Big thank you! I followed your advice and bought an Ottocast U2-X, I can confirm that it is exactly what I needed. In Mercedes E-Class, boots up in less than 30 secs, all the integrated controls work perfectly and is WIDE SCREEN Android Auto! Where Daimler failed, Ottocast filled in. Only one small advice, Carplay is default, so on the first bootup you have to select AA icon from left corner and reboot.

Just received my Ottocast U2-X (Feb 2022) from Indegogo. Set up was easy for Android auto on my 2021 Subaru Outback. Boot time is about 30 seconds and everything works great. The best feature is that while wired Android auto was only 1/2 screen on my 11.5" display, using the Ottocast it comes up as full screen which is really nice especially for google maps. I'm impressed with this unit and happy I chose the Ottocast over the others.

You can use this on a CarPlay only car system to connect your android to. But it’s for android auto. It won’t turn allow your android device to run CarPlay. Android uses its own platform, which is android auto.

Thanks Ken. They are two different dongles aimed at different uses. The X just offers wireless CarPlay and android auto. Whilst the Plus does this through android layer whilst also offering the ability to use android apps, which gives the opportunity to use the Plus for a solid platform for video streaming on the CarPlay display.

Hi, I have a 2018 E class Mercedes. it has the large (non touch) wide screen AA only takes up 2/3s and has the AA logo in the other 1/3 of the screen. Will ottocast allow my android device to use apple carplay full screen? Also is it useable with the manual scroll controls? thanks in advance

It will do exactly what it does when using a wired connection. So if it’s not fully wide then it will be the same. Some support manual controls. Or act just like it does when using wired CarPlay.

@@CarPlayLife I think as soon as your a few walls away the connection will surely drop. Something like from the porch where I’m parked to the bedroom at the back of the house. I can return it as soon as it drops connection to the dongle, with the help of my hapless kids but so far in 3 attempts only 1 auto reconnection occurs. On another 2 tries, I’d have to manually reconnect via the Bluetooth menu.

That’s correct and they are the latest versions from Ottocast, right now. I can’t say how good mirroring will be. It never seems to be that good on any dongle.

These two in one dongles have some extra time to connect as they have to boot up software before pairing BT with your phone. So there is going to always be some length of time before it pairs. Some do this better than others. I hope to do a 2in1 round up this month. So watch the channel.

Less delay is very unlikely to be improved on. It’s just how WiFi works and the traits of how it performs over using faster Bluetooth. BT great for audio speed but terrible at video. WiFi is the opposite. As for boot up speed. I think it could be improved, but speed is so relative to the car system. A dongle could take a mere 10s to boot in one car and over 60s in another. So it’s all relative to what it’s plugged into. Even factory wireless CarPlay in a new Polo took 17s. That’s the fastest I’ve seen wireless carplay boot, but that built in. These dongles have to work with your system and it’s power before it can operate. All that will add extra delay to what the dongle can do itself.

There is no way around it. That’s a common delay with how WiFi works. It can also be personal task in how you use it for calling. It just it think that’s why you get some people complain and some don’t think it’s a big deal. I would buy from Amazon and if it’s bad for you return it and stick with cable CarPlay. This won’t get fixed that much unless they put in faster wifi6 chips inside them.

Is it the phone already has blue tooth function being able to connect to the head unit? Without a dongle the head unit wouldn't work with the phone even if through blue tooth? Thanks!

The dongle/adapter just converts wired CarPlay or android auto into operating wirelessly over BT/WiFi. It’s different to just audio streaming over BT to the stereo (that’s not CarPlay). It’s a convenience accessory mostly or, with this particular dongle, it allows people with android phones to connect to a car display that only has a CarPlay option and run Wireless android auto on it. @@穗羊下凡 CarPlay and AndroidAuto is mostly on the phone itself, and it just sends a data feed over Wi-Fi of Audio and Video to the car head unit that has CarPlay or AA support to accept that signal. So the system itself needs to have CarPlay or AA support, to accept this data feed and also pass any touch input back to the phone to switch apps and interact with its functionality. Only Android needs the AA app downloaded to the phone, whilst CarPlay it is built into the system. This is soon changing with Android 12 and above, where it will be more in the system level and they are moving away from the AA app for Android. Hope this makes sense

If nothing comes up on your CarPlay display then the dongle is either faulty or there is a compatibility issue with your particular system. Trying to dongle on another CarPlay car would rule the first out. If it works on a different make and model car then it’s compatibility and you will need to talk to their support team for advice on possibly updating it with a fix.

question...... just received my ottocast and plugged it into my 2018 Acuta TLX .Carplay did load fine wirelessly from my iphone however my source button on the steering wheel now says "off", and im unable to select or scroll through sources, is this something that happens when the ottocast is installed? normally I can scroll through and see XMradio, fm radio, bluetooth etc? Great review, thanks. To do the update, you had to go back to using your iPhone. Why can't you update using an android phone? Is it just because you didn't have a sim in your android phone? But then, until you updated it, it wouldn't boot into android.

