I think you are right....no matter what the situation, Rumple seems to always be perfectly in control and knows exactly who to manipulate and how. It made his final moment all the sweeter.

I love that in this scene, if even for a moment, it was so satisfying to have Rumple feel like a fairy godfather or something with how he's helping Emma (although really himself, although we don't totally know that yet) and he's so genuinely happy to help her and stick it to Regina (whom we've had villainized up until this point, so it feels satisfying). Feels like he's playing the loving wise-old-man/grandfather type

Rumpelstiltskin CREATED Emma. He made sure her parents succeeded in fighting for each other through thick and thin. The pressure his other pawn, Regina, put on them turned them into diamonds, their remarkably pure love into its truest form. Her father was one of his few friends, one of the rare people he respected in any form, turned to for help and advice (or even implied that he needed help at all to), and shared a few of his closely guarded secrets with (Belle, particularly). And as little as David wanted to admit it, he always went straight to Rumpelstiltskin when he was in need, at least after the discovery that they both experienced true love. During the time she embraced her evil side, Regina represented the darkness in Rumpelstiltskin, all the twisted things he felt compelled to do to get back to his son, since he'd also made HER, too. Emma was his light. I think he quite enjoyed sticking it to the Darkness when he got the chance.

What happened to Henry was the natural consequences of Regina's need for control and power. Thankfully it was also the turning point of her seeing what she was about to loose because of it.

He just sent them on a wild goose or dragon chase for something Emma could've done from the start of the episode if he told them but that was never going to happen. If he told them kissing henry was the answer then there would be nothing in it for him in return i.e. bringing magic to storybooke and furthering his plan to find his son. He's really good at playing the looong game and treating everyone like unwitting pawns. That's what I love most about his character in my opinion.

And it's right sometimes he plays with that specially when the deal is "you will owe me a favor." who say yes if you don't know what you will do for him? A desperated person... What I love with him is that he may be doing something that isn't useful at the moment but he thinks for the next years or decades. He prepared the potion 28 years ago. He represents what I'm not, I can't even predict my next few days 🤣 and I must admit that it fascinates me.

I don't know.... Emma doesn't BELIEVE easily. If her father heard "True Love's Kiss breaks any curse, now go kiss your kid," he'd have bolted out the door in a second. He did do that for Snow White repeatedly. But I think Emma would be uncertain at this point and argued hard, wheedling for ANY solution that didn't involve her having to bank on how much she loved someone. It's TRUE Love's Kiss, not "Sure I Care About Him, But Is It Love???" Kiss. We, the audience, knew Emma loved Henry enough, but she was terrified because of her past in unloving foster homes and due to her disastrous relationship with Neal. Emma admitted that she was overwhelmed, felt like she couldn't save others, and barely felt she could handle being there for her kid. She struggled with believing in magic, but that seemed mostly due to her struggles with believing in herself. And we know that True Love requires being willing to sacrifice. A simple kiss wouldn't be enough, just like Rumple kissing Belle wasn't enough to bring her back from her sleeping curse - he would've had to be willing to give up being the Dark One for her, and he wasn't. In Emma's case, the sacrifice was her fear. She accepted her role as the Savior and mother who loves her son, which is what Henry wants and needs her to be. She hasn't even told Henry she loves him until just before True Love's Kiss. Emma is able to do that when she has tried and failed to save Henry with the potion, when she thinks all hope is lost and she's desperate and despairing enough. And when she doesn't know that the kiss could save Henry, so she isn't thinking of failing when she kisses him. Just that she loves him and would do anything to get him well. (AND REGINA WOULD TOO - I feel like the curse could not have broken if Regina had held on to it hard enough, but she didn't care about the curse, just about Henry, and actively worked toward a result that would likely end the curse.) Rumpelstiltskin is savvy, familiar with fear, and thinks a zillion steps ahead. I think it likely he may have thought of this, if it was actually an issue (and belief had been a serious issue so far for her). So I feel that the fetch quest for the Love Potion solved two of Rumpelstiltskin's problems. 1. Retrieving the potion so he can get magic to a magic-less land, 2a. Getting the Savior desperate enough to realize that she loves her boy more than her fear, and 2b. Getting the Savior to kiss her son without realizing the stakes of that kiss.

I feel like Rumple was a little defensive of Henry like even before he knew he was his grandson he saw a bit of Bae in Henry (a young boy just a bit younger than bae was when he lost him) so he seems genuinely angry that an innocent boy ended up paying the price for regina's revenge. Just his tone of voice. I think he knew Emma would be able to save Henry without the true love potion

A kind of magic that Regina couldn't conceive at the time & Emma would not have understood. So yeah Rumple always had the upper hand. He got his comeuppance when it was deserved, but he was such a great villain. I would have loved to see him verse Jafar. The Jafar from OUAT in Wonderland. He was fantastic as well.

But to keep up appearances, he tells everyone that he created it. It's implied, I believe in the episode where Rumple loses Bae, that the Dark Curse isn't his because when asking for a way to get to a Land Without Magic, Blue lets it slip that a Dark Curse would work. Rumple promises to love no one and spend every waking moment looking for the Curse. Also, the Seer predicts that Rumple will cast the Dark Curse, not make it. So it's implied early on that it's not his. Plus in Season 4, we see how he gets it.

@@sjaak7106 He created more than just a loophole. The curse had clearly been changed.(it was originally created as fairy magic. Fairy dust was the catalyst for the spell, and rumple made the catalyst for the spell-the heart of the closest person. ) The black fairy wanted to use the curse to protect her family.(her son) She had no intention of sacrificing her loved ones.

@@sjaak7106 Of course, black fairy dust is hard to get, because the black fairy herself was exiled to another world.(long before the curse). It is also unique because the black fairy is the only fairy who use dark magic. In addition, the black fairy was one of the most powerful existences in all the realms.(even Rumple in his previous form was wary of her)
