We're back to working on our project "Cheap Cherokee" and we're making our own bumpers with one of the coolest tools we've ever had in our shop. Then, we're off to Orlando Florida for Matco's Tool Expo and we're taking our Cherokee with us. We're not only going to get some great help on our Cherokee but, we'll also be checking out some of the newest tools on the market. And after all that, we'll start a real-world test on a system that promises to give your more miles per gallon.

Cheap Cherokee huh. I'm into mine around 1100 including the cost of the jeep😄 flares and tires alone are probably close to 800 to 1k depending on tires wheels and if you bought a set of 4

They were in a hurry and didn't have time to cut the sheet metal by hand, so they took 5 hours to set up a cnc cutter that can cut it in 10 minutes.

WHAT THE HECK ARE YOU DOING!?!?!? You cant go cutting pinch seams out on UNIBODY vehicles! Cutting those rear fenders out like that just destroyed that Jeep. The proper way to modify the rear wheel arch is to cut vertical lines between the pinch welds and fold the sheetmetal inward to maintain the strength of the body. I have personally seen Jeeps that had the wheel arch cut out like you have done here and it caused all kinds of issues with panel gaps, excessive flexing in the rear body, and rust will now run rampant no matter what you do to fix it. I've also heard of it causing the rear windows to become prone to popping out, if you end up with that issue, good luck sourcing 2 door XJ windows. You've also drastically altered the safety of the vehicle, if it gets rear-ended or rolls over, the damage will be FAR greater than if those seams were left intact. Very disappointed a high budget show like this would do something like this, even following the directions that come with cut-out flares it CLEARLY states not to cut the pinch welds and shows the proper way to install. It's also common knowledge in the Jeep community that cutting those pinch welds out is a death sentence for an XJ.

Came looking for a comment about cutting out the spot welds in the pinch seam! Yep, unless they did a bunch of sheet metal work and welding to repair the rear opening that XJ is hurtin'!
@Thestockxj96

I'm glad you said something to me about that. Both of my Cherokees are stcok, and I knew nothing about needing to cut the seams vertically. Thankfully, I've never cut my seams, so I'm good. 😊I plan to keep it stock anyway, so I will be going with stock fender flares. I have a mew motor and trans in one of them already and the other has 287k. Unfortunately they both need windshields. I will keep this knowledge in mind in case anyone ever asks. 😊

I was hoping that they would’ve shown how they fixed it. I was thinking they were going to weld it back together or something but nope. I have a 2-door XJ and will not be cutting the pinch welds in the rear.

Frame tie in strengthener for that front bumper would have helped. Plus the unibody isn't going to like be cut up like that on the rear fenders. Not the way do that on an XJ.

@magicmarger
@magicmarger 4 жыл бұрын
With stricter emission laws from year to year (little exaggerated), CO2 in the focus, and the direct correlation between consumption and CO2 emission: if it would be that easy to save on a few drops of diesel, OEMs would put those things in every car. Or long story short: nope.

Its pretty typical to cut the arch away like that if you're going with wider wheels and tires and need more clearance during articulation. The only time you wouldn't cut them is if they're being used as mud guards, and you're not worried about the tires contacting the existing arches.

@@Canuckrz the XJ is a unibody vehicle and it drastically reduces the strength of the body to cut those pinch seams out. It clearly states in the instructions for cut-out flares for an XJ to not cut them like that. They need to be cut vertically between the pinch welds and folded inward. I feel bad for whoever ends up with this Jeep after they are done with it because its going to be a lot less safe on the road and is already starting to rust out in there.
@Canuckrz
@Canuckrz 4 жыл бұрын
@@dakota.zimmerman I see, thanks for the info. As far as the next person who gets it goes you don't have to worry, most of the vehicles they make on these shows end up crushed unfortunately. Adam Stacy the OG Trucks host talked about it before and it was part of the reason why he ended up going over to Gearz.
@dakota.zimmerman

@@Canuckrz wow that's just sad. I suppose it's a liability if they sell it to someone with all the "upgrades" they do. That's good to know tho, I have found some companies just don't care about how hard it is to find things. I've had a similar run-in with a company that would throw out Sega Genesis game cases because "they take up too much space". Irreplaceable and very hard to find for us who don't have money to throw at everything. Lost a lot of respect for this show now. Wish there were more like roadkill where they actually care about the vehicles and will get anything back on the road.