I had to use iPhone because you have to connected to the dongle to issue the update via the IP address on the connected phone. I couldn’t do it on android the first time. I think it got confused since I did get connected first time on the coral vision CarPlay display but when going into the car system it didn’t like it. I think it might be more reliable on a factory system than my aftermarket. You might be able to update by plugging it into the wall also and accessing the WiFi profile

I got my device last week and I am not very happy with it. First, my Mercedes E, / W213, year 2017, don't recognize the device. Second, as I tried to update the firmware, it hangs after downloading, telling I have to wait until the Update is finished. Ottocast declares, that my car should be compatible, but obviously it isn't, so I have now a piece of electronics for notthing :(

Great video. I have a CarLinKit 3.0 for my iPhone. It tends to not connect occasionally. Would you recommend this device over the Carlink? I assume you want wireless Android Auto on a CarPlay system? if so your other options are the CarLinkit 4.0 adapter, the MMB Wireless Adapter Plus v3, and AutoBox also have an update that offers AAuto support - that I have yet to review.

I would be tempted to recommend the MMB adapter plus v3 edition. MMB test a lot on Mercedes’ which has the dial/pad input so they might be more suited for this type of control over some other dongles. I would check first with your car make, year and model to confirm compatibility

I have an eonon 10.1 android 10 after market radio that uses wired Android auto, I'm thinking about going wireless because of the convenience, I was wondering if you think this will work , and if this is the most reliable one you recommend or do you have one that you recommend. This dongle would have to work with your CarPlay app on your android headunit. If that’s possible there’s not many options for you right now. I hope to get hold of the Motorola MA1 that’s mean to work with wired AA.

@@jeffwitt8556 That's odd then. Seeing as you have wireless working on the Hyundai, then I don't know about the mini. I am sure the android can take multiple instances of a connection. One thing to try is to remove any BT profile connection to the hyundai and mini, restart your phone and connect to the mini first and see if you're successful.

you should nmote wireless carplay is also good as it allows you to use a 15watt car charger which is very esential as Apple maps drains the battery quite quickly so 5w of charging wont charge your phone enough

You can’t run android auto and CarPlay simultaneously. The way you use the boot screen is that you have to select either platform first before it can connect to it.

why the heck would you bother with wireless if you can just plug a cable in for faster speed? the cable just follows your phone to the stereo usb cable.

Wireless CarPlay has its advantages. Such as not having to connect your iPhone when jumping in the car, great for small/quick trips. You can also charge your iPhone at a much faster rate on a wireless charger than the 5W from the usual CarPlay USB port. You can pass your iPhone around if any one wants to play DJ. You can have your phone out of reach from any tiny fingers ;) basically most of all it’s a convenience thing and a quality of life thing. Plugging in for CarPlay is still preferred if you’re on a long journey and you’re using navigation don’t have a means to charge whilst using wireless. It offers fast boot time also, but wireless is an experience that I have rarely gone back from.

As long as your android is running android 11 for wireless Android Auto then yes this should let you have android auto on your CarPlay car system.

@@guidedbygreen1480 best? No. There aren’t many that do this and if there is another it’s the same underneath. The only other option is running an Android AI Box but that starts to cover complicate things if you just want AA on a CarPlay system.

@@guidedbygreen1480 no problem. There is an gap in the market for AA dongles for CarPlay only systems. But as more newer vehicles begin to offer both, I can understand that maybe the demand may not be as high as other areas. But cars with this setup sell in the millions of units so there is still a userbase out there that could be used for dongles such as this one. It just might not be financially viable for them. 🤷🏻‍♂️ right now this one (and others similar to it) maybe your only solution right now.

Thanks. Yes it seems there isn’t a seamless way to do it other than to put CarPlay on an Android OS layer. And if they were to go that far it starts to become an Android Os dongle instead. They way feels more stable but a bit of a nightmare if you had to swap often between the two

Yeah, all the videos showing how to install CarBridge on iOS15 are a bit shady, but jailbreak for iOS15 shouldn’t take too much time to come out.

There are dongles for android auto systems but they are rare and don’t work as smoothly as the CarPlay ones.

@@ucviet5755 yup same thing under the door but with some slightly modified software for better stability over the Ottocast (apparently) I’ve yet to test it.
