After our time in Ushguli our original plan was to head to Kazbegi which is another beautiful mountain region in Georgia. But after receiving a surprising invitation from the guy we rented our 4x4 from to attend a supra in his home village, we found ourselves changing our plans around completely.
While we went into this with NO IDEA what to expect, these next 2 days ended up being among our favorites of our entire time in Georgia!
We had a day to kill before the supra and stayed the night at the Sazano Wine Cellar & Hotel. This place was nearby Chiatura and the property was amazing -- we toured their grounds, did a wine tasting, attempted to make bread and cheese and enjoyed a delicious dinner.
The next day we had a little more time on our hands before the supra and made a quick detour to the nearby Katskhi Column and the old mining town of Chiatura.
And finally, the main event -- a Georgian supra. This is not just a regular dinner -- we had a feast like we have never seen before. There was so much delicious food... I’m talking about plates that were stacked on top of other plates. There was basically endless amounts of homemade wine and the supra went on until well after midnight while the tomada toasted a wide range of topics. After staying the night at their home, we made Georgian snickers before getting back on the road the next day.
To be honest we did not do a good job of capturing this experience (sorry about that ;)) but we wanted to be as present as possible with our hosts. It was truly an unforgettable experience. We had read about Georgian hospitality but we honestly never expected something like this. It was unlike anything we have ever experienced and we feel so fortunate to have been a part of such a special Georgian tradition.
THANK YOU SULKHAN FOR THIS UNFORGETTABLE EXPERIENCE!!
