We know it's a very hard situation right now in Sri Lanka and we want to do everything we can to support the locals 🇱🇰 We filmed this video a few weeks ago in February. We were unsure if we should post videos of our time in Sri Lanka, as we don't want to be ignorant of the fact that many people are struggling right now. But ultimately we decided to post our videos of Sri Lanka and hope that they can continue to show the beauty of this country during these tough times, especially because tourism is very important to the country.

Heard you guys are from Germany. There's another German vlogger in Sri Lanka, his name is Ken Abroad. Thank you for visiting the country. Much appreciated. Sri Lanka is heavily dependent on its tourism. Easter Sunday terrorist attack in 2019 led to a decline in tourist arrivals. COVID-19 lockdowns crippled whatever was left of tourism. The years 2019, 2020, and 2021 were a curse for the Sri Lankan tourism industry

Great video guys! but a tip for next time if you do visit again is that I feel there was a missed opportunity to visit more places as there were a lot more things to be done and some great restraints you could have tried. Colombo is just one of those places where you're better off asking someone who lives there about where and what to do :) Cheers

Truly respect both of you for respecting the local and keep your masks on in public. I have seen too many fellow expats who disregard any rules and just act like they are still in their own countries. Worse of all, demand local people to speak English with them. Props to you!
@ZoeandSimon2 жыл бұрын
We just try to follow the rules wherever we are, but yeah we also saw a lot of people that didn't care about anything. Of course we sometimes take the masks off for filming when there aren't many people around, but especially with bigger crowds we think it's important to be respectful.

I don’t want to hide the truth . We have some problems here. We are having some protests too but if you are comfortable with those you can visit.
@ZoeandSimon2 жыл бұрын
Hi! We don't have the most up to date information unfortunately, because we left Sri Lanka two weeks ago (we were in Colombo mid February). When we were there the protests hadn't started yet. We had power cuts in quite a few places, ranging from 2 hours a day (in Anuradhapura for example) to 7 hours a day on the south coast. We got informed about the power cuts in advance though, so we could plan around them and also there were quite a few restaurants that had their own generator. So we don't know what it's like right now, but the way things were a few weeks ago it was definitely manageable.

We spent four weeks in Sri Lanka and yes the situation is very hard at the moment. The shortages (some things in the supermarket are harder to get or much more expensive) were getting worse while we were there and we had more and more power cuts during the day (in some places up to 7 hours per day) We really hope that it's not going to get even worse over the next few months, but we'll have to see. We're hoping for the best.

@@guillaumetau8761 We don't have the most current information, as we left two weeks ago. But when we were there, there were quite a lot of restaurants that had working generators. We were also informed of the power cuts before they happened, so we tried planning around them. Of course if the fuel shortage becomes worse, then at some point gemerators won't work, but it's hard to say if that will happen. Overall as a tourist you notice the negative effects much less of course than locals and it should be ok. And it's probably a good thing to go and support the country by visiting as a tourist, too.

@@guillaumetau8761 dont avoid Colombo. As a tourist you will be fine as long as you stay at the better hotels who have generators. So far Petrol has not been too much of an issue compared to Diesle so make sure the vehicle you hire is petrol to avoid any problem.

An as expat, I don’t see any issue with China helping Sri Lanka modernize and building infrastructure. Most western countries which have colonized places around the world has done similar things, where are their critics? Isn’t it double standard?
@ZoeandSimon2 жыл бұрын
Yes, this is definitely not a unique thing and it's always happened in the world economy. We can't really comment on the effects of this kind of project, as we feel we're lacking the necessary background information. But we hope it helps Sri Lanka's economy in the long term.
@localasian2 жыл бұрын
Since 2010, there is a sharp rise in Sri Lanka’s external debt. All these external debts include money borrowed from countries like China, Japan, India, and World Bank and Asian Development Bank in the name of infrastructure projects. Third world countries should refrain from acquiring huge loan for unproductive sector and get caught into the debt trap that can challenge the economy.
