When the Ducati Multistrada V4S had a similar problem, not only did owners get a new crate engine swap, but they were also offered a package (compensation credits and warranty extension, etc). BMW has done the right thing, but they could go a little to support the early adopter beta testers.

A little comparison for a talking point.....BMW realizes that 52 bikes have over/under torqued connecting rod bolts.....BMW contacts the owners and replaces the engine even if no issues have arisen for those owners. Harley Davidson realizes that many of their touring bike crankshafts have a excessive amount of runout.....doesn't issue a recall, instead chooses to change the max runout spec to save $$$ and keeps it quiet.....regardless of issues that have arisen. Great job standing behind your product and your brand BMW.

This tells me that their production quality monitoring systems are working well that they could pick up something like this, and even better that they were open and honest about the problem, offering a total engine replacement! They could simply have kept quiet about it and hoped that due to the small number involved there would be limited or no failure during the warranty period, but it seems that does not align with their core values as a company. I say well done to BMW! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

The fact the engines were fitted into bikes and sent out for sale would indicate their quality monitoring systems are not working properly. if it had been 5000 bikes would they have been so open and honest?

Well, I have owned 7 BMWs. It's been a decade since the last one. I am in the market for a new bike, was looking at BMWs again. Thank you for the reminder why I sold my last one and have not had one since.... Will continue my search now that I have come back to my senses.... Great BMW has a great attitude, problem is, this is unacceptable for a new vehicle in the 21st Century. Now the owner has no bike until the motor comes back. If this were a Ural, could accept it, but not BMW.

Seems improbable to think that any major manufacturer can always avoid at least some production issue with a new model when introduced. That said, even models that have been in production for years have issues. Some context would help. 52 bikes out of how many total produced to date? How close were the affected models to the end of the pre-production phase as inevitable new model production issues were still being ironed out? The fact that this particular case allowed bikes to ship with an incorrect torque setting on the assembly line makes one think that BMW's production system and software self checks were not yet fully in place for the new model. If I recall correctly, previous generation GS video documentaries of BMW Motorrad's boxer engine production seemed to imply that torque settings were validated on the assembly line by the production system software while the engine was actually being assembled. This leads one to believe that at some point in production, some torque settings were being set manually and the issue only found in a post production audit.

I have owned a 2004 R1150R since it was new. I had a BMW mechanic tell me a couple of years ago that the 1150s were the last BMWs built to spec not price. BMW developed a reputation for bikes that would never die because they built them to specification without worrying about what that did to the price. According to the mechanic anyway, the R1150s were the last bikes they did that with. The 1200s and all of the bikes after that were built to a price not to a specification and the quality of the bikes reflected that. I have 50,000 miles on my R1150 and the engine runs smoother today than it did new. They don't seem to make them like that anymore.

I had a new 1998 K1200RS which had a short crankshaft. Overnight a new motor was sent and installed. Found at 487 miles. It never sounded right from first fire up. It was fixed. I also saw 23 engines sitting at dealer take outs. replaces, bad oil pumps set up. Hundreds were replaced. Later rebuilt for training and series car racing power plans. Glad they caught it. Those rods are frozen/fractured after machining and no two are alike as they match back perfectly with bolts and caps. First oilheads in '93 used this method. Paperwork / title has to match for Carnet de Passage for world travel. Break it in as specified. They will make about 300 per day. So they caught it during inspection of video taping. Now when it is traded there may be a discount for not matching numbers or history of repair. So some incentives from BMW for the occurrence of the issue.

