I still can't believe as kids we climbed that mountain to investigate the castle. That was 50 years ago

My father grew up in Liberty, and said that the kids in the neighborhood claimed Hillig had a special radio transmitter in the tower for communicating with Germany! Perfect myth for the Buck Rogers era. Hillig was an excellent photographer (owned a photo studio in town), and made hundreds of post cards of Liberty and the environs from the teens and twenties. One of my great regrets is not buying, circa 1980, a framed collection of his photos (with annotations) documenting a 1916 cross-country trip in his Buick touring car!

@@seisenbe I remember your parents well--they were lovely folks. I think I might have a snapshot of them circa 1960 in an old photo album, horsing around in some funny pose

I lived on Swinging Bridge in the 60's and on a clear day out on the lake looking north you could make out the tower. A few years later while home on leave (early 70's) I drove up to it; I don't remember if I went inside or not. I'm living in Germany now and saw something that reminded me of that occasional wondrous view from my lake when I was a little boy.

Awesome video. Do you by chance have the coordinates or some way I can find this on Google earth? I was enchanted by this place as a kid driving to my Grandma's house in Monticello. It faded from view as the years passed by the growing pines.

I grew up in this area, could always see the tower from the Dairy Queen, my Dad who graduated Liberty High always warned us against going up there. On my last trip home, it would appear that the tower has finally given way and collapsed. So much has changed, its true you can never go back.

Can anybody else remember the white stones on the Route 17 side that spelled "Liberty"? I tried to pick out in the video where they were, but wasn't successful. Geoff Brown

They were in front of the castle facing old Rt. 17 and the N.Y.O.7.W RR. Hillig also had red neon lights on the top of his castle's tower.
