We live in Nova Scotia and wanted to change to solar. Our monthly cost for electricity is around 170 dollars on average. The estimate to change to solar was 35,000 minus the 3,000 provincial rebate. With the 10 year interest free loan, our monthly bill would be around 300 dollars. This estimate was from the solar company. There were some additional costs that pushed the monthly bill to 300. Also, we need to upgrade our electrical service to 200 amp service. Now, if I estimate that the cost of electricity will go up by 5 percent per year over the next 10 years, it will take us around 16 years to break even if there are no issues with the system that are not covered under warranty or with the inverter that only has a 10 year warranty. This cost of going green is still too high.

NS resident here. There are a lot of houses and to keep costs manageable they don't always check the meters, and may just bill you for estimated usage based on your last bills. That is likely what happened to the house that burned down. There is a way to contact customer service and force them to send someone out to check the meter to ensure an accurate bill. They are now also putting in smart meters which will eliminate the need for someone to actually come to your house to check it, therefore giving a more accurate bill.

I like your optimism and hope things will be more accurate ;)

Wrong. Mist if not all meters are smart meters, meaning bills are all actual usage. No meter, no bill. NS power knows when a meter isn't recording.

We live in Ontario. Looking at Nova Scotia too. I'm jealous.

I can’t recommend this place enough. Even when weighing up the pros and cons, life in NS has been far better than ON for us.

J Just came back from Nova Scotia; looking at houses. Nicer people, no urban sprawl, less traffic, less pollution than Ontario....what's not to like. People who have moved there say best decision they've made. We'll be there within the next 12 months. Glad to see your enjoying it there too. Cheers.

I moved here 3 years ago. My monthly utilities went down about $100. I don't pay for water now that I'm on a well. I was paying $90/month for municipal water. Nat gas is gone but offset by electricity. My electricity was $100/month and now $200 or so depending on season. In NS, we pay 2nd highest electricity price in the country. Quebec is the cheapest. NSPower is MANDATED to have a 8% profit, so we pay more when they have a bad year. Every $100 we pay, $8 goes to shareholders. We the customers pay for the lean years while shareholders reap 8% .

There is a water bill which comes every 3 month if you are hooked to municipal waters. I live in halifax our water bill is avg $250 every 3 months. Property tax is higher too in HRM.

Ahh ok! We aren’t connected to municipal water so electricity is our only utility. But thank you for sharing and for welcoming us to the province!

I have been using a Nova Scotia power cellular telephone for three years for free🎉🎉🎉

Why was it so high for the first 7 days though?
@LifeinNovaScotia2 жыл бұрын
I think it was the case that the house was cold and so we were running the heat during the day for a few days and there was also a $30 admin charge on that bill.

Nova Scotia power has so many disgruntled employees their business is being sabotaged every minute of the day!!! I love it but I do feel sorry for the customers.

@@LifeinNovaScotia power company who bills you.. /scam with these new meters, thats why.. i seen people not even hooked up and empty meter slots get power bills.. as a retired builder. you be surprised of industry scams.. for example they just tried to screw people who generate their own power and sell it back to NS power few months ago.. bottom line is $$$$$ .. we import coal from dictator countries and shut ours mines down.. i care about people not $$$$ , can they say same

Unfortunately you’re not the first to tell me about these issues with NS Power. One of the surprises I had when moving to Canada from the UK, was that there was only one power company to choose from!? Competition is healthy and helps avoid monopolies, that is until the companies get together and agree their rates.