For me it's the right way to do it. Acknowledge errors and correct them generates trust. My R1300GS Tramuntana is closing to 3.000km issues free. I had the 1250 and I think the new one is at least a bit better on everything. It handles very well, the new tires are way better, it weights less and better consumption figures (8-10%). The only thing that bothers me is the combined braking...I think that a rider of an adventure bike with 1.300cc has experience enough to decide on how to combine its breaking. Ah! And the fog lights activation its just crazy and insecure. I also have a story with BMW engine assembly problems to share; I had an issue with my 5 series and they've call me in car to take the vehicle to the repair shop before the car had 500km. They solved it no charges and I'm a happy customer. That's one of my key reasons to keep on buying BMW. ✌🇵🇹

I'm wondering if the engineer used the AI for his calculations. Many companies actually use the AI (my PC has a program based on the AI that should optimize it). Anyway I call that AD, that is Artificial Dementia, but it's a machine, so the real demented is the man. The purpose is always money, firing people, who have family, because the companies substitute them with a machine is not their concern. Anyway I can't know what BMW is doing, but nowadays many companies have to recall their products because they found important defects... who knows why... a man is not perfect, and a machine will never be. Did BMW the right thing? Yes. Is it enough? No. Would they have done this to every problem and to every registered customer? Certainly not. No Brand does that. Hiding is still a common approach, no brand excluded. As BMW has proven on the relais issue, knowing but playing it down, like everyone in the industry. Many do this to get the bike over the warranty and reject proper warranty claims. So why isn’t it enough? Well you may ignore the re-sale value impact of Engine Exchanges or not-matching numbers, but buyers don’t. You may be friendly to BMW to keep your bike off you for weeks or months, but others won’t. So, no, a engine exchange needs to come with additional compensation service, i.e. a free BMW training weekend or whatever to ensure/compensate for Customer happiness. And doubling of the manufacturer’s proof period in warranty. I have not heard of any of those aspects in this and the german presentation. And No, it’s not enough to allow a production process of elements that have a fatal impact on repair capability to be left that loose without countermeasures assuring quality before proceeding to the next process step. I’m expecting quality perfection here, as we’re talking about a manufacturer of the highest quality competence grade, not always executed in their cars either, I know that, owning a variety of BMW cars for many decades (which should assure you that I am not a BMW hater, at all). The process designer, not the workers are to be blamed! He should be fired! Together with him anyone telling customers that the reason for the relais-issue is a 3rd-party problem. No, it’s BMWs problem to have cheapened out in the supplier quality control or acceptance control process. The same issue to me, the same responsible, the process designer and the service/marketing people deferring responsibility putting it on the 3rd party. It may be the cause, but not the problem. That is with Quality-Process-Management. To a long-term test, this is for me, the end of it. I’d expect BMW to change their way of Quality-Process-Management before I’d buy another bike from them for a long-term test. That’s how our customers deal with us, contract termination for convenience if acceptance process or quality assurance process is bad at the Pilot test (the first normal deliveries). If that is a much later issue, similarly will be worked on remediation and re-tested, compensations will be given out, liabilities shares will be negotiated and continuous operational improvement plans be established and timely executed and documented. No, BMW has not done enough! Have they done more than others? Yes, to my otherwise very bad experiences with Honda and Triumph, but maybe less to other people’s experiences, as I can see below in other comments, where their issues were dealt with in much more comprehensive engagement. Is it a technical design flaw? Yeah, arguably yes, but it’s all historical compromises part of an ancient Boxer Design. I leave that to the engineers that may have a view on how this ancient design flaw can be remediated to a much easier repairability.

Great? Sorry, I have a completley different idea about great. Respect? BMW has been building boxer engines for over 100 years now... They are a bunch of assholes! I own an RT and when you compare some of their design solutions to what the Japanese do I already knew they are a bunch of assholes! German quality is absolute BS and has been so for decades! Just look at the problems with new German automobiles from all German makes. However there is a lesson: never ever purchase a new model bike (or car or TV or what have you) in its first year of production. Wait 18 to 24 months so they can learn how to assemble it properly. And this is true for all makes!

This is clickbait bullshit with negative headlines - BMW do the right thing and why not give credit. Are you trolling looking for haters?

I guess when things like this happen, it gives you the chance to gain a few extra views. What a load of blah blah blah. Anything positive to say about bikes??
