deer would've been an easy kill for a seemingly adult otter, if only it would have gotten the mothers guard down. Baby deer is an easy kill for an opportunistic predator.... The parts in between 3:15 to 3:33 and 4:51 to 5:04 really gave me a suspicion about an ulterior motive from the otter. Also by 1:32 the otter is sort of charging towards the fawns but the mother quickly jumps in the way and the otter lays on its back. So to summarise: The otter isn't hunting a large animal, it's hunting babies.
@redddbaron4 жыл бұрын
It is hunter behavior certainly But that otter could even kill the mother if it got a grip on her. Otters are in the weasel family and they hunt differently, but pure carnivores. That's not playing.

This is what I'm seeing. Otter sees fawns and thinks they're play-sized. Mother deer intercedes repeatedly. Otter rolls in a "don't step on me" sign. It becomes a game for the otter, a confusion for the doe.

Have to agree. This otter was up to no good. As much as you want to attribute human characteristics to animal behavior it would be too much a risk for the doe. Just like the photo of a polar bear with his paw around a husky in a bond of friendship-turned out to be his lunch
@prbprb25 жыл бұрын
I agree with some of the others here. The otter is not playing. Mustelids lull their prey to sleep, by this randomish play, then grab the unsuspecting prey by the throat or back of neck. The otter cannot catch the fawn outright, so it must be deceptive. From the perspective of the otter, he is burning up some calories "playing" and maybe will not catch the fawn with its guard down. But he might get lucky and find an opportunity to pounce.
@kristinowens49725 жыл бұрын
Philip R. Baldwin sorry but I've never heard of deer being on an otters menu. Otters eat fish mostly and since they are so good at catching fish I really doubt they need to go after deer, even baby ones. Trust me I've done scat studies on otters to determine what kinds of fish they were eating, from the scales, and never found even one mammal bone of any species in their scat. Heck I didn't even find frog bones and they would be more an otter size prey than deer. I'm pretty sure that otter was trying to be social, it was showing all the play signs. My guess is either it was young and curious about the deer or for some reason it was separated from its family and was compelled to try and make a relationship with the deer. Otters are very social animals and need companionship.
@prbprb25 жыл бұрын
@@kristinowens4972 Yes, I agree. I don't think that an otter can catch a deer. I just meant that I don't think it is really playing to be cute... You know more than me. :)
@chrismatacia43045 жыл бұрын
Nah, I don’t think I can agree with ya lol but ya can’t really know what exactly mr otter planned to do. But what I know about otters diet and the way they can swim up to 30 mph and a lethal aquatic predator, it is not very likely to get the idea that venison was for dinner! However if marine life is not going on to support this fella birds are not unheard of as becoming the meal of a otter. So what’s to say that a predator such as this fella was not going on a multi level agenda that involved playtime and a long shot at a venison treat,? But my money is that he or she was showing up to reveal the notorious playful and energized personality and make some friends also! Sure wish I had a chance to experience this rare and exciting encounter!

What a great interspecies communication. Otter seems only interested in play, but can tell that the doe is trepidatious. So in his frenzied, goofy antics, he continually flips over and show his belly every time he’s near her. Even though the otter is no threat (and keeps reminding her so) the mama deer is having none of it. “You see children, that is why we stick to our own kind. Those otters just can’t take anything seriously.”
