Our Cirrus SR20 Overhaul Reveals a BIG Problem... (New Engine Install)

After 6 months, we finally have a major update video with our G1 Cirrus SR20. We bought the plane last year, and flew it home 1000 miles to AZ. It was by far the cheapest Cirrus for sale in the world! Unfortunately Fish found some internal damage which will lead us to needing a full engine rebuild overhaul. While the engine was apart, our A&P found a major problem... We needed a new engine case / block. We also discuss the costs for these parts and overhaul in this video. Luckily by the end of this video, the engine will finally be back on the plane!

The same crack appeared on my SR20 engine after 400 hours. Not a good day. Watch out for insurance costs for low time pilots. A few hundred hours of 20 time might help the insurance costs when you move up to the 22.

Great video, and I love that you guys are willing to share the costs with us. This is why GA is dying though; the costs are just extortionate, due to the certification rules. I mean $12,000 for two lumps of formed metal! The actual production cost for the new case was probably less than $1,000. All of the rest goes towards litigation funds associated with certification. Here in the UK, I just changed over from GA to LSA (ML in the UK) and the cost savings are insane. I got a 2 screen glass cockpit and advanced autopilot for £9,000. To buy the same set up in a certified aircraft would have been £50,000+ !!! If VFR is your mission, then LSA really is worth a serious look. It is likely to reduce overall aviation costs by over 70%. Also, if you think the IO-360 ES engine is costly to repair and maintain, the IO-550 in the SR22 is a whole new ball game! I'd personally stick with the SR20. It's a better training aircraft and (having flown both), the 20 is much nicer to hand fly; the 22 just being so heavy up front because of that huge lump.

Id say its more corporate greed than anything. I worked at a part 145 repair station, I know what the costs were for overhauls and the push to constantly make the quarterly dollars go up and up constantly. Our pay stayed the same but we just kept seeing the prices of overhauls and individual parts increase for no reason.

Jeffrey and Christian my gosh I'm very stoked to see your spectacular plane (Cirrus SR-20) is looking better and better. We all share a huge passion for aviation!! I'm super excited to see the plane making lots and lots of progress.🤙😎 I'm being completely honest with you guys, I think it'd be an awesome idea to sell the SR-20 while it's at the peak of the market and look into getting a SR-22. The SR-22 is a very popular aircraft and it's really efficient, has great features, outstanding performance, and it's amazing in basically every category. I think it's 💯 percent worth it to upgrade to the SR-22.👌 I actually got accepted to an aircraft maintenance program in Altus, Oklahoma. It will take up to a year and a half to two and a half years. I'm also most definitely still striving to become a pilot.

Cut to scene, Money changing hands to sell the SR20. Cut to the purchase of an SR22. New plane arrives, the mechanic looks at it and discovers the whole engine needs to be replaced. Just like the SR20. Talk about luck! I really wish you guys good luck in finding an SR22 if that is the route you choose to go. Just remember all of the problems you went through getting this one running. The thinking seems correct but if it was my money to spend, I would hold on to the SR20 as you know exactly what is wrong with the aircraft. Fresh engine, and a new annual. The only way I would sell is if you have an incredible offer which would make sense.

Your plane will have had a complete overhaul, essentially a new engine, will have been inspected and I assume found to be in excellent condition. At that point it will be more valuable than it ever will be again so if you want to take advantage of the favorable market and move up to an SR22, that will be the time to do it. Get your plane finished and pull the trigger.

That overhauled Continental engine won't be much better than your old engine. Continental engines are all junk. Sell that plane asap get a good reliable Lycoming engine plane. Or your going take it deep again & again even with a sr 22. TCM cylinders are shit. Continentals don't have nitrided barrels or sodium cooled valves like a Lycoming engine. Continentals wear out cylinder bores & burn exhaust valves. They got shit compression from new. Thats why they need the master orifice to pass the compression test at 42psi. Lycomings pass will 70 or above no problem. And fish knows this very well.

It’s about time someone kicked these old clunky overweight motors out of GA. Think how many high output engines are out there in European cars. All good for 200,000 highway miles with nothing more than oil and filter changes. A much harsher environment than an aircraft, cold starts and running on highways before warm up, stop/start, idling in traffic. Automobile engines far better than any CO out there.
