We bought a 2003 Cirrus SR20 G1! This is a huge milestone long in the making! We got a great deal on our first plane making it one of the cheapest Cirrus SR20s on the market! Join us through all the steps it took to find, purchase, and fly this plane home over 1,000 miles! Yes, we bought this plane without a pilot’s license so thank goodness for our pilot friend Owen @SJCspotter. We are very excited to document working toward our pilot’s license as well as sharing all the adventures and opportunities it offers!

Congrats guys! I own a Comanche 250 I hangar at Deer Valley, but I work in the Scottsdale Airpark. I, similar to you guys, decided to purchase a plane to get my license in. My first aircraft was a Cherokee 140/160 I purchased in Tuscon. If you guys want, I'd be happy to meet up sometime. It's always helpful to have local pilot friends when your headset breaks the day before your checkride like mine did, or you just want to get a second opinion on a cross country plan.

Congrats guys! I have a 2007 Cirrus G2 SR20 of my own. You’re going to love the CirrusLife. Just replaced all of the interior in mine. One quick tip, those seatbelts should be worn low on your waist and then tightened. Looks like a nice plane! Enjoy

Yes this is a huge deal! I'm almost 18 but when I was 16 before starting on working on my private pilots license I was meeting lots of CFIs as suggested by lots of friends in the aviation industry. Trust me it's a big deal when you have a a cfi who just needs hours to get into the regionals and pay their rent VS A guy who truly cares about the student and his passion for flying. It could make or break your experience. JR you are awesome keep it up🙌🏽

Cirrus pro tip: make sure your lap belts are cinched across your waistband and don't ride up to your stomach. See it a lot amongst cirrus pilots. Don't want any submarining to happen in the event of an impact or caps pull. Step climbs also help in the sr20s when you're heavy and it's hot out, the cylinder like to get hot under those conditions. Keeping CHTs under 400 during climbs will help prevent unnecessary cylinder changes in my experience.

Owned a SR22 for the past 5 years. Fantastic traveling machine. Get the instrument rating and stay proficient! You will actually love that free caster nose wheel, super tight turning radius. Taxi fast to give the rudder some authority and try not to drag the brakes. Enjoy!

Best of success with your flight training journeys. That looks like an awesome aircraft you purchased. Only suggestion is to strive for being the best "Pilot in Command" you can be - everything done by the book, with no deviations. Great opportunity to set an example in everything you do, which will build on-top of your endeavors outside the aircraft.

Super nice plane You guys really scored! What about all those exotic cars??? Oh to be in my 20's again . That was back in the 70's, so much more to experience today in the new Roaring 20's. HAVE, FUN, DON'T RUSH Your flight instruction AND ENJOY EVERY MOMENT. I myself have been flying for 32 years except for a nearly 10 year lay off from 2010 till 2019. Now I have a Comanche 250 and love being "Back in the Air Again" Just shy of 1500 total PIC and have owned 16 planes including 5 V Tails Bonanzas, 2 Vari - EZs, an Avid Flyer and even an ultra light. Began flying Hang Gliders in Reno back in the early 80's

Enjoyed your adventure! Purchasing an early generation Cirrus SR20 makes a lot of sense when you consider the alternative of purchasing a legacy airframe. Take the legacy aircraft, renew the paint, interior, glass, upgrade the avionics and you’ll end up with far more money in the airplane than you could ever sell it for AND it still will not have all the features that the Cirrus offers. I believe that you are way ahead of the game starting with the Cirrus! P.S I have been an aircraft owner for 23 years, having restored and upgraded one legacy aircraft along the way.

The safety belts on the two in the front were less than perfect. However in an accident would’ve done a wonderful job of rupturing the liver and probably spleen as well as crushing the sternum.

I did all the things to enter in the drawing. I used to own a 2002 Cirrus SR22 (your plane's big brother). If you look closely at my profile pic, you can see me in the cockpit of it. It was a great plane. I flew it all the way from Cincinnati to San Francisco and back. One of our stops out and back was Sedona, AZ. I know that airport well. Great views and not too far from the airport at the Grand Canyon. My plane had very similar instruments. That autopilot was my favorite thing about it... well that and the extra power that 320hp gives you. But the SR20 is a better plane for learning to fly in -- you made the right choice. I'll give you a bit of advice: I recommend that you don't just get your private license -- get instrument rated and stay current. You'll find that weather is the single biggest factor in planning trips of any length. Having the ability to fly IFR will help you mitigate that and give you way more options. Good luck with the flying lessons!

You guys have got a lot to learn. Not only getting getting your pilot's licenses, but aircraft ownership. You guys like to work on cars, but legally there is not a lot you can do by yourself in terms of maintenance and upgrades. You need to find a good A&P licensed mechanic. I should know, I've been a pilot and aircraft owner for over 30 years.....

Great score. I have built a Cozy and worked at FBO's for about 10 years. With composite planes, you want to keep the horizontal surfaces white. Any other color isn't good for the foam structure. You can do other colors (silver, yellow...). I can't remember the entire list. I think you would be safe varying that if you kept it in a hangar (HELL YEA, more car storage!). Now for the sides, go for broke! My biggest suggestion since it is a composite plane, hanger it. Once again, great find. I did it, and would love to come down from Durango!

If you guys learn nothing else, please learn not to talk to ATC like your buddy does. Proper phraseology is crucial and “ready to rock and roll” doesn’t cut it. There is a reason things are the way they are. Don’t be cool. Follow procedures to the letter, and always be by the book. For what it’s worth, we just lost a couple this week in the flying community where I live. They didn’t follow procedure and it cost them their lives. Fly safe, have a blast doing it. Never compromise on safety and procedures and you’ll have a lifetime of amazing memories. I owned a 2003 SR 20 just like yours, as well as some others :)
