I'm glad Matt got his visa application sorted. Back in August I was at the Immigration Office here in Istanbul to renew my residents permit when I got talking to a Turkish guy who was there to apply for his Russian wife. They had previously lived in Siberia where he had to apply for a new residents permit every six months and pay the fee in advance. If there was a document missing (and the officials seemed to make it up as they went along) the fee was forfeited and the application could only be re-submitted two weeks later after paying the fee again. He got sick of all the hassle, and they decided it would be easier for her to come and live in Turkey. At least the process is far less painful here. When are you popping over the border to Kazakhstan?
@MattandJulia3 жыл бұрын
Oh wow! Russian bureaucracy is second to none it seems 😁 To be honest it is similar in many ex USSR countries, guess it’s a hangover from the Soviet period 🤷🏼♂️ We are desperate to but it is closed to British citizens 😫 Julia has dual citizenship so she can go on her Russian passport but I can’t until at least December

Alls well that ends well guys. Harriet and I (Jim) will expect the same service. I wonder how they will treat both of us. We are US citizens. As always, thanks for the tip, I hope when you come to visit us, you will not have the same problems. Be well my friends. Harriet and Jim . Richmond, Va.

Glad you got that sorted out. Russian visa is a nightmare. Last time I was in Poland, I wanted to visit Kaliningrad for a few days, but was told I can only apply for a Russian visa in the U.S. This was only a couple years after I started traveling internationally, and I assumed I could just go to any Russian consulate in Poland and apply for a Russian visa. IDK why Russia does this, and IDK if other countries do this too.
@MattandJulia3 жыл бұрын
From what I know a few countries have this rule. I know it is the same for anyone wanting to apply for a British Visa too. So for example, Russians can only apply for a UK visa in Russia. Crazy rules in our day and age!

Left over butt hurt is the only thing holding back a bearing sea train/road tunnel opening up the North American / Siberia markets with ground transit. Now that would be revolutionary and eliminate Russia's desperate need for a warm water port.
@MattandJulia3 жыл бұрын
Not sure it’s just the tunnel under the Bering Straight but the thousands of miles of railroad through both Siberia and Alaska, the project would probably end up being totally cost ineffective for both parties 🤷🏼♂️ Russia’s search for a warm water port has more to do with its Navy as opposed to trade though 😊

So this one should be titled the frustrations of traveling. 😂😂. So as a citizen of the UK you have to get a visa to each country? And Julia is a citizen of Russia so she just has a visa for the UK? I have no idea how any of that works. I am born and raised in US and have not traveled abroad just to Canada. So whew my head hurts from watching you explain all of that. And that is probably the dirtiest place you have stayed. What a shame. Can’t wait to see your travels and hopefully everything from here on out will be smooth sailing. Be safe. ❤️❤️
@MattandJulia3 жыл бұрын
Haha, exactly! Only certain countries, so the British Passport is the 5th strongest passport in the world (according to something called Passport Index), and with that Brits can get into 142 countries visa free, but there are still 56 countries we need a visa for and Russia is one of those 🙂 Julia has both British and Russian citizenship so she can choose what passport to travel on based on the visa requirements. For example, to travel to an EU country it is easier for her to travel on the British passport as we don’t need a visa, whereas on a Russian passport you do. And conversely if we wanted to travel to Azerbaijan for example, it is better for her to fly on her Russian passport as Brits need a visa and Russians don’t. Basically with the two passports she is laughing 😀❤️❤️❤️

@@MattandJulia confusing. Matt, so why don’t you have both UK and Russian citizenship?
