Don't fret ☺ The oud is not something I would recommend to anyone as their first string instrument, but it's not that scary once you "get" the tones. I don't have perfect pitch, I can't tell an E flat apart from a slice of pizza, but I can hear intervals (i.e thirds, fourths, fifths). That's why I like modal tunes with drones.
