Love all those trees!! I’m trying to convince my mom to buy a paper bark maple for her backyard 😂 She is wondering if the bark falls off the tree and leaves a mess in the yard? A tree I would recommend experimenting with would be the Alta Southern Magnolia. I currently live in Southwestern Ohio (Zone 5b/6a). I wasn’t sure if this tree would do well for me, but I found one and decided to give it a try. It will get to be about 20ft tall and 9ft wide (Zone 6). To my surprise, it has flourished in my garden. I’ve only had it for about 2 years now, but it’s grown so much. My biggest concern was the cold harsh winters we have. Shockingly to my surprise. It has survived both our winters. We even got down to -40 degrees in January. 😱 Yet this tree was unfazed by it. Great work! Super inspiring.

In my gardens, my favorite trees (so far) are the American Fringe tree (Chionanthus virginicus, approx 15 x 15) and my Joe Kozey umbrella pine (Sciadopitys verticillata ‘Joe Kozey’, approx 15- 20ft tall x 6-7 wide). Both are small trees that won't swamp my one story cottage (z5b/6a Massachusetts). I love your weeping redbud and the variegated beech and look forward to potentially adding them to my gardens. I have a very small property with no lawn. As I age, I'm converting my gardens from primarily perennial flowers (high maintenance) to primarily shrubs and small trees. It's exciting!

great tree's. I love planting evergreens and tree's which is what inspires me on your channel. I have so many favorites. Some you have like the paperbark Maple. Other's you need. I wont send you a list....lol....but for sure you need a Japanese stewartia. The bark itself is absolutely beautiful. almost a rainbow effect. As an added bonus, it flowers in July for me here in Massachusetts. It has small leaves so it does give dappled shade but, does not block out the sun from the ground. Full sun and stays on the small side. Thank you for sharing your garden.

I worry about the Birch tree, especially because of how tall it may get, and the wind channel effect it will get by the side of the house in strong winds. Birches are very prone to snapping off (branches and main stems) in strong winds. Many of my friends had suffered that. I have a 35-foot tall 14 year old Birch in my backyard. Tree limbs fall off in high winds all the time. However, I am in a city, so my birch is protected from four sides with buildings and apartments around it.

I was wanting white blooms but when we purchased during the fall sale at our local nursery, they only had pink. It was a great deal so we grabbed them. My husband was never overly excited with the Dogwood idea but let me go with it. This year we both could not love them more. They were loaded with blooms that lasted forever! Your collection of trees is just beautiful. You are lucky that your beech trees have not been impacted by the Beech Leaf Disease, which I know is in NY state. On Cape Cod, it has been devastating to see gorgeous old trees impacted. I planted a small one about five years ago and this Spring I discovered that it is infected. I am probably going to remove it as it is hard to invest space and time in my smallish garden on a tree that may not survive, but it is a favorite and so it is hard to pull the plug on it yet. I sincerely hope that your beauties are spared. On a brighter note, everything looks so healthy and happy in your beautiful garden. I love that you spoke to designing for fall foliage - so brilliant.

I would never have guessed you have THAT many deciduous trees in your yard. Must be due to thoughtful, perfect placement. I'm impressed by your knowledge and patience to care for your trees. Pruning and staking. It helps to have a partner to bounce ideas off of. When I bought my house 33 years ago there were about 11 mature trees. None of those originals remain. At least 15 years ago, I planted an eastern redbud switch in a shady corner of my back yard and forgot about it. Now it is so much larger, multi stems and grows curved into the yard that gives off an Asian vibe. I'm glad I never staked it. I picked up a 'Firespire' musclewood tree last month, yet to be planted. I researched so many varieties of small trees to replace a thornless Hawthorn that grew misshaped and leans (again, I ignored it) and looks like a ridiculous topiary. I so wanted to plant a 'Jane' magnolia (my sister's name), but at the time, it was considered "marginal" for our then z4b. When I saw this ironwood/beech/musclewood tree I snatched it up. Beautiful fall coler. It was discovered in neighboring Wisconsin so should do well here in Minneapolis. I planted a 'Prairie Fire' crabapple 24 years ago to memorialize my other sister and it looked beautiful...until it didn't. But it was too wide for the strip next to my driveway. Again, I didn't take care of it. Notice a theme? (Thanks to your informative videos I will take care of my new trees.) I hacked away at that tree one day and this year planted a 'Charles Joly' lilac that I know my sister Marcia would love. Much more manageable for that space. So fragrant. I got another lilac ('Virtual Violet') and planted it in my back/side yard. It's a cross between 'Charles Joly' and a couple others. I look forward to next spring when they will perfume my yard. I bought a variegated lilac several years ago, but it needed more sunlight so this year I transplanted it and it looks so much happier. My neighborhood is called "Lilac Way" so it's only fitting I grow several lilacs. I have a dwarf apple tree I thought was a goner after bunnies chewed off the bark all around way above the corregated collar I had "protecting" it. But heavy, heavy snowfall two years ago made that collar worthless. Ignoring the "dead" tree until I could afford a replacement I left on the collar for another year, I'd lopped off the top since that would never grow again. Darned if this year a leader emerged. I topped that off to encourage branching. I'm keeping my eye on it. It may be a viable tree one day. You've been inspiration for a island berm I'm dreaming of to shield my view of the setting sun as I stand at the kitchen sink. ☀️ 🔪 👁️

Hi you guys. I so appreciate and enjoy your videos. I garden in northeast PA. I have a problem with deer, too. I grow many daylilies, and inevitably the deer find them and eat the buds as they are about to bloom. I see you also suffer from deer damage. Your fence is lovely, but could you possibly extend it at the back of your property and reduce the likelihood of deer intrusion? In the fall I will install a fence, so I realize that it is an expensive fix, but it is so distressing to grow so many beautiful things only to have them eaten by marauding deer. Good luck, and keep growing for me.

Wonderful tour ! Love all the trees❤❤! FYI, bald cypress here in texas and Louisiana have a characteristic of getting humongous and at a point stop growing taller and starts, what we call, flat topping, and starts to grow more horizontal, very unique ', but gorgeous

This was wonderful information and beautiful views to see. You have two I've been trying to decide between, the tricolor beech and Carolina sweetheart redbud. Do you prefer one over the other?

Hello Eric and Christopher😊as usual I just love the care in choosing and placement of the plant material in your lovely garden. Today I toured the gardens of Biltmore in Asheville, NC with my daughter, she laughed a lot because I named every single specimen by name. You picked several not so common trees for your garden which is fantastic, looking forward to see them grow along with you🌞
